FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK FOUR!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Well done fellow athletes (splutter)!

28 people reported progress during Week Three. We're really doing it! That exercise thing we'd heard so much about. Well now we're doing it. We can smugly say "I jog three times a week" and it won't even be a lie!!!

.

.

.

EXPLANATION:

If you're unsure what it's all about, the old thread explains (linked to below) but, in short, from 1st January, we're all trying to improve our fitness through "Couch to 5k" (C25K) which is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I'm using Get Running). A few people are getting fit by other means including walking and cycling - all are welcome.

We're all expecting to be utterly crap at it but we're doing it anyway - yay us!

Old thread: https://m.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/711745

New members are still very welcome - post on this thread and I'll add you to the list next week.

.

.

.

THE OFFICIAL MEMBERS OF THE FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB:

Adam 1971 Struggling with week four runs but getting nearer to completing it each time. Going to repeat it a bit. Ran in short sleeves in the sleet (WTF??? It's bad enough without hypothermia surely. You're improving all the time - and week four is only just officially starting now.)

AdsandGeeky Walking all over the place including to the cinema this week. (How's the walking going? You're about to get married aren’t you? Tell us about that!)

albi nice Newbie. Enjoys doing mud runs and spin classes. (Welcome. Is your knee getting better?)

Bitch_and_Twat . Going to start a Park Run parallel thread. Done a 30 minute combo of runs and walks. (So pleased you're feeling better at last).

BlueWonder Week two done with the third run feeling easy! Slightly sore knees. (You star!!! If it's getting easier, it means it's working!)

BoPeep1 Done two runs this week. Rested over the weekend ready for week four. (Well done - are you feeling ready for week four?)

Chasing waterfalls Ran to badminton. Week three complete. Trying the NHS podcast. (How is the podcast? And you ran to get to yet more exercise - wow!))

_xciter7169 Wasn't going to run in the rain but saw a man running and made himself go for it. (Nice one! Maybe some other jogger saw you go past and then they went out. Like a Mexican wave!)

_riskynrisky Didn't run during week two. Just needs the willpower! (Did you manage to run? How was it?)

goodtimes_888 Being absolutely lovely to everyone on the thread as always. (You're very lovely to everyone and never say what you're up to )

Miles Away Girl Still on week two due to burst eardrum. Will catch up eventually. (Stick with us. You can restart whenever you can but don't give up.)

MrsTrellis Got behind. On week three run two. Will catch up! Been entered into a race against her will.

Yep, this is now the danger period for everyone. Life gets in the way, interruptions for illness or physical niggles, initial enthusiasm waning. Let’s get back on it everyone, running can be life changing - or at least moobs changing!

Morning all, went for run this morning, well I say run, more of a jog!

Question for you, as I tried a new app, I took it steady, did week 3 run 1, technically I should have done run 3 as that's where I'm at. But found that run quite exhausting. Is it a case of 'man up' (as much as a woman can do ) and keep to where I was on the last app or take it easy and get through it at a pace I'm comfortable with???

Just adapt to suit your current level of fitness...as long as you are getting out of breath (but not too much) during your run phases, you will definitely get better if you run three times a week x

Obviously I don’t have a clue what I’m talking about so factor that in (!) but I think a change of pace or a windy day or slightly boggier ground can make it significantly harder or easier. Reserve judgement until you’ve done the next one.

(And how have you run already??? It’s the middle of the night!)

Sooooo.......

Last week was a gruelling week. Over 100 hours worked and no time/energy/will to run at all.

This morning I was up at 5, walked (was dragged) my pooch for 45 minutes, then stared at the treadmill trying to summon the energy to get on it. From somewhere the will came to me, so on I got!! And ah just kept running.....

3.2km (2 miles)!!

Feel totally fucked, but chuffed with myself

Excellent to see this thread....because of my shifts my weeks will be out but I'm still going i have 2x12 hour night shifts to do and will swim after, days off start on wed so week 3 runs will start for me then....in a strange way I'm looking forward to it but that may not last lol

A few guys from work have persuaded me to add strava app to my phone, hopefully I'll get encouragement from them too rather than taking the micky.

