'Housewives'- men or women that stay home and won't work when their children are at school. (Definition here does not mean parents with children below school age.)
Housewife- "I cook meals from scratch and do cleaning while the kids are at school and also go for coffees with other housewives."
Working parent- "I do all that and have a job too."
What do you think? |

Im the housewife in this home I Spose
My uvver half does the shift work , I earn from home .
I do the cleaning, washing up, laundry ,sometimes daily. I also order the online shopping ( and help put away sometimes). I cook from scrAtch and from freezer or takeaway.
I spend lots of time in the bath but don't waste time , I read a book or use the Internet whilst in there . Also shaving my arse an legs takes time and if it's testicle Tuesday they're quite tricky and can add half an hour to the bath.
I am mad busy today as have posted a thread and responded to a few and still need to get ready to go to salon to get my eyelashes done.
An hour or so before anyone gets home I am very busy doing the dishes and mopping floor so I can complain if it's dirtied .
So no definitely not lazy !

I'm not sure lazy is the right word. Priviliged maybe? To be in a position where they don't HAVE to work is definitely different to most people in today's society.
On the flip side there is also other circumstances to consider. Finding a job that fits around school hours is hard, childcare isn't cheap so it may be that they WANT to work it just isn't feasable. |

I used to work part time while hubby works shifts. Was a bit of a pain with the kids at school so we stopped it. Now I make sure the house is clean tidy and meals are prepped ready. Kids sorted and no stress or rushing about. Also it’s gives me time to be “free” during the day |

Minge Monday ? Then always available to help out on testicle Tuesday - crossover days can result in plug blockages , then you have to go all the way downstairs bring up the drain cleaner . Work smart do yours Monday blame any blockages on testicle Tuesday |

My opinion is that working for pay is a grossly over rated pastime and that if for any reason you can afford not to then you should grasp thatthey opportunity. Life has so much more to offer than the daily grind. |

I was going to say that 6 days a week you're lazy, but having no kids and testicle Tuesday saved you from that honour. |

I don’t think they are lazy, they have a job in hand. Managing the House is a full time job. Believe it or not. |

I know a couple who are lazy. One has her mother in law do the school run and her housework. No idea what she does all day.
Most married/living together women have to work now to cover bills and extras for the children.

No, I have far more respect for a housewife who raises kids and takes care of the home than a woman who thinks she's changing the world and breaking the glass ceiling because she gets paid 20k to make Power Point presentations and has three cats to feed.
I know which of the two women's lives has more purpose too. |

But the OPs point is that people that work full time also have to manage the house as well as work! The housework doesn’t disappear because you work!
C’mon I bet lots of housewives/househusbands find the time to watch Jeremy Kyle and Loose Women in between the daily chores! |

Well done to them. The point is, that of the two, being a housewife is a more noble and fulfilling role for a woman to take on than being a childless, single "career woman".

When my sister didn’t work she had a cleaner.
She would get stressed about stupid things like having the curtains open the night before because she didn’t have time to do it in the morning.
It took 2 seconds to do it.
Often those who don’t work, make out they are busier than they really are. |

I chose not to work when I had my children up until each of them went to Nursery and I then found part time work to fit in. Financially it was a challenge at times but I didn’t want to miss a minute with them so I managed.
I wasn’t lazy but I wasn’t ‘mad busy’. I made sure every chore was done whilst they were at Nursery, 3 hours a day at that point, so that when they were home I could spend all my time with them. Yes, on occasion I did go for a coffee but I never sat watching TV.
I don’t regret they way I did it. I have always been around to take my children and collect them from school. I chose jobs around them. It worked perfectly and I loved it. I appreciate it’s not for everyone for many reasons but I wouldn’t change a thing. I feel lucky to have spent so much time with them. |

Growing up both my mum and dad worked full time. Absolutely loved their jobs, and I missed seeing them every day. When we have children, I hope I’m in a lucky enough situation to be able to not work (hubby wants this too). I doubt that will be the case, but it would be lovely. We had rushed dinners growing up - only on a Sunday would be have something proper. Hardly ever had proper family days out as when it came to the weekend, my parents were exhausted from work. Sorry, I’ve rambled.... |

I'm probably in the lazy category but my partner doesn't expect to come home a show home. It's usually tidy ish, and the dog's been walked. I'm a freelance writer and have a separate zero hours contract so work about 30 hours a month to keep myself sane. Personally I don't have a lot of spare cash but he feeds and clothes us etc because he can and wants to. I have offered to apply for different jobs so we have more money but neither of us see the point in me taking up employment that could be used by someone who desperately needs it. I've been everything in my short lifetime. From teen mum on benefits to a journo for a big Corp. |

Im a housewife/ mum whatever mame people decide . We chose for it to be this way from before the kids were born . We don't have any family who can help with childcare so for 3 children I would probably pay out more than i actually earnt in the school holidays . I would love a job that worked around them ( applied for a few recently) but very few and far between . I love fetching my children up myself and have never missed any milestones which is great . I love been there for when they get in from school but ....and a big but I do miss the social aspect of working and meeting people , there is only so many chores you can do and so many cups of tea with other mums you can take lol. I long for being able to go back to work . Some people love the idea of not working and being a stay at home mum , but in reality it can be very isolating and lonely too .
Just my opinion and point of view of course . Xx |

