real furr :(

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So I'm due to recover a box for a lady friend at weekend. It's a large ex uni gym box with padded leather top. The leather is all split and cracked.

Also she's vegan...so she requested a fake furr cover.. thought it great idea and good recycling for her eco warrior bit...if I bought a 2nd hand fake furr jacket from a charity shop...use the whole back and concealed stitching for any joins.

So I'm at charity shops..... looking... asking.. find a jacket... woman's... massive... looked real. Very high quality... best fake furr ever seen.

Spoke to two old biddies who both assured me they knew furr and this was fake hence the price and it's about the best fake furr youll find...it's very old they said.

Still looked real to me..felt real..but they said was wrong.

So I try it on at home it fits...weird it's so heavy now it's on.. looking at cut and fact it fitted me...made me think it's a man's winter coat...maybe Russian or Canadian...no lables or anything to say lables had been there.

Out comes the knife...liner cuts easy..rip it out..turn jacket and felt a little sick.

It's real. The back is of most concern...it's so big, some of the panels at sides round collar... perhaps mink...so sad truly hate this.

Mate won't have it don't blame her. Charity shop said they thought was fake and sorry about that but I've damaged it so they can't very well take it back.

Sending it to an artist mate. He said will use it in a work...so least it will be recycled in a nice way.

Not fond of real furr. What do others think?

Real fur is beautiful ... on the animal who it belongs to.

Artificial furs are such good quality these days that there is no need for real fur.

You’ve done the right thing there OP, well done x

It depends. I believe if an animal is being used for meat the whole animal should be used so I have no objection to rabbit fur being used in those circumstances.

Thanks for your input.

Still feel bad that I actually bought that. Really makes me sad to think how large the back panel was and I don't want to think about what animal no longer walks this earth.

The quality begged questions that it's not from a farmed animals. I'm actually quite upset about it, as stupid as that sounds.

My mate will do something good with it I know that but it just made me sad thinking this is like lots of dead animals

Yes that's what a owner of a leather belt makers told me. She said all their leather comes from the meat industry as a by product. To me given the price of leather...and the cheaper meat.. surely is other way round.

Not a fan of fur myself...though saying that....I don't agree with the manufacturing of fur items....I'd be lying if I said I hadn't owned a vintage fur piece

I wouldn't buy fur now.

A lot of people don't have a problem with antique fur so sell it on.

High demand for period / era dressing.

Hate clothes made from real fur. Go watch a video of an animal being skinned alive, or analy electrocuted.

If it doesn't leave you cold and disgusted then you are cunt of a human. No I don't wear leather or silk either.

If it's a byproduct I'm all for using the whole animal. If it must die for us then let's not waste any of it if we can.

I also have no problems with using vintage fur, let's not waste it.

If the animal was killed just for its fur, that I don't agree with, there's no need for that when there are man-made alternatives.

But that's the problem, the vast majority isn't a byproduct.

How many people actually eat fox, mink, chinchilla?

Fake fur had also been found to be real, they just use cats and dogs instead and label it fake.

Leather, again not always a by product. There's plenty of animals killed just for their skin, the rest goes to waste.

Couldn't give a shit. All part of the food chain.

You think a polar bear/lion/mink/etc al care about your well-being?

Polar Bears (who everybody thinks are so "cute") are actually known to attack even when not even hungry, they just love violence.

In the stone-age, people like you with your "morals" would have frozen to death. Natural selection .

I'm not a vegetarian so have no problems with responsibly sourced leather and fur. I'd be hypocritical if I did.

Doubtful. He still thinks it's 1920 when women were at their best seen and not heard, pandering to the man of the house while being quiet and meek.

But natural selection is handy in this case, because I fail to see how any woman would ever touch someone like him with someone else's fanny, so no chance of him breeding hopefully.

This is very true. I tend to think of fur coats in terms of mink, Fox etc ... but if it’s a by-product, as with leather & suede then I have no problem with that

I don’t agree with killing an animal just for its fur any more than for its horn or its ivory.

I know, that's why I said I agree with its use IF it's a byproduct. If it isn't then I think it's a complete waste of a life. We have absolutely no need to kill animals just for their skin.

Your money went to charity. You have been responsible in questioning it prior to purchase but were given the wrong information and the art idea is the best thing you could have done.

Yes I thought that also.

Sounds like he could be part of the fox hunting brigade.

I didn't think people thought like this anymore...lion and bear....it's very sad...if they don't have enough of a hard time someone wishes to promote killing them.

It's a sad world we live in.

Thanks to those that had input and let me understand a little better, that I've done the right thing.

Best wishes people

Funny you should say that, I've never hunted a Fox, but I've shot a deer and it was my first time so I accidentally got it in the leg so it suffered for a few minutes before the expert ended it.

Why would I get banned for shooting a deer? Thousands of people do it. And I'm assuming wanting to meet me is a threat of violence, so if anything, you would be banned, regardless of the fact you're twice my age and would almost certainly lose the imaginary fight you've conjured up.

I've not threatened you and nor would I do so. I just think you are not very worldly wise...well your still young...no i thought I'd like to hear you tell me first hand how this fear suffered is all

I've conjured up nothing. Age has little to do with anything. As you grow up a little you maybe realise this, but things I've read you've wrote on fab, maybe not.

Best wishes to you
