I don't believe in that sort of thing myself. Honestly... I think it's a load of mumbo jumbo!

But, is it just a bit of harmless fun or, do you take it a bit more seriously?

Is it something more sinister, con merchants praying on the vulnerable, taking people's money and fucking with their heads?

Does it bring comfort or cause more harm than good?

Should it all be banned and the people claiming to have these powers be exposed and ridiculed?

Here and there but more here than there

To be honest, the main aim of every single merchants is to take money of people and to some extent they are also fucking with heads too. (Selling you stuffs that you don't need)

A lot of practitioners sincerely believe in what they do too though.

I believed it all when I was younger but am a total skeptic now. Potentially it can be far from harmless but then so can many things. I don't see a need to ban it.

Massive skeptic. However i went to the palm reader in blackpool and left feeling amazed. I have since realised it was just a lot of generalised statements but I did get a bit caught up in it for a moment.

Is there a portion of society that does need it though?

As it's only potentially harmful and may do good for others, even though most people know or believe it to be a con, we should let the practice exist legally!

I have done Tarot cards most of my life personally and professionally, and have helped many people including myself. I gave up doing Tarot professionally when the company I worked for wanted me to make up things to make the readings longer and more dramatic, not for me I am afraid. They are a tool to tap into the subconscious mind, but can used for other purposes too.

I had my palm read 25yrs ago by a gypsy lady 25yrs ago, I bumped into at a market.

She told me things, very specific & personal in detail, that she could never have possibly guessed.

She also gave me a list of dates, on which life changing events would occur.

So far 15 have!

Do I believe, yes.

But then my great Nana was Romany, and had the same skills.

I went to a clairvoyant when I was 21, and without knowing anything about me (not even my name) she told me personal things she couldn't have picked up on or guessed. Correctly predicted major life events, and scared the hell out of me by suddenly giving me a message of apology from my dead nan, who I hadn't seen since I was 7 due to a family fall out.

Did the same for my friend who was the polar opposite of me in character. Some people definitely have 'the gift'.

So when you watch someone like Derren Brown perform the same mind reading techniques and make predictions and explain how it's done and exposing the trickery...it doesn't make you question the people that market themselves as having special powers possibly using the same technique as Derren Brown?

If you you at trade description of good they are illegal

Anecdotal stories from people of how they knew they had lost a close family member etc are not worth Jack. It's not evidence.

I wastched that and it was amazing when he got the 100 people he knew nothing about not even names amd either 93 or 97 of them said "thats me exactly" its such a scam, i went on a date with a woman who said she had "the gift" and tried to say to me the fact that my drivers seat rear window fogged up because "a someone called danial is sitting there and he really cares about you"....literally no man in my family is called dan so i just laughed

Nothing is unique in the world, it's just a series of re-occuring events and patterns through out life. A student of this can easily tie a few of those patterns together and impress a person wanting to believe.

Statements like "there are a lot of fakes" suggest a belief that there are genuine people with a gift. I find this hard to believe.

If it gives some people hope or helps them cope with a difficult period of life they've been though, is it a bad thing?

But it's down to the reader to interpret them and give them relevance. If you and I went to different readers but picked the same cards, I doubt we'd come away with the same reading. Or, you went to two different readers but picked the same cards? And if you picked different cards at different readers, which is more likely, again your reading would be completely different! Who do you choose to believe? Whichever you like best?

The cards have specific meanings anyway. I couldn't manipulate their meanings.

Cups are emotions, Wands are work and career related, pentacles money, swords are mental, as time frames you have cups=days, Wands=weeks, swords=months, pentacles=years.

I couldn't change what those suits stand for plus the pictures kind of dipict whether the card has a negative or positive association.

Like if you get the tower card you know something shit is going to happen or has happened if the card is demonstrating the past.

If some tarot reader tried telling me that the tower was good or the 3 of swords was good in regards to a love situation I'd tell them to fuck right off.

Most of them used what we called a 'barnum statement', a wide general statement that is likely to be applied to almost anyone, and work from there...

Analyse your non-verbale communication, picking on the slightlest reaction you have when she says or mentions something and infer from there.

Reading tarot cards isn’t a gift. It requires knowledge of the meaning of the cards. Then the cards are simply a mirror of the querant’s subconscious.

