Cambridge

Happy New Year and congratulations on joining the Fab Crap Runners' Club - it's the start of a fitter you.

Now's the time to take that first step. Download a "Couch to 5k" app and get out there. This club is for all of us who are overweight, uncoordinated, unfit, hopeless at sport and, crucially, absolutely convinced that we'll never, ever be able to run 5k without dying.

If you're crap, you're welcome, and the crapper you are, the more welcome you are!

Please post on this thread to let us know how you get on with this week's Couch to 5k runs.

It doesn't matter if you find it hard - that's fine. It doesn't matter if you feel daft. It doesn't matter if you need to repeat a run or if life gets in the way a little, or if you fall behind a bit, just stick with us and keep posting. We'll all support each other and laugh when things go wrong and, with every step we take, we'll be a little bit healthier.

.

.

.

EXPLANATION:

If you're unsure what it's all about, the old thread explains (linked to below) but, in short, from 1st January, we're all going work through "Couch to 5k" (C25K) which is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I'm using Get Running). We're all expecting to be utterly crap at it but we're doing it anyway - yay us!

Old thread: https://m.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/711745

New members are still very welcome - post on this thread and I'll add you to the list next week.

Phew, that post is a marathon in itself

If anyone is feeling up to it, there are many park runs on tomorrow as a bonus

My local one starts at 1030, only to be undone by the bacon butties being served afterwards

Planning my first outing using the app later today...first run in 2 years...I’m taking this (very) gently as I’m 2 stone (20%) heavier than when I ran marathons...and injuries are not something I want to experience again.

Also trying to “give up the booze and the one night stands” (Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty)...well the booze anyway

Good luck everyone!!!

Hi all, I was gonna do a run today, but I’m in bed with a cold. No excuse for you lot tho I’m not the most experienced runner, but I’m happy to help if I can.

The best advice I had was to RUN REALLY SLOWLY.

Good luck everyone

I survived!!!!

I’ve done Week One Run One!!!!

It was hard but achievable. Now I’m drinking tea which, frankly, is much nicer. But I feel all buzzy and proud of myself. I’m smiling to myself.

If you’re hesitating, just do it. I’m properly unfit but I survived. Go for it!!!!

Thanks! And I must say thanks for the forum in the first place. It must've taken effort listing everyone that's doing it and stuff, and got me off my arse. So you are officially awesome.

I may even try going out tomorrow...i thought it was an every day thing? My app didn't say.

Ah! Mine says every other day. Bear in mind I don't have a clue what I'm talking about but my understanding is that the exercise kind-of traumatises your muscles and tendons and stuff, and during the rest-day your body repairs the "trauma" and, in doing so, your muscles 'n' stuff get stronger. (Stop me if I baffle you with science!)

As for the list - it appeals to my geeky nature. I made a spreadsheet and everything!

Well done though. It shouldn't get any harder than it was today because, as the runs get longer, you'll be getting fitter. Enjoy the after-glow!

I've done a 15, 18 and 20k run up and down some quite steep hills in the last few days and my ankles a bit sore now

A hot bath with Epsom salts and then a very cold shower on the legs afterwards helps a lot.

"Well done. Very impressive if you managed it today!!

There is tons of good information about how to treat shin splints online.

First, you use rest and try to reduce the inflammation by using ice or in this weather you can take a cold shower on your lower legs. Ibuprofen also helps.

once all the pain has gone you can start strengthening exercises. If the pain returns while doing the strengthening exercises stop and go back to the rest and cold therapy.

after the strengthening then start to slowly increase exercise using a bike first then running on a soft surface like grass or a treadmill.

Here’s a handy tip, if it feels like you’re about to collapse and your lungs are making a bid for freedom up through your throat, simply run past an attractive woman.

You instantly go from hunched over to upright, you lift your knees higher and what sounds like the last gargle of death changes to a happy whistle. At least until you’re out of sight again

What an excellent idea! I’m an experienced runner and this is a great way to a fitter healthier, sexier and happier you.

I’ve always enjoyed running, I find the mental release (time to think) to be the best thing about it. It’ll be tough for some to begin with but stick with it.