Well done everyone

"Excellent to see this thread....because of my shifts my weeks will be out but I'm still going i have 2x12 hour night shifts to do and will swim after, days off start on wed so week 3 runs will start for me then....in a strange way I'm looking forward to it but that may not last lol

A few guys from work have persuaded me to add strava app to my phone, hopefully I'll get encouragement from them too rather than taking the micky.

Well done everyone "

Hi Signorina,

We are about 30 miles away! I’ll have to build up my stamina, and then I’ll run it from Bolton to Chester. Maybe next time.

Good idea to stick at this level for another couple of runs. I'm sure that now you've cracked it once it will seem that much easier next time.

I’ve managed to lose one of my running shoes out of the car boot and I’ve had a knee injury so haven’t run since October. Gonna hit the parkrun this Saturday me thinks.

Anybody wanting to run should just go to the local parkrun whatever your level. They’re ace and for people of all abilities. I’ve seen 70 year olds and 7 year olds. People finish anywhere from 15mins - 60mins and your only racing against your own time. Defo try the parkrun. It’s quality.

Week 3 run 1 done.

I finished nights this morning and went for a swim, had 4 hours sleep then went for my run...

At the time, 90 secs run was good but the 3 mins near the end was a steep uphill (usually I'm walking then!) It nearly killed me, i was just about to scream at her when she said walk, i nearly collapsed lol but kept going....second 90 secs was all uphill, bloody killer but not as long....last 3 mins was level and downhill so it was a lot easier so i carried on till the incline towards the end then walked all the steep hill home......i feel great at my success  yay go me

Well done everyone for getting here and thanks for support and motivation

The program is Couch to 5k or C25K, it builds up your running gradually over 8 or 9 weeks. There are various apps or the NHS podcast you can listen to.

As for motivation, when you complete a week I think you can ask for any sexual favour you like from anyone on the thread.

I’ll have to check the small print on the paperwork but that’s certainly why I’m doing it

Just popping my head in. Tomorrow will mark the end of week three.

My first run I barely made out alive and this evening I did (according to Strava) 3.8k in 27 mins. I’ve no idea if that’s good or not but I’m not giving up.

I’m not following any plan other than to run at least 5-6 times a week and put one foot in front of the other.

I’m still in the walk/run phase but it’s getting easier, faster and now about 80% is running.

I’ve signed up for park run but I won’t be doing it until I know I can do a full 5k.

I still hate running

Yes, definitely...once you can do a session of 4K running/walking...parkrun is the next stage as doing it with others is really motivating...mmm, doing it with others...

Enjoy park run? Isn’t that an oxymoron? I can’t say I’m enjoying running at all but it costs nothing and I love the changes in my CV capacity and the smugness I feel.

I have to remember the high feeling I get afterwards to enable me to drag my arse off the sofa!

Ahhh, runner’s high...not quite as good as an orgasm but still pretty good...

Hi team, can I join the gang, I'd say I'm an experienced very average runner who's best days were long ago, but I'm trying to get back to some semblance of my past self and that journey may as well start here.

I admire anybody who gets out there and does at least something, afterall the hardest part of going for a run is putting your trainers on.

"Just popping my head in.

Well done, that’s why you’re so right for the Fab Crap Runners Club

Agreed - if you start to like running, you're thrown out of the Crap Runners' Club.

MENTAL HEALTH AND RUNNING

Hi all

A few people on the thread have talked about having struggled with mental illness, anxiety or depression and a couple of other people have been in touch with me privately to say it applies to them too.

It seems that lots of us are exercising for both physical and mental health and I'm glad that some people have felt able to say so on the thread. It's not always talked about.

Here's a link to some info from the NHS:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/exercise-for-depression/?

So I think we should all take a moment to reflect on how absolutely marvellous we all are for doing any exercise at all and, for those who have struggled, or are struggling with mental illness - you're extra fabulous you utterly gorgeous sexpots!

I think once we are surrounded by other runners, we will be able to pick ourselves further.

Great thread. I small group has been set up local to me for people wanting to run. There's people of varying abilities from some doing c25k to some running 8k. The main feedback is how everyone is enjoying doing it with others. 1 because some are a bit frightened to go out on the own in the dark evenings and 2 for the encouragement from others. So if anyone is struggling it might be worth having a look on Facebook to see if you have a local group close by. Keep positive.