I have used them for myself and with others and they have been useful and insightful.

I wouldn’t go to anyone charging for reading them though. I don’t need that kind of ‘help’ to understand myself

I believe it can provide comfort to some, I also believe it can be like counselling to others but like anything if there is money to be made there is a con to be ran.

I do, do tarot readings mostly for my friends and mostly for free. They help to guide the person to answers they already know but don't want to admit in my opinion. Similar to counselling. I do also do the silly ones but I don't put much stock in anyone that claims to know the future.

I think charlatans exist in most walks of life but those pursuits where there's little to no control or insight of evidential management, can open the floodgates to them.

There are recognized techniques that flood 'readers' with information from subjects, including cold reading. These give enormous potential for these people to determine many of the things that they will incorporate, even unconsciously, from people that they observe.

I'm interested in this field but credible evidence is pretty much non-existent. I'd like these people to readily submit themselves to independent validation and pursuit of any evidence that either these fields or they deliver anything approaching reliably convincing substance.

I had a reading done about 25 years ago, it was a free reading by a bloke in a houseshare I was living in.

It was quite a bizarre reading and I laughed it off. However about 75% of it has come true and it was not ordinary stuff like baby's ect. I thought it was a load of nonsense at the time. I also had a very cheap one done at a charity fair and that came mostly true too. So yes I am a believer. But not in people making a living out of it. It's your free ones that are accurate. The gifts aren't meant for making money from, so those charging are mostly talking bullshit. XXX

If it was all genuine then everybody would be millionaires, and nobody would grieve when a loved one dies, because of course you would “contact” your relatives as soon as you die right?

People choose to believe and it brings them comfort in some ways, so each to their own.

But if we are talking logically....

I quite fancy going just to see what they say and make an informed decision on whether I think there is any truth to it.

Having given it some thought in the past, I did think about the times I've been to church and the sermon they give. You can relate what is said to a particular part of your life and it see how it applies to you, but everyone in that church will probably do the same; but how they apply it to what is relevant in their life will be different to everyone else. So if one set of words can mean many different things to different people could tarot readers etc do the same?

It's stuff like that that makes me think there's something in it.

72 cards and she pulled out 7 and she never liked havingvher cards done or anything like that. Her energy was on the cards and they were the ones that were picked. It's like when I'm asking a specific question and I don't like the card, I'll put it back in, shuffle then but pull the same card out, have to read and accept it then!

Explain this please - on 2 consecutive nights many years ago, I awoke to see that the time was 3.33 (am) on my digital alarm clock. Told my mate whilst out for a few beers on the third night. We fell asleep in the living room and when he awoke he asked , "What time is it mate?"

It was 3.33 (for the third night running!). He got quite spooked and we looked in a couple of Bibles at page 333 - nothing. Picked up the 3rd book and it was called "Fate and Fortune" (3 words in tile and was by 3 authors). Turned to page 333 which featured rows of tarot cards - 3rd row down, 3rd card in - the death card - at which point my mate ordered a taxi and left sharpish!

Now, I`m no expert but I understand the death card can mean a new beginning. Should I have been gobsmacked when my only daughter was born at 3.33am several years later!

May all be a co-incidence?

A few years ago a friend got two tickets to a psychic fair at a leisure centre over in Bridgend. She asked me if I wanted to come along with her.

We drove in the car park expecting it to be full up but it was empty. We parked the car and walked over to the entrance. It was locked with a sign on the door...

"Psychic Fair cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances"

Who'd of predicted that eh?

The moon does not effect us mentally one bit including the so called full moon effect. As for the planets, when there are aligned on the same side they have roughly the same gravitational effect upon you as a double decker bus a kilometre away. And when you look up into the night sky some of what you see is no longer there so how can all that effect you?

It is well known that for peoples who still live under the stars (so to speak) a very high percentage of women menstruate in a cycle co-inciding with a new moon - maybe more physical then mental but interesting nevertheless

My son was also born at 3:33, 33 weeks, Delivery Room 3 on my wife’s 33rd birthday

Really, exactly at 3:33 and exactly 33 weeks?"

yes exactly there were a couple of other 3s involved too.

Just as long as it's harmless - no money involved or manipulation - then why not.

But then a lot of "services promise a lot of things but don't necessarily deliver.

So spending money on crap covers a lot of products.

