So how clean is the air at your place? We scored a 1!

It's definitely polluted in there. For a good half hour after as well...

I wouldn't put too much reliance on the BBC info.

I just put in a post code where the air quality was rated as very bad 6 months the ago. Nothing has changed to improve air quality as it's due to road traffic.

Yet The BBC gives a 1. Totally opposite the official result.

I was wondering where they got their information from. My daughter lives by a very busy A road into London, and by an industrial estate that has hundreds of lorries and cats going in and out day and night, and her address got a 2 also.

I thought it was the company "earthsense" that had compiled the data, rather than the bbc.

I don't know who compiled the data but the BBC presented it. The area I checked By post code that was rated a 1 but in reality was well above Gorverment guidelines when tested last year.

To clarify.

The post code has higher than recommended NO2 levels. So should rate as a 6 but came up a 1

It's a one here in rural south Somerset. I think it's safe to say that's fairly accurate for this area. Not sure about some of the other postcodes I tried though!

So your saying the government would say air pollution is bad in an area when it’s actually good. Seems a little bit backwards to me.

No the area I mention has been independently tested. The NO2 values are higher than the government recommend ie the air is very very polluted.

Yet using the bbc post code checker you get a 1. ie good quality air.

Whose right ? Knowing the area the bbc are wrong

The bbc didn't do the sampling...

Gosport

I'm not convinced anyone has done the sampling at sufficient frequency in every postcode to get accurate data. Looking at the organisation behind this it looks to be based on some sampling and a whole lot of computer modelling.

I also have issues with the BBC claiming in the article that these are the most polluted postcodes based on just one airborne species. Lots of postcodes have very significant problems with things like heavy metals and dioxin pollution in the soil etc.

I’m NOT saying the BBC did do the sampling. However if you visit the bbc news web site science section the article has a post code search function which gives you the result.

So I’m getting the result via the BBC.

My comments stay the same. The answer given ( via the BBC) differs vastly from independent results.

A rating of 1 means there is an extremely low chance of nitrogen dioxide levels exceeding the annual legal limit. The air in your area is generally clean.

This is the same as the average for Perth and Kinross, which is 1 out of 6 (good).

Air quality is very disingenuous by postcode, you can have reasonable air quality at one end of the street and poor at the other depending on the air flow and how it's trapped, also you can take a reading at 6ft high that say would be average but at 2ft high is piss poor
