Get it diagnosed. Too many people say shin splints when they don’t know what it really is ! I also thought it was more from over use too ... but I’m not doctor !
Iirc it’s more a dull ache than a snapping shin feeling. A stress fracture on the other hand ... |

Shin splints covers so many things that it’s best to get to a doctor.
For now rest and ice when you can.
Proper shoes and gait analysis will also help to make sure you are supported correctly.
When you do start back, start slowly and preferably as flat as you can. |