It's about what makes us feel good - it doesn't always work.

"The moon does not effect us mentally one bit including the so called full moon effect. As for the planets, when there are aligned on the same side they have roughly the same gravitational effect upon you as a double decker bus a kilometre away. And when you look up into the night sky some of what you see is no longer there so how can all that effect you?

It is well known that for peoples who still live under the stars (so to speak) a very high percentage of women menstruate in a cycle co-inciding with a new moon - maybe more physical then mental but interesting nevertheless"

It's not true.

Unless you frequent yoga sites or naturalnews type bs pages.

Statistics will show half of women start three days either side of a new or full moon. That's maths not some connection with the energies and your body vibrating at the moon's frequency . Or what ever it is some might say.

The moon controls the tides via gravity which is measurable.gravity is constant. Nothing changes how we act. To claim it does shows a complete lack of understanding

On average there's a full moon every 29.5 days in the UK. So, rather than a strange coincidence it was a 1 in 30 chance happy event for you.

That's the problem with these sort of things, which would someone like to or rather remember, something strange or boring fact?

I'd say at least 90% of the things which i have seen in the cards yes.

I once worked on a tarot line and someone had rang in and spoke to another reader. When the reading was over she asked the reader where her partner was. The reader asked me. I spread my cards out whilst asking where he was and told the reader to tell her he was in Switzerland. Which was true.

None, it's all unprovable nonsense people choose to believe in to make themselves feel better rather than dealing with their own emotions or facts

With all due respect, I tentatively still ask was it exactly 3:33 and 33 weeks (no days)? As for your good lady's birthday, a 1 in 365 chance of that.

A friend's two children were both born on Friday 13th of the same month! He wasn't very impressed when I said it was probably due to him only being allowed sex once a year!

Not on your Nelly "

If it's 29.5 days since the last one, yes.

There's one on Facebook, I think called Sally Anne psychic or something like that that I've noticed quite a few of the otherwise rational women on my friends list following. I looked on the page and I'm convinced these people are mental, how do they even believe such rubbish and even more so how are they prepared to part with decent sums of cash for readings or items like "mojo bags" etc?!

Hey, if their happy!

I live near, and visit, Glastonbury regularly. There are lots of people there that think they are witches or wizards and that they have special powers!? Or maybe they have! They seem happy and are certainly friendly. Plenty of mystic capitalists to empty a believers bank account there though. I'm sure some of Glastonbury's residents and visitors would make people on that Facebook page (if not on there themselves) look sane!

"Explain this please - on 2 consecutive nights many years ago, I awoke to see that the time was 3.33 (am) on my digital alarm clock.

My son was also born at 3:33, 33 weeks, Delivery Room 3 on my wife’s 33rd birthday

Really, exactly at 3:33 and exactly 33 weeks?

It was a full moon the night before. (associated with women going into labour)

We were looking out of the bedroom window and my wife laughed saying ‘Lots of women will be going into labour’

I retorted by saying ‘It would be no bad thing if the baby came early’ as I was due to be on the other side of the world near to when he was due)

Her water’s broke at dawn....

Statistically no more babies are born under a full moon, another old wife's tale.

I didn’t say there were, it’s a myth but strange coincidence all the same

On average there's a full moon every 29.5 days in the UK. So, rather than a strange coincidence it was a 1 in 30 chance happy event for you.

That's the problem with these sort of things, which would someone like to or rather remember, something strange or boring fact?

The chances of being born at 3:33 at 33 weeks on my wife’s 33rd birthday?

With all due respect, I tentatively still ask was it exactly 3:33 and 33 weeks (no days)? As for your good lady's birthday, a 1 in 365 chance of that.

A friend's two children were both born on Friday 13th of the same month! He wasn't very impressed when I said it was probably due to him only being allowed sex once a year!

Yep both were exact. I looked at the clock and know what day we had sex on "

That's really interesting. The odds on it happening must be tiny.

In our family the males on the maternal side are born on consecutive dates of the same month in each successive generation. E.g. my grandfather on the 10th my brother on the 11th and my nephew on the 12th. Not quite as spectacular as your example though.