Yeah. We gave up working for money as soon as we could. We're not wealthy and some people would definitely say we're lazy because we seem to live a slower pace of life than they do but I only think being lazy is a bad thing if it impacts on others in a bad way. We have loads of stuff to do, all the things we wished we had time for when we worked for pay. |

When I compare my friends who don't work to those who do. The ones who work have cleaner houses and are a lot more organised and have more home cooked meals. The ones that don't work I really don't know what they do with half their time. I think you can get into a mindset of I have all the time in the world but it doesn't get done half the time x |

Good point about the social side. I can imagine the people at home during the day would be more likely to talk about kids, whereas at work there would be different conversations.
I'd think your kids will remember and appreciate you being there for them. |

It depends on the person. I've known housewives that are lazy, and I've known people who have full time jobs that are lazy. Just as I've known both types that are truly hard working.
My mother worked full time in the school me and my brother attended growing up. Then she would bring us home and take care of us. Hard working. But then we got older and she quit and did nothing all day. Lazy.
My sister works full time, and has a kid. She is always too tired to do anything with him. Always. She gets home at 10pm. She uses the weekends to rest from working all week. My parents used to say how worried about him they were because of the experiences he was missing out on.
At the same time, I've known women who work and really do everything. They get a pay check, they take care of their kids, and they are good at both. But they are also tired. A bit unhappy. Just as I've known full time housewives who do everything with their kids, who give them new experiences and keep the house perfectly in order. But they are often not really happy either. Sometimes there are fights about money and their personal relationship with their spouse suffers, etc.
I would say that having a job does not make a woman lazy or not. Neither does having/not having kids. Its how well a person does their job or takes care of their kids that determines their laziness. Not to mention that sometimes it makes financial sense to stay at home, just as it can make financial sense for both partners to work. Context. |

Couldn't agree with this more! Exactly what I did with mine although we did swap at one point and he stayed at home.
Children and family are important. Having a big house and car wasn't that important to me. That's not what brings me happiness.
Part time work was the route I went down and I'll never regret it

"It depends on the person.
Context. "
I agree. |

"Im a housewife/ mum whatever mame people decide .
Xx
Good point about the social side. I can imagine the people at home during the day would be more likely to talk about kids, whereas at work there would be different conversations.
I'd think your kids will remember and appreciate you being there for them. "
I really hope they do , we arnt well off by any means we get by and live pretty comfortable on one wage so while we can and until they are old enough to be at home alone it's possibly the way it will stay unless one of these jobs come off ( hopefully) .
It is boring and yes most of the conversations with other parents are about thier wonderful little darlings lol . If only they all knew about fab ....the conversations might be a little more interesting |

Most married/living together women have to work now to cover bills and extras for the children.
She sounds lazy. I know some women that come home from work and sit on the sofa all night. They are lazy.
I can't decide if the OP is baiting or being sincere...
I'm looking for discussion. Why is that baiting? Are people not allowed to say what they think in case someone gets upset? "
Perhaps I should have worded that as provoking instead then |

When I was a housewife I used to clean for approximately 12 hours a day. I definitely wasn’t lazy, I’m lazier in work. But I was bored and depressed and felt useless because I didn’t contribute financially so I got a shit job as a receptionist while doing a masters degree and still doing all the housework. Now I’m just bored in work instead need to do half and half I think |

"Im the housewife in this home I Spose
It takes half an hour to shave your testicles? How big are they? "
It's more the back arch to keep them out the water whilst shaving that's hard to keep holding that position at my age , also made more difficult whilst pulling tight to smooth out the wrinkles. The back arch is very important otherwise im wasting shaving gel if I have to keep reapplying - us housewives are all about budgeting household costs dontcha know . |

Bloody hell!!! What's left to clean after cleaning for 12 hours??!! Do you live in a mansion??
I was obsessive, when I’d finish I’d start again it was a nightmare "
All the things that get done about 3 times a year now were done daily, washing all the walls, taking down curtains, beaching all the woodwork, taking down light fittings, cleaning windows inside and out, scrubbing oven etc you’ll be surprised how much there is to clean if that’s all you do!! Now a quick tidy, hoover and polish and I’m done |

"No, I have far more respect for a housewife who raises kids and takes care of the home than a woman who thinks she's changing the world and breaking the glass ceiling because she gets paid 20k to make Power Point presentations and has three cats to feed.
I know which of the two women's lives has more purpose too.
I was going to say the same. I was married but we didn’t want kids, it’s just not a desire of mine. I love my life as a career woman, I don’t feel like it’s empty in any way. That comment is something like my chauvinistic Dad would say and he is not someone I respect!!
What about those (and men too!) that manage both?
Well done to them. The point is, that of the two, being a housewife is a more noble and fulfilling role for a woman to take on than being a childless, single "career woman".
You have a very old fashioned view of women and their role in life don’t you? "

