What's going on out there? I've seen nose to nose traffic for 3 hours. Has Yorkshire ground to a halt?

When will people learn to drive properly in cold weather and stop blocking junctions. Some prize idiots I've watched when walking the dog.

You don't know how lucky you were walking with snow up to your chin,......

when I was a lad we had to walk on our hands through 20ft drifts barefoot holding our clogs in our teeth..no laces....and that was after a 15 hour shift down pit.....

The problem is many people don't know how to drive in snow, but we don't get enough snow regularly for people to gain experience.

It has just taken me four and a half hours to go 39 miles, most of it crawling along the M62. I wish I had an automatic, I have calves like Linford Christie now!

So the snow has made it faster than it used to be...

Reword to the problem is many people don’t know how to drive!

Snow isn’t the problem, it’s poor driving, too much use of brakes(but not actually braking) causing Dominoe effect, lane hoping in traffic(pointless) lane hogging in moving traffic (generally middle lane) driving too slow(yes weird concept when everything seems to be about speed cameras etc) but slow driving causes as much issues. Bad road design and lack of investment in roads - junctions don’t support the level of traffic they now get. Stupid smart motorways that only work on paper not in reality(smart motorways actually cause more accidents - just less likely to be fatal - however they have caused an increase In fatal accidents before you get to the smart bit due to backlog and congestion they cause) oh and finally biggest problem - too many lorries, roads are too busy to deal with something travelling 30mph slower than rest of traffic! Need to adopt German model and ban lorries at certain times from overtaking, or using inside lanes. And equally where Lorry drivers used to be the knights of the road - their driving standard and courtesy to over users is now disgraceful - interesting fact for you next time you think of letting a lorry pull out to overtake - more than 50% of all fatal accidents on the road involve a lorry directly, over 75% of all accidents on motorways are the result of a lorry pulling out, even where it isn’t directly involved but the knock on effect(Dominoe effect of braking) that’s even before you consider that on an average 100mile journey - the presence of lorry’s increase the journey time by 15mins(that’s based on even if you replaced the lorry with a car so same level of traffic)

What I don’t get is if you were driving along a road at 30mph - and a lorry was at a junction, would you hammer your brakes on to slow that 30mph to let the lorry pull out? No! So why would you equally brake at 70mph to 40mph(dropping 30mph) to let a lorry pull out of the lane? Maintain your speed and let them pull out instead when there a suitable space to do so, just like at a junction(they’ll still cause congestion but at least less likely an accident) there is nothing courtesious about letting one slownlorry out at the cost of 20+ other road users having to brake hard and increasing their journey time!

Sorry rant over - but I drive a lot! And it’s getting worse, and it’s not just down to more cars - it’s behaviours more than numbers!

Let’s hope self driving cars can solve all those problems.