"i think there lots of real ones out there..some things cant be explained away with science ...the moon effects us all.why shouldnt the other planets

The moon does not effect us mentally one bit including the so called full moon effect. As for the planets, when there are aligned on the same side they have roughly the same gravitational effect upon you as a double decker bus a kilometre away. And when you look up into the night sky some of what you see is no longer there so how can all that effect you?

well i know the full moon effects me ..makes feel good ,happy, restless and unable to sleep .."

you realise the moon has no effect other than gravity?

it doesn't increase or decrease on how much is visible

The remarkable coincidence has meant absolutely diddly squat in terms of how his or our lives since evolved though

I cannot disagree. I hadn’t thought about it for a long time although I’ve retold the story quite a few times. 333 has a lot of meaning in numerology but I have seen no evidence of any spiritual significance in the event. So I’ll stick with it being a remarkable coincidence and a good story

I absolutely 100% believe. I have had far too much proof not too... I also believe there are a large number of people who say they have a gift but actually don't but make money out of it. I have had a number of sessions with a very gifted medium over the years who is exceptional.., she comes straight out with the name of the person she is getting messages from and gives detailed info that isn't a guess.. My last reading with her was incredible and everything she told me has happened exactly like she said it would.. I also am quite in tune with my spiritual side and things can come into my head from nowhere that then also come true..

I believe I was warned by spirit Christmas Day 2016, it was the evening and I was relaxing in my lounge with a female friend.. I suddenly heard a loud knock at my kitchen door. I got up to answer the door and my friend asked me where I was going. I told her to answer the door, she said she had not heard the door.. When I walked into my kitchen I could smell very strongly gas.. I opened the kitchen door to vent the room, sure enough no one was at the door. I had to call the emergency gas number, someone was with me within half an hour and they turned the gas off to my boiler and condemned it... Had I not heard my door, one flick of a light switch and we could have gone boom!!

I absolutely know that spirit made me hear that knock at my door...

People who don't believe in all this stuff should have a read of Sapiens to see just how much of what we blindly believe is actually fiction. It's an interesting read and makes you realise that every single one of us believes in something that isn't actually real.

When you next talk to your spirit , politely ask where it was when Grenville towers went up ? Or the earthquake where 500 died or the tsunami or the mudslide or the other thousands of events where an early warning from a spirit would have helped

You had luck , you most likely smelt the gas as it has an aroma, if only the house where the 3 children died had had your luck or perhaps your spirit guide thinks your life more important than the young children that tragically die each day

The concept is nonsense and particularly offensive to those who have tragically lost loved ones x

You have to be open to the spirit world to allow it in... I didn't say I spoke to spirit just that I believe I was warned by spirit... Oh btw I know what tragic loss is. My sister at 2 years old drowned. Is that tragic enough for you??? Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I have had proof many times over the years... I am not about to sit and detail them all as it only means something to me..

Oh and I didn't smell the gas before I entered the kitchen, the door into the kitchen from the rest of the house was closed... You are entitled to your opinion. I have not trashed your opinion so please kindly don't trash mine. Just accept we believe different things.. It's ok to be different...

Not to you maybe, but then it didn't happen to you.. I was also a firm believer at the time anyway, as my belief was given to me in my early 20's, I have had many experiences, that make me believe. I am now 46 and my mind remains open to these things.. You are allowed to think what you like and I will think what I like..

If someone had said two hundred years ago that a person in Britain and a person in Australia could communicate with each other. instantaneously or that someone could travel from London to New York in less than ten hours, they would have been told both things were impossible.

Now we take both for granted, which is fucking amazing. And you know why we can do stuff like that? Because people thought hard about the material world, and worked hard to improve our interactions with it. . They didn't think "spirit guides" and such like would solve things for them.

If there really was a way of communucating with the dead or with spirits or whatever, the people who could do it would be winning Nobel prizes not peddling their "gifts" for thirty quid a head in the Basingstoke hippodrome.

I am really and truly astonished that anyone believes such things.

But, is it just a bit of harmless fun or, do you take it a bit more seriously?

Is it something more sinister, con merchants praying on the vulnerable, taking people's money and fucking with their heads?

Does it bring comfort or cause more harm than good?

Should it all be banned and the people claiming to have these powers be exposed and ridiculed?"

If exploiting idiots was made illegal then say goodbye to politics, big business and most of what passes for culture.

