For me, recently it's American Gods by Neil Gaiman and The Shadow Of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I've read and finished both but they lost me slightly. |

How To Win Friends and Influence People is overrated, basically just states the obvious.
For an "all time classic", I didnt think Great Gatsby was that good either. |

Not really an author or book (sorry!) but I felt the same watching Citizen Kane.
Everyone says it’s one of the greatest films of all time, I found it tedious! Couldn’t watch to the end. |

I tried twice to get into shadow of the wind but it just wasn’t happening for me. |

Recently purchased "Devil's Day" by Andrew Hurley on the recommendation of a lady at Waterstones.
Awful read - in fact I`ve given up at page 60. One of the most annoying aspects is that a character's father is referred to as "dadda" all the way through. The character is an adult himself and with dadda being "baby language" it's absolutely infuriating to read "dadda" about 6 or 7 times a page!!
It is also very slow - taking an eternity to describe something as mundane as a car journey from a train station to a farm a couple of miles away - truly awful. |

I know I ought to but I have never finished a Dickens. There's also a lot of modern award winning fiction writers I never enjoyed reading and now just don't bother trying because I simply don't like any of the characters. They're not people I want to spend time with. |

I absolutely LOVED American Gods! It was my first Gaiman novel though, I've read Stardust and Neverwhere since and they're completely different, so I can see how you might not get on with it if you're already a N.G. fan.
I read a few Chandler books and fell in love with the Noir/hard boiled gumshoe vibe, and subsequently someone recommended Ellroy. I really like the movie LA Confidential, and I quite liked The Black Dahlia, so I bought those two to read. Absolutely dreadful author, really hard going and barely compelling at all. |
