Due to the nature of my job Ive spent all day patching people up and they have all blamed the fact that its friday the 13th for their mishaps

Are you superstitious? What sort of things do you do to prevent bad luck befalling you?

I always salute a magpie?! yeh stupid innit

little house on the praire

Never put an umbrella up in the house

Throw salt over left shoulder

Hold collar when i see an ambulance

Never put red and white flowers together without another colour

Never cross on the stairs

Never say goodbye to someone(always bye bye, see you later, speak soon ect)

Never have blossom in the house

Most of these are what i grew up with so more tradition than superstition

I always look for another magpie and my mother tells me of if i put new shoes on the table.

If your giving a purse or wallet as a present always put a penny in it.

Theres loads but still thinking

One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold and seven for a secret never to be told..

Apparently if you only see one you can avert sorrow by saying "good morning Mr. Magpie, how's the wife?"

Rob reckons that you have to hold your collar until you see a dog if a funeral passes by lol I think he may have got mixed up somewhere along the line!

He has this saying though...

"Pick up a knife and you'll get strife"

so if you drop a knife you have to get someone else to pick it up xx

If you give a knife as a gift (nice expensive Henkels for example bought from me) you must recieve a piece of silver back from the person you gave it to else the friendship is cut.

Pontypridd

When I first saw this thread I thought I'm not superstitious, then it hit home just how many habits I have after reading the other posts lol

Never cross on the stairs - I just thought its bad manners.

Never put new shoes on a bed...

I'd not put any shoe on a table for hygiene.

I never walk on cracks in the pavement and avoid walking on 3 drains in a row (just for fun).

Always count magpies, and salute if one is on its own.

Never look at the back of a hanging mirror - you'll see yourself in reverse, your dark side.

I throw salt over my shoulder if I spill some.

I think its lucky if I see a black cat or if a white feather crosses my path.

That's makes me look nuts! lol

Not really superstitious. I passed my driving test on Friday the 13th... maybe some would say that was bad luck for other people on the roads!

Feel sorry for people who own black cats, they must s?!t themselves all the time

Never say the word "PIG" especially on a Friday ..... It's a long standing superstition from the fishing community of Newbiggin in Northumberland, so much so, if the word was mentioned - men would not go to sea the following day, but for some reason, it was worse if said on Friday - why, I have no idea

"I never walk under ladders.....builders dont wear skirts...well not in public"

I always walk under ladders, just to see if anything happens, like...... a really fit hunky builder coming down them. Usually tho its a fat bloke with his ass crack on show lol x

Never say "fog" when you are on a ship - until recently you could be fined a days pay for breaking this rule!

Other sailors superstitions ....

never whistle (same fine as above)

always sleep with your mouth closed,

don't bend down to pick up the soap in the shower - squat down

(these last two were particularly important after a month at sea when, traditionally, buggery became legal - at least that's what I was told by the older seamen when I was 18!)

some Lancashire ones .....

don't bring Lilac into the house

don't put clogs on the table

don't open a brolly in the house

all three welcome Death to your home!

and whatever you do don't hang your washing out on a Sunday or go to bed leaving pots unwashed!!!

Wow, I didnt realise there were so many diverse superstitions out there.... and people who believe in them lol

I don't have a superstitious bone in my body (it's unlucky to be superstitious), and I have walked under ladders in the past and, touch wood, nothing has happened yet.

I wouldn't throw salt over my shoulder coz knowing my luck I'd get some bugger in the eye with it.

Siren's just informed me that it's unlucky to have a pram in the house before the baby is born. Wtf is that all about then, is there a chance he won't like the colour or sommat?

As for opening a brolly in the house, well, if I did that in a confined space then it would probably knock an ornament over or put a hole in the ceiling or again, get some bugger in the eye with it so it makes sense not to do it. Here's a thought though, do the people who make them take them outside to test them?