There is complete consensus that Sussex exists and all maps, books etc agree as to its location. I have followed maps to get to Sussex and every time things panned out as the maps said they would. There is thus overwhelming evidence Sussex exists and it would be utterly unreasonable to doubt it.

It's just not comparable with clairvoyants and so on.

"I absolutely 100% believe.

No sorry. That's not proof

give james randi a ring

he has an account set up with 1 million pound in it

all you have to do is prove you have these powers you have proof about and the million is yours.

how easy could it be?

I will put a fiver down that you wont be a millionaire any time soon

But you only believe it exists because other people believe it exists. The maps and the books are just physical manifestations of an imagined boundary.

Well yes, Sussex as a concept only exists because people decided to call a bit of land by that name. . The land itself clearly does exist.

I am not sure what your point is here. If you are saying that Sussex as a concept only exists in human minds, just as the idea of spirit guides exists in human minds, then you are of course right.

But those who believe in spirit guides claim more than that. They claim such things exist outside of and independent of human minds, just like the land we call Sussex would exist even if there were no people to call it by that name.

That is what is nonsense.

Sussex exists outside of and independent of human minds, there are local authorities, groups, societies etc which all depend on people who live within an imagined boundary believing that boundary exists. The fact that the land exists regardless of what you call it has no bearing on that.

All those groups you mention are comprised of human beings, hence Sussex as a concept exits solely in the minds of those people.

Put it this way. If all human beings were wiped out tomorrow, Sussex as a concept would cease to exist along with all other concepts forged in the human mind. The land we call Sussex would still exist.

As I say, I am not sure what you are arguing here.

Sussex isn't the land so isn't real. The spirit world has no tangible form so isn't real.

We're happy to believe in one but not the other. I just wonder why.

Its obvious

People claim the spirit world exists independently of human beings and can effect the physical world. That's obviously untrue.

On the other hand, there is an island we call Britain that dies exist independently of human minds. We have decided it's useful to imagine divisions of that island and call them by names like Sussex. We have all agreed to call one particular division by that name. The existence of Sussex depends on that agreement

The boundaries between counties very definitely exist. They have been discussed and agreed upon and layed out on maps. The boundary may be invisible in places but a lot of the time the boundaries are roads or tracks or natural phenomena like rivers, hedges, valleys, gorge's, hills. All very visible things. Land boundaries are man made concepts generally created for political, legal and power distribution reasons. We don't need to prove it exists as a physical manifestation, it's there and works through general consensus. They are so real and believed in that wars are fought over them! However, there is no general consensus as to the existence of a spirit world!!

I see no sensible relevance in using an argument as to whether believing Sussex exists, justifies and proves the existence of a spirit based world or power or gift. Very philosophical if not slightly silly, but not big or clever and, I think arguments like that just help to feed our skepticism!

I haven't used it to argue that the spirit world exists. In fact I think it's a fairly strong argument against it.

I agree that if life as we know it ceases to exist then so does the concept of Sussex but at the moment it exists as a concept with physical form.

In theory, if you are a believer, we will all become part of the spirit world which will continue to flourish surely, even with no one left to believe in it?

Not convinced it's a relevant argument for or against. I will read through it again later.

I agree on the general point, but I think you have to distinguish between subjective and objective reality.

Subjective reality existed only in the human mind. Both the concept of Sussex and the concept of the spirit world exist in and only in the human mind.

Objective reality exists outside the human mind. Hence the land we call Sussex exists outside the human mind. The spirit world exists nowhere other than in the human mind.

We believe we are all greater than the sum of our parts. How people realise or tap into that is another matter.

In our experience prayer and personal ministry does make a difference and can be a significat help. It's also part of simply living at peace even in a storm.

We don't disparriage spritualists or faith healers, but we do tread carefully on that side of things.

"

And people still are fighting wars over both physical and spiritual concepts. The latter down purely to some peoples reluctance to accept others rights to hold different beliefs. Although some beliefs are destined to conflict against others it's not beliefs that start wars.

Your statement about the subjective and objective reality says to me that the existence of Sussex is a bad example. So is there an example of subjective reality that everyone can agree on or is that the nature of subjective reality?

Does the spirit world exist only in the human mind or, is it something we all feel and experience but some have chosen an alternative description for what others happily accept as coincidence or base remnants of our animal instincts that occasionally surface that feel alien but Part of human nature is to justify?
