Was hoping to start a training thread for folks that work out in gyms

any tips on supplements etc

I have started taking some amino acids to increase nitric oxide pump and boy do they work, feels like your biceps are about to explode with the pump

.

L-Citrulline DL-Malate 2-1, 1 heaping teaspoon

Beta Alanine, 1/2 heaping teaspoon

L-Norvaline, 1/2 heaping teaspoon

these can be purchased at most food supplement shops and the benefit when training hard is exceptional, giving more energy, more surge of power and huge muscle pump

Always do one more!! PhD supplement is good. Affordable too.

I noticed that a small meal of rice and chicken an hour, hour and a half before working out makes a huge difference if your lifting heavy.

And creatine.

I often wonder when reading about this subject, if it's the supplement companies taking folk for a ride to empty wallets. Are they largely just placebo effect products?

A very good friend of mine is a competing bodybuilder and uses zero supplementing in his diet, and looks incredible. He eats more food than an army but gets all his nutrition from his food some. This is only one story but if you browse around, I'm sure there are many more similar.

If it says it on ingredients then that's what's in there lol. Think they would get away with it? Costs less than buying loads of food.

yes he may be one of the lucky ones with High testosterone & free testosterone

It is often worth getting your bloods done to find out how much testosterone you produce

No some people Dont use supplements and get everything from food. But like she said you got to eat loads and then burn it off. Its more expensive than supplements and more time consuming. You got to be in the gym about 2 to 3 hours a day 4 to 5 times a week to burn it off. Need to be dedicated.

The Myprotein stuff is a good source for supplements

I’m on a plan written by a body builder. I take creatine and bcaa before hitting gym/whilst training.

Protein shake post work out.

Another shake at some point during the day

Then Meals largely consisting of chicken, rice and veg/salad

Also do egg on toast for breakfast in training days and over night oats mixed with protein whey and almond milk on non-training days.

Other supplements include vit c, vit d, Cod liver oil and omega 3 fish oils.

He'll be referring to Testosterone gel/patch.

Generally supplements are, in the main pointless. Unless you're deficient in something.

The pump you get from the likes of beta alanine is simply blood in the muscles. Does it help? Potentially as part of increased blood flow there's a chance of increased nutrient availability to the muscle. But, only if the nutrients are there and only if you've done enough work to warrant the need for them.

Things like whet protein are just food. Not getting enough protein/food to grow? Then it's easy and cheep to add but there's precisely no benefit over other forms of food. This whole "metabolic window" following training is largely rubbish and a way for supplement companies to help empty your wallet.

Agree. Unless you're trying to be a competitive body builder where you need every little advantage, eating a decent amount of protein is all you need to do.

There's plenty of good research out there - examine (dotcom) is a good place to start.

As far as I'm aware Creatine monohydrate does aid recovery and is worth taking. I think there's a weight of research which suggests Beta alanine may aid strength, but most of the others seem not to do anything.

Good sleep is far more important than any supplement will ever be, and that's free!
