I hate self assessment... it's supposed to be relatively straight forward to do.... but it's not!

Why do they make these things so complicated for us to do and then make it hard to get help..

Because they want to keep the plebs and peasants in their place

I went to help my friend with her tax return over Christmas

I reckon she'll be submitting round about June time

She said " Ive got these figures. Is that enough"

" erm no, you appear to have missed out a big chunk of the year and they might want to know why"

Because they're employed in a normal job and they hate that you're your own boss. I've never found it difficult to get help once I get through the auto-response HMRC phone line. That's the difficult part.

Totally agree, did and paid mine on the 9th December, got an Email today saying thumb screws were ready if I didnt pay... checked and £20 was unpaid from last year which wasnt added to this years final balance so was of course not paid... So I paid it by debit card. Logged back in this afternoon just to see a 0 balance... And it still shows £20 unpaid!

Shifted £40,000 over the bank holiday weekend bank to bank, 9am on 2nd January it was completed, and all balances updated. So how come the tax office computer can't show payments made instantly!!!

Bloody system is a nightmare!

Rant done... But if I vanish on 1st Feb, you know who has taken me...

If you’re new to self assessment then you have my sympathies pal, however...

I find it very simple and straightforward myself.

Have been doing it online for around 8 years and before that on paper since the age of 17.

It’s usually peoples poor bookkeeping and accounting that causes problems.

Make time every week to keep your records straight and up to date and then come self assessment time it’s a doddle.

When I first started I went to the citizens advice and a very stern but helpful lady showed me how important it is to keep accurate weekly records of everything tax/income/expenses related, perhaps you could pay them a visit.

Good luck with it

Just make sure you file on time and if you aren’t sure, ask a professional. Not your mate in the pub. You will however more than likely pay less tax taking your mates advice but have an enquiry within the next 12 months.

When I was self employed I paid a accountant about £25 a week (which was tax deductible also) and also vat registered which which actually covered the cost of the accountant fees. When it did get to a point where I became a PAYE employee and had a huge tax bill to pay from when I was self employed (£2956) my accountant desolved the 'company' and the debt.

I have no issue with the paying of taxes just to be clear...

Mg issue is that to introduce something that should be simple to do, isn't that simple.

As a result it causes stress to so many people and as previous people have said when there is money owes they are very keen to get their money... which I must add they are not due..

Oh well next on the list is sort a tax advisor for the next one...

"Government sanctioned robbery.

The tax paid is disproportionate to that.

I've paid tens upon tens of thousands in tax, more than I've ever taken (last Dr visit was as a child) or probably ever will..enough for my own private doctor.

If one goes private do you get tax relief? No.

A friend went self employed at the beginning of last year.

After a bit of nudging, she has kept everything up to date on some spreadsheets that I setup. I've set queries that will answer all the boxes she needs, so a trial run went well.

But...

I can see how difficult it would be for someone if they let it go for a while. Keeping on top of it is the key.

It is important to have an accountant, BUT you need to know the numbers to the nearest 10,000 or so. That way you can ensure your accountant is not to far out, cos the tax man doesn't chase the accountant.

I am happy to pay taxes, but I have 3 income streams which sometimes get complex, and I worry that 70% or more of what I am paying is gone in the cost of collecting.

Ok seriously if you are earning or capable of earning or turning over enough to pay over 30 000 in tax then you are rich enough to pay for serious advice or clever enough to work it out yourself

The maths isn't difficult

We turn over over 2 million and I don't pay over 300000 in vat or tax

If it was 30 000 as company or personal tax that means you took home over 100 000

Vat wise it means a net take of 150 thousand after input has been subtracted

I have been very lucky, have property paid for earning rent, have skills that are well priced with very low overhead and a well paid hobby. My turn over is nowhere near 2million, but I don't have much in the way of costs.

It's not about the money, it's the cost of the process. Paid the outstanding £20 and its no big deal as I am not working for a few weeks, but the arguing over small change especially when several people are involved, often costs more than the debt. Which is what annoys me.

No your op was suggesting self assessment was difficult , no it isn't and certainly not if you have the earnings to be charged 30 000 in tax , hope hope they fine you for wasting their precious time

I always over pay by at least 500 as then they pay ME interest above bank rate

You are earning outstanding money you sound like a London banker whinging that the food banks won't give them free food

To you perhaps..this man will find other things easy that you will struggle with..earning lots does not mean you should be able to find a tax return easy, how stupid.

I won't tell you what i earn but according to you I should find tax returns very easy..I don't. I struggle with all paperworks. The ability to do paperwork has zero to do wit intelligence or business acumen.

"I smell some bull shite

Take fucking responsibility for yourself and your finances not try to blame the system for your failings "

I never said self assessment was difficult, just the system is badly flawed. How can I use their system, pay them the money and it doesn't show the payment made? Every business with online transactions handle this with ease, but not the tax man...

It will lead to a too and fro that will cost hundreds in my time and theirs, and I did over pay that year and received a refund before they decided I was £20 short. Then the system failed to add it to the payment requested in December when I put my self assessment in, which caused someone to email me threats today.

P.S. I am not the OP on this thread.

No but paying the accountant would not be difficult would it x

Or perhaps the next thread should read

Lol I did not say that nor imply such , my clear analogy was regarding a person earning a lot whinging about their mistake

As it happens 30 000 in tax would mean earnings of

11500 0

33500 6700

52200 23300

Thus earnings after all expenses being £97200

But if he is self assessment there are 2 payments the same each year on account thus his tax is 60 thus another £66 600 earned

His 20 under payment his fault , we receive a notice of how much we owe well before the due date and can double check upon our gov gateway

It's a bit like Wayne Rooney having a credit card bill , under paying by 20 then bitching they have charged him interest or a late pay fee

And again the self assessment form is simple

Yes no boxes which you will know the answer and then how much

Did you receive rent this year

Yes no

How much

Did you make profits this year on UK company

How much , or loss .how much

Were you employed

Y n

How much

Did you receive dividends

How much

It really is simple
