Anyone else getting a bit down because it's coming close to Valentine's day? I know it's just like a normal day but this year weirdly enough I get a bit fed up of having noone to bring me flowers or even sex all day. Haha |

It can be a hard time for people in relationships too! Competitive couples going OTT for one day, making others feel insignificant.
Couples struggling with their relationship who feel the lack of romance or affection.
It's a shit Hallmark day all round!! |

Maybe there needs to be a day celebrating the joys of singledom.

Nothing planned at all for Valentine's day for me but I am going to the Valentine's Party at VA on Saturday and seeing my fwb for a couple days after Valentine's Day so it could be worse |

I just have a problem with crap like valentines day really..nothing to do with being single, I just hate commercialism! And sheeple... plus I would rather get nothing on that day from a person that shows me he loves me all the time than something from someone that only shows me once a year |

It never bothers me. Even though I seem to be permanently single. I find it all a bit blah.
I prefer flowers given to me spontaneously. And not red ones.
But if Valentine's Day warms your heart then that's lovely. |

I never really understood the emphasis on Valentine's Day anyway. I mean, its nice and all, but that's all it really is - nice. We actively avoid things on that day as the prices are always jacked up. |

It's half term so I'll be working my arse off. However I plan to be going out with my single best friend and her daughter for a meal on Valentines Day as we've been best friends for 17 years, and our friendship has truly out lasted any romantic relationship either of us have ever had. |

I can't believe people let a commercialised day get to them. I don't think I've ever done anything out of the ordinary for Valentine's day. And I've been in a relationship for 24 years! |

Well I beat you because I've had three.
Mr N and I booked a Valentine's dinner at a restaurant we'd just eaten in. The following day we had upset stomachs so cancelled so you win on dinners. |

I'm not bothered about Valentines Day as I'll be working that day with it being half term but on the good side, I'm off to Cupids the day before so I'll consider that a Valentine Day treat for myself |

I quite like Valentine's day. It's never been a big romantic thing for me, and I really love the fact there are always nibbly food and lingerie bargains to be picked up the day after as a result of enforced romanticism in every retail outlet going. Plus, I get free reign to write bad poetry for a day if I feel so inclined. What's not to like? |

A day hijacked by marketing consultants to flog cards flowers food and any old tat while trying to make those who do or don't buy feel all levels of guilt about other people's expectations
If we really care about another then every day should be Valentine's Day...

I've never bought the valentine's day thing, just a chance for retailers to line their pockets even more thickly since the price of everything rockets
Also, if a partner relies on 14th Feb to show you they "love you" they clearly don't all that much actually do they?? |

Fact of life at some point in the year some people will "begrudge" what others have.
If you don't have family it's Christmas and Easter. If you don't have friends it's New Year. If you're childless it's Mother's/Father's day, if single Valentine's day.
There will always be situations others are experiencing you wish you could too: human nature.
My other half will buy me flowers, chocolate on the 7th or thereabouts as it's cheaper. He'll take me to dinner this week because of the price difference.
Being Dutch he'll probably want me to go Dutch too!
Being partnered up not always what it's cracked up to be! |

Valentines was for young suitors to show their interest and affection in a lady and it was all done anonymously which is far more romantic and traditional. Now it’s all who can buy the biggest card and pay extortionate amounts for a chocolates, flowers and jewellery |

Top tip for Valentine’s Day for couples:
Thinking of going for a nice romantic meal or buying a nice bunch of flowers for your loved one?
Mutually agree to do that THE FOLLOWING WEEK so that you can have exactly the same meal / flowers for half the price. Then use the money you’ve saved for other things!
Valentines Day is just a huge commercial rip off - don’t get suckered in to it. Real partners will know you love them exactly the same |

I remember my ex husband getting very upset when I left him at home and spent our first valentines as a married couple watching Fulham vs Notts County in the FA cup 5th round. Good thing it didn’t go to a replay as that was scheduled to take place on our first wedding anniversary
He was one for huge, ridiculous overblown gestures. Whereas I prefer the sweet little things that show how much you care every day. |

"Its probably been done before.... But why not to a singles Valentine match thread? Send cards, do the poetry thing... Even meet up for dinner on the day if that appeals? Just a thought... "
There used to be a vanetines thread every year, someone would be the co-ordinaries and all messages where sent to them first, then on Valentine’s Day all the messages would be displayed on the thread either anonymously or named if people were partners etc |

Ah right... So basically just another polarity thread where the same few people get smoke blown up their arses?
I was thinking something a little less 'look at me' and more in keeping with the true sentiment of the day.... A thread where singles say they're in.... and if people want to match up they can mail privately and take it from there.... No public pronouncements... Just 2 people making the most of what might otherwise be a lonely day without the need to shove it down everyone else's throat |

You could also go to cinema the following day or the day before, the following month etc.
Valentine day and the notion of it is pointless. Any woman speaking from my point of view as a guy that wants me to do something special for a specific day is out of her mind.
where is the surprise element what happen if I suddenly want to do something special in march do I wait until the following year Feb 14. |