What if you’re a power hungry professional
With three kids five cats two dogs three rabbits and an immaculate house but stressed to fuxk and you’ve already hit above the glass ceiling ?
Oh and for me
At the minute being a houseperson cause I’m not a wife is a fecking nightmare it’s so stressful I’d rather be back at work but can’t

My work friend mentioned this subject quite recently.
Her girls have left school now so she has started work again after 17yrs of being a stay at home parent.
She actually admited it was easy being a house wife. She said you do a chore and ait down in your own time. You do another chore and relax again.Working you don't get those breaks between tasks you just have to move on to the next task without breaks every 20 min.
So I would say yes that most housewives so have it easy and they say it's hard work as a excuse to get away with it x |

I was an at home mum. And I stayed home for a while after my youngest went to school.
I certainly wasn't lazy.
I'd do the school run. Come home and do the house work. Make hubbies lunch as he always popped home. Walked out to fetch the kids. Do their homework with them. Cool the dinner. Clean up after dinner. Bath the kids and put them to bed. Do the ironing. And finally go to bed exhausted. And was often up in the night with poorly kids.
Now I work full time and I'm a single mum. No school run and they bath and bed themselves. But my home suffers. Meals aren't from scratch.
I would never have said being home was lazy. |

"'Housewives'- men or women that stay home and won't work when their children are at school. (Definition here does not mean parents with children below school age.)
Housewife- "I cook meals from scratch and do cleaning while the kids are at school and also go for coffees with other housewives."
Working parent- "I do all that and have a job too."
What do you think?"
Haven't read the full thread but for me this is very simple - if more people stayed at home and provided a nice environment for the kids i.e. there when they get home from school - taking them in the morning - then the world would be a much nicer place. The "greed" of 2 working parents (that's how it all started) has led to many aspects of the deterioration of society. So, "housewives" are great - of either sex - that's my opinion (man) |

"I chose not to work when I had my children up until each of them went to Nursery and I then found part time work to fit in.

If you read my post properly you will see I put a caveat in brackets - "that's how it all started" - I`m not saying it's necessarily the case now BUT a lot still do it out of greed - nice cars, "better" house etc. - we live in a greedy capitalist world - fact.
There is a direct correlation between the generation of "2 working parents" and an increase in juvenille delinquency - fact.
The houseperson is much undervalued and it will go full circle and be the norm again one day - once society stops yearning for more and more material things. |

Hmm well I’m currently caring for a family member part time and I don’t have time to be lazy and my charge goes to hospital a few afternoons a week. (Same as school age children go to school) But there is a constant stream of mess to clean up and laundry to do as well as a selection of foods to make depending on what he can face.
My weekends I spend with mr so when I get back it’s chaos and catch up all the time. |

Yeah. We gave up working for money as soon as we could. I think people get too caught up in the grind. Frantically working to buy stuff they don't need. I'm probably as guilty of that as anyone, but slowly trying to lose these bad habits. Give me time over money any day of the week! |

Some partnerships like one of them to be a househusband or housewife so the house is always organised etc. I have a friend who’s now deceased husband did not want her to go back to work once they had a child even when that child went to school. He enjoyed knowing she didn’t need to work. |

Totally agree. If I didn't have bills to pay, I wouldn't work at all. I can think of a thousand things I'd rather be doing, but needs must.
I think people get too caught up in the grind. Frantically working to buy stuff they don't need. I'm probably as guilty of that as anyone, but slowly trying to lose these bad habits. Give me time over money any day of the week!
Yep. We don't have "stuff" but we have time."
Time is more valuable to me than 'stuff'. |

I wonder if I should do a thread asking if women should be allowed to work."
How about should Women be allowed to start threads? |

I suppose some will be lazy and some won't. Some will be at home because they can't be bothered to get a job, others will be staying home because if they worked their wages will just go on childcare.
I personally find it boring being at home, they can use bullshit excuses like they clean/cook, that doesn't take up 6 hours of the day. They may as well just be honest as to why they don't work and say yeah I spend a lot of the time sitting so sweet f all because I can. |

IMHO
There should be no housewives because all work should be paid. Nobody else does anything for free. Why should people do unpaid work at home. Just a way of paying workers less. Doesn't even the word "house" "wife" reek of 100 years ago? |

Why are most people assuming that of you don't do paid work you stay at home and get bored? Or at least stay at home.
It's absolutely possible to not go to a workplace but still go outside the home and lead an active and fulfilling life.
An ex colleague asked me what I do all day, I was aghast that she hadn't considered there was more to life than turning up for work every day. |

So any man or woman that does work around the house should be paid for it? So someone going out to work all day then coming home and doing their housework, what they deem necessary, should be paid? Who would pay them? It's their house, they create the mess and every household is different, so how would it be categorised as my level of tidiness is different to my neighbours. |

"I'm not sure lazy is the right word.
This is my situation AND I HATE IT!
Applying for voluntary work so I dint go stir crazy, somethings better than nothing I suppose being a single mum with 2 kids wasn't my plan so op if you want to look after my kids so I can afford to work? |
