The Met Office is collecting regional terms for the weather. Radio 4 PM show has had people using their regional terms for the weather today.
Let's collect the regional terms here and we can get the Met to use this as a data source.

Erm, possibly. It doesn't have the same feel as say "dreich" but if it works for you.

I remember taking an accent test once and finding out that some people in the American south, when there is a sunshower, instead say "the devil is beating his wife".

"i heard some this morning... i didn't realise "pelting" and "bucketing" were regional....
i thought the only one i really use is when its "blowing a hoolie" "
Perhaps the regional origin has become obscured because there is so much movement and communication now?

"Scottish word... dreich (pronounced dreek) A combination of dull, overcast, drizzly, cold, misty and miserable weather."
It's one I use but people look at me quizzically and ask if I'm speaking German.

Wash your mouth out... it’s not pronounced dreek... that would sound like leek.
It’s like saying you pronounce loch like lock. |

You’ll notice I didn’t attempt it!
Och is about the closest I got to describing it but I guess if anyone is that interested in our Scottish chatter they’ll google. |

It is often stated that the phrase originated from the use of a brass tray, called a "monkey", to hold cannonballs on warships in the 16th to 18th centuries. Supposedly, in very cold temperatures the "monkey" would contract, causing the balls to fall off

"The masquerade ball a few years ago at Jaydee, I remember it was absolutely stotting off the ground
I was there and I have no idea.
"
I know you were there!
Remember, the rain was that heavy it was literally 'bouncing' off the carpark
