"I did run 3 of week 2 on Tuesday but the app says I need 2 rest days before starting week 3.
What do you reckon, do it tonight as I’ve had one rest day or leave it until tomorrow?"
Either. As long as you have one rest day and listen to your body if you do feel tired you'll be fine |

"Week 2 run 2 completed this morning
No sign of murderers-jumping,-out-of-bushes OP, guess I'm one scary looking person when I'm running "
They’re probably thinking “I could never catch such an elite athlete”. |

Is it too late to join in?
Whats the goal?
Be nice having a bit of motivation as running is far from my excercise of choice but no denying the results it gives |

The goal is on one of the earlier threads, basically it’s doing the Couch to 5k fitness program (there’s an NHS podcast or various apps to coach you through it).
First question for membership entry - are you crap at running?
1. No, I’m pretty fit.
2. Yes, I was always picked last for teams in PE and things haven’t improved in the last 20 years.
3. I’m too puffed out to type a reply |

Everyone is welcome on this thread (speaking for Mrs. T and Adam who started it!), but it’s main purpose is for those who want to start (or return) to running.
I’m planning an “improvers” thread as a follow-up in 6-9 weeks’ time (and happy for other coaches to join me on that one when the time comes). So watch out for that in due course by keeping tabs on these threads over the weeks.

"No running for me today, but as I'm working from home, may do a session on the rower at lunchtime. Or maybe on the Mrs if the kids aren't around ??"
Ha ha ha - you only get respect for horrible exercise - not the fun stuff! |

Of course you're welcome - everyone is welcome. The Crap people get to be members, and the competent people get to tell the Crap people how utterly fabulous we are!
This thread explains everything:

Yep - although on a positive note, I’ve now lost 6 and a half pounds since Jan 1st...and cracked my coffee habit (at the cost of caffeine withdrawal headaches on top of catarrh, coughing, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting). It’s definitely the fault of exercise! |

I've just done my week 2 run 2. I'm using Zenlabs c25k it's good and free. I added map my run too as it gives me distance 3.78km today in my half hour. And changed route but ended up going past 2 chippys today |

OK there’s a challenge - the PCB - Personal Chippy Best - or maybe the PRB - Personal Restaurant Best (including fast food, pubs, etc)...2 is the best so far...prize for the winner in a sexual favour from either Mrs T or Adam...

Overdid it last weekend. Stiff for three days...and not in the best way! Will tone it down in future... |

What’s it like doing it with a club? I see a running club around here but they all look super fit and I don’t think any of them weigh more than 45kg"
Find a club with a beginners section. Not all have them but many will have one focused on the c25k plan and usually including a graduation event at the nearest parkrun. Two of the local clubs round here that have done this for a couple of years have visibly changed their demographic when you see them at local events with a much broader spread of age and ability than the speedy whippets that primarily they used to have |

That’s really good. A friend who helps run a Park Run told me they’re really keen to attract more walkers and beginners. I think I’ll try a park run after the nine weeks of couch to 5 k. Shame we’re not all near each other, we could stagger across the finishing line together! |

My girlfriend's club the beginners have 2 run leaders for their training runs, for their graduation they all run together with the 2 leaders and finish in a group. And many of the other club member attend even if they aren't regular parkrunners to cheer them home. I love it, it's incredibly inclusive because no one has to worry about being last or no one waiting at the finish.
But even on a normal week may of the faster runners stay to cheer in the slower runners and the few runners that attend. One of the thing that I love about Parkrun is that it is so many different things to so many different people, whether it;s the goal of a newbie or just another training run for faster runners, or a social run, it incorporates it all and no one looks out of place |

Someone from here told me about it, it started last week on week 1 couch potato to 5k, for beginners/non runners, went on my own don't feel out of place all women, the plus side it's free 3 x runs a week, it finishes with the local park run which is in March, was round a local park lake today was a nice change |

Good plan. How much running vs walking are you planning? "
Hoping to cut the walking down, possibly 1 minute jog 2 minute walk (as opposed to 3 walking last time) then maybe increase the jog time next one. But playing it all by ear and seeing how i feel atm |

I just did almost another 4 miles today, going from nothing to doing 8 mile walk in less than a week, I say that’s prettt good going. The walk today was in to town, walked round there and back home again, it was a different route today and not one I’m familiar with so didn’t have my ‘check points’ plus had my two teenagers with me constantly reminding me that I walk slow, I had my ear phones in with my walking music on the way there but naturally they wanted to talk so found it a bit harder plus walking with people made it very different too.
Still I’m doing it!!

"I just did almost another 4 miles today, going from nothing to doing 8 mile walk in less than a week, I say that’s prettt good going.

Fantastic! Doing a walk instead of taking the car every so often is bound to help and that’s an impressive amount to rack up |

"I did run 2 of week 3 today and failed. I had to walk for the last 30 seconds of the final 3 minute run, doing it uphill was a killer
Disappointed though because I managed it on Thursday "
You didn't fail! Not every run is going to be amazing! |

Sadly I have no car at the moment, so the walking thing is a must now, I’m going to get in two big walks a week and build myself up.
I work 1.8 miles away and the thought of walking there and back 5 days a week kinda depresses me, so I’m going to work out a plan of when to walk and when to get the bus, anything is a major improvement from what I was doing lol.

I’m going to buy a weekly ticket, it’s not a lot of money really plus also we have cinema cards so it means we can at least still go to the flicks, With the money we are going to save on insurance, petrol and tax it will save me about £200, so take off bus fare it will be about £150 we will be saving per month so that’s a huge difference!

"No running for me today, Sundays the day of rest , but I have done something I'd never thought I would do.... Signed up to the 5k Race for life
Good for you, are you collecting sponsorship?"
Most definitely. Decided to drag my daughter along to run alongside me, so far she's keen lol |

That’s good - this is the only way these races raise money for Cancer Research btw. The entry fee is taken by the events company, and they use local volunteers to marshal. It’s still a good thing of course for lots of reasons, but many participants aren’t aware of this. PM us if you would like a donation |

I think there are male only events out there, but less well-known...maybe prostate cancer (for example) is less high profile than breast cancer? |

Not quite expert, but have been doing it a long time!
Running does put a lot of stress on knees and ankles, but there are ways to reduce it. As mentioned above, proper running shoes will make a big difference, compared to your old green flash plimmies
Yes they're a bit more expensive, but well worth the investment. And again as above, get them from a proper running shop that will put you on a treadmill, video you, and then not only help you choose the correct pair, but will also be able to give you some specific advice about your personal running style and how you might be able to tweak it to de-stress your joints.
The other thing you can do is get off the pavement and get onto a softer surface like grass or trail. Find yourself a local park and I'm sure that you'll find it much easier on the joints.
Make sure you rest up between runs too, give your joints time to recover. Even the professionals need to rest! |

Yep, good advice. Also, if you can’t run, walk...it’s low impact and very good exercise and will help strengthen your muscles. |
