claiming PPI without getting shafted

So a couple of years ago I got some dodgie company to check if I was owed any ppi and apparently they found out that I am owed a concideral amount (there words) but for them to tell me how much and off who they wanted if I remember correctly 35%/40% of it so needless to say they was pointed in the direction of where the sun don't shine. As I don't really need it I've just left it knowing it's money in the bank but now I think it's time to get it sorted out but it will be a frosty day in hell before I'll sign almost half of it away. So my question is has any of you lot claimed it back yourself. If so where did you start and how do I go about it. If any of you can point me in the right direction there's a pint in it for you

Yes I have and it's very easy.

Firstly find the bank that owes you.

Go to their website. They will have a standard form to fill out.

Fill out form.

Sit and wait

Check out money saving expert for tips but generally you're just going to have to tell truth on the forms

Yep. The forms take 10-20 mins tops to fill out, they need account details if you have them but previous address will do.

Honestly, think the last one I got was £3800 for 15 mins work

That's why you need not use the brokers. They are litterally getting money for nothing. And! If you still have a ballence with your creditor they will likely reduce your ballence, not give you a cheque and you'll still owe the broker.

If there isn't a form on the company website you'll also find email / letter templates on the moneysavingexpert site.

I did all mine myself. Some took a few emails / letters back and forth, taking a while to get sorted.

Others were done and dusted with one email.

Yeah we've done it by writing directly to the bank that sold us the ppi. It took about three or four weeks to send a cheque.

My dad claimed back his PPI via one of those companies who do it for you. They took about half of the money and it took them a few months.

My mum did it herself. She asked in the branch when she went into the bank for something else and they gave her the correct form. She filled in the form, sent it into them and they sent her a cheque within a few weeks. She got the whole lot and didn't have to pay someone for doing something she was capable of doing herself.

These companies who do it for you are rip off merchants, don't give them your money.

If it was 10 or even 20% to save my time I'd happily let them do it after all we all need to make a butty but 40% seriosly I'd rather watch it burn

I wrote two letters to my bank 1 saying i had several loans in the past no idea how much, how long for or any reference numbers but said i wanted the ppi back, about 2 weeks later i got a a very nice suprise paid into my account.

The second letter to my bank said that 20ish years before for a couple of years i had been signed up for an account that charged me money for perks i never used and they paid me back with interest.

Happy days and just cost the price of 2 stamps and 10 minutes of my time.

They repay the ppi payments you made, plus interest, plus compensation minus tax. You don't need to have owed a huge amount.

Did 2 claims for ppi, one from a credit card, just phoned them and said I had been missold ppi and would like to claim it back, got a cheque from them for just over £8000.

The other was from the bank for loans I had, they contacted me and said I could claim back ppi if I wanted to. Got a cheque off them for just under £12000. Went shoe shopping lol

I went into my bank for an account review and they gave me a number to ring to claim back off of them!! So I did and they turned the claim down which I thought oh well never mind as I'd exaggerated about how I didn't understand what was happening. About 2 month later I got a call from 'my bank saying they were re-evaluating refused claims and to resubmit. I was sceptical and said send me the details which they did on bank headed paper and so i re applied and got back 2500 quid

You don't need your account numbers as they are likely historic. All you need are your addresses, names (they may have changed through marriage) and DOB. Simply write or call your bank or banks that you have had lending with and ask them if there has been any PPI attached to any loans, overdrafts, credit cards or mortgages as it could have been applied to all of the above. If you don't ask, the bank or lender does not 'really' have to disclose the information, just release the information you have asked for, so it is best to state ANY lending you may have had. If PPI is found, get the dates, consider your argument and call them back when you advise them of why you have been missold.

Gave them the bank info they then sent about 15 forms for different loans and gave reference nos (no fee)

Many years ago (I’m talking ten years or so when ppi thing first came about) I claimed back about £300 from my bank, I just wrote them them using a template I found on the interwebs. I also did it for a car I was paying monthly from one of those car companies if you couldn’t get credit elsewhere kind of places, I think they wrote that off though through how much I had to back back.

I got around £5k back a few years ago from PPI on credit cards & loans.

But in past 6 months, I have learned you can now claim PPI on Mortgages, plus even claim back the monthly fees on your bank accounts, if you had the type of account which gave you so many perks or discounts (a lot of which you never used).

I had a few small loans of £4000 and 2 credit cards. My dad got loads back too from Barclays and HSBC.MBNA are bastards to get PPI off. Still trying now with them.

It's all worth a try worse thing they can say is NO! "

If MBNA are not responding, make a complaint - all banks have to follow the regulatory guidelines on PPI & recording complaints. Push it down that route (stay polite, but firm) and I’ll be surprised if they don’t resolve it quickly (with some additional money to settle the complaint!)

" i need to try this! But can't remember account numbers

Thank you! I'll get on it."

Guess they only joined Fab for PPI advice then went UNLOS!

"So if had say an egg card and a loan from alliance and Leicester what's happens if these don't exist any more?"

Whoever bought out alliance & Leicester will still honour it. I think Egg had a parent company, same applies there.

At least they know how to find out - the difficulty is the misselling bit. Some banks have an auto remuneration if under set limits but if it's in the £0000's you are going to have to answer sometimes some quite probing questions.

After reading this thread I thought about it and realised that I'd had 4 loans from the same bank and two mortgages from another so went to their website, 5 minutes on each to fill out the form online, now keeping my fingers crossed