Any advice needed will be gladly given. Enjoy

Umm...super enthusiasm but might be best to leave a rest day if you are a beginner (you might not be, sorry). I ran ~20K miles between 2002 and 2014 but haven’t run for 2 and a half years. After my walk/run yesterday, my legs feel tired and I know from bitter experience that this is when injuries happen. Better to be 10% undertrained than 10% overtrained.

Apologies if this isn’t welcome advice, but I felt I had to say something for the benefit of everyone hopefully.

Again, really good to hear the enthusiasm and best wishes from Twat...

"got my first run done today, just under 2 miles of walking and jogging... "

Top running! That’s fantastic.

I wanted to write something funny about narwhals having fins or flippers or something but I realised I don’t know what they’ve got. Going to google...

Well done!

"I did my first session today at work. I get an hour for lunch so decided to use the first half an hour to go for a fast walk.

Must remember spare socks tomorrow because it was very wet out "

That’s a great way of slotting it into the day. Stay dry!

"My first run is tonight. After a 12 hour shift. When I have another 12 hour shift tomorrow. What could possibly go wrong.

Nightmare! But, if you manage it, you can feel super-smug!

I did it. Was wet and windy. But I did it. A total of 3k."

Really well done. Hope work is ok tomorrow.

"I've done my 2nd day, which was day 1 again as I didn't do it right yesterday, took my instructions from the app walked and ran when instructed it totalled 6 mins running, which for me was really a slow jog "

Mine is a very slow jog too. My son said “I can walk faster than you’re running”. Little sod.

That’s lovely. Thank you!

According to my Samsung Health app I've already walked for 25 mins and done 2442 steps so far today... easy to hit my 60 mins and 6000 steps daily target at this rate

Day two completed

Worked out a couple of things-

A) running when it's dark is better for me, as less people will see me/recognise me. As I'm sure I run like Phoebe from Friends

B) need to dig out my head torch. This morning I found a puddle same size as the one Dawn French found in the Vicar of Dibley, tad embarrasing!!!

I do apologise, that made me laugh out loud, and reminded me of several times when I have done the same thing...up to my chest on one occasion!

Run 2 done. Which felt so much harder than run 1. 2.5km done with 1km warm down.

Quite impressed with myself though, according to the health app on my phone I averaged over 17,000 steps daily dog walking over the Christmas holiday.

Ha ha ha ha - I love that episode of Friends! And that Vicar of Dibley bit. Running in the pitch black is a great idea. And you can freak yourself out thinking about murderers and you'll run faster!

Week one run two done!!!!!

For the first one-minute I was feeling very fit and pleased with myself. Needless to say, that didn’t last...

About halfway through, the App said “You can stop running...” oh thank god “... in ten seconds”. Noooooooooo!

By the end my “brisk walk” was.... well... I imagine mortally wounded animals are more sprightly.

But... I did it ... I did it... I did it...!!!!!

(In five hours I’m going to my first martial arts class... they’re gonna eat me alive...)

I often run half marathons and 10k runs. Get a decent pair of trainers and hit the streets and youre sorted

"I'm going to start off the excuses early; #newyearnewme always starts on the 2nd Jan

I'm keeping my eye on you to check you start tomorrow!"

I forget to post here yesterday

3km on the treadmill yesterday, and 4km today. Just over 32 mins for the latter.

Yes I know the treadmill isn't the best method, didn't fancy getting stranded a couple of miles from my house!

Have to say, there is some excellent posts for this thread. Thanks for starting it Op x

For me it's all down to lack of motivation and threads like this is a brilliant reason to get up and do something

I do have a question though, I'm rubbish with technical things and just wondered how people are measuring their distance? From the Couch to 5k app I can't see an option for this, are people using two apps or another device??

It's been argued that the treadmill does "half the work for you". Not sure exactly myself.

Most couch to 5k apps should measure the distance. If not you can run another along side it like ‘Strava’ or ‘Map my run’

I’m using Strava alongside the BBC 5k app and it works fine
