Wanna get fit with me in the new year? Announcing the Fab Crap Runners’ Club!
Jump to: Newest in thread
Welcome to the Fab Crap Runners’ Club!
Starting in January we’re going to do the “Couch to 5k” running programme which is designed to get complete non-runners jogging five kilometres in nine weeks. It was developed for people who don’t do any regular exercise at all (like me).
WHAT EXACTLY DO I HAVE TO DO?
You download a free Couch to 5k app (I’m going to use “Get Running” from the App Store), and do what it says. There are three 30-minute sessions each week The first week is walking interspersed with eight one-minute jogs.
HOW WILL THE FAB CRAP RUNNERS’ CLUB WORK?
Adam1971 (who has been roped in because he admitted getting a fancy Apple Watch for Christmas) and I will started a thread each of the nine weeks (beginning on 1st Jan) and we’ll all do our runs, and post our progress, our disasters, our embarrassing moments and a load of encouragement. You can do that week’s runs whenever suits you. And if you miss one or struggle we’ll all take the piss... I mean offer supportive words... until you’re back on track.
BUT I’M TOO CRAP FOR THE CRAP RUNNERS’ CLUB...
I cannot emphasise strongly enough how crap you can be to be to join this club.
This club is for everyone crap and it’s perfect for you if...
- you’re unfit
- you’re not the least bit sure you can jog for one minute without stopping
- you were always picked last at PE
- you’re overweight
- you hate exercise
- you don’t own any fancy fitness gear
- you’re certain you’ll never, ever be able to run 5km
So please post here if you think you’d like to join in! This is your first step to getting fitter.

I run 10 miles 3 times a week and I joined a running club a year ago. May last year I could jog for my life! Last October I done a half marathon , April doing a full marathon ! I think this tread is a brilliant idea ! Because running really helps you to get fit , make friends and mental health . You can do it xx |

That’s amazing! Wow. That seems like Mount Everest to me!
Thanks for the encouragement. Much appreciated. |

I've thought about doing this loads of times, but I've put in so much weight again perhaps it's time...
Cross country at school was horrendous, it sounds really stupid but we weren't taught about breathing when running, just told to go and run 3 miles, I always struggled for the entire 5 years and thought I was just totally unfit.
A few years back during a brief spell of being slim I started again with Fred's help with the breathing and I ran a mile straight off no problem. I never did more than a mile as I got a bit bored running round a field but always managed a mile in 8 minutes.

I remember the horror of cross-country. Just being crap at it from start to finish. I wonder if they do it differently these days. |

In the preparation for this, now is a good time to say how unfit I am. I’ve always been a bit podgy and getting older probably isn’t going to help things, but now is an excellent time to change that.
Spend the next few days getting a running playlist together and make sure you’ve got trainers that fit. As far as equipment goes, that’s it.
We can do this together, and think of the benefits of increased stamina for your sex life - you can either keep going for longer, or like me you can keep pleading for longer and wear her down more effectively |

Accepted wisdom is to walk/run in varying proportions when you start or restart running...there are some really good beginners’ programmes on websites like “Fetcheveryone” if fabbers want to do some research... |

I hate Cross Country with a passion.... Can't run on mud that well lol but road running is great, you see so much more of where you live. I went from hating running a few years ago to running the London marathon this year. |

I tried this app a while back, I lasted a few days my knees couldn't take it. Walking uphill can burn as many calories as running on the flat so I'll stick to that.
Good luck on your running journey though! I wish I could have done it. |

"Im older and damaged my knee in 2012/3. Had an op.
Couldn't run if you paid me. Can I walk ?
Do you have insurance for if I pop my clogs.?
Am I supposed to undergo a medical first ? "
Yes. I’ve heard people say they walk slowly in the “walk” bits and briskly in the “run” bits.
No insurance and not the least bit qualified to advise but, if you pass out while attempting it, we can all give you the kiss of life. |

I think this is a fantastic idea as you can all get motivation and encouragement from each other and I've heard the App does work very well too though I think I'm a little over qualified to join you all myself but I wish you all the very best and I'll certainly keep an eye on everyone's progress and will provide encouragement and advice if I can help anyone out
Good luck ladies and gents |

So one of the other things that is “received wisdom” in running circles is “do something, not nothing” so even a 20-30 minute walk each day at the start is a good thing...then gradually introduce short jogs...
Are we officially starting 1 Jan (hangovers permitting) Mrs Trellis? |

The Couch to 5k apps get you to do three sessions per week and they tell you when to walk and when to run, building up over the weeks.
So I’ll post a Week One thread on 1st Jan, and everyone can do their three week-one runs whenever it suits them during that week, then tell us how it went on the thread.

I think you were built to run or not. I'm not. I joined a running club, went for 4 weeks and managed to keep up but the pain from the shin splints was enough for me to say not on your nellie!!
So I've recently joined a gym.
Good luck everyone |

Joined the couch to 5k in September but had to stop 7 weeks in due to an eye infection.
Starting again in January - along with a general fitness, exercise and diet approach!

"I'm following a couch to marathon plan. Apparently by the end of June I'll be able to complete a marathon.
See how it goes. I need to be marathon fit by May 2019.
Wow!!! Which marathon? "
I won't be running an actual marathon. Can't think of anything more boring. But my 2019 goal is to run Oblivion which is as many 12k laps of a 122 obstacle course as possible in 8.5 hours. I'm aiming for 3 laps, which is just under marathon distance. |

Two things from a crap runner...
Go to a running shop and get yourself filmed running on a treadmill.
This will tell you what type of trainers you need, it can save you a lot of pain/injuries later.
Secondly, a lot of it is in your head, you can run further than you think...
Good luck, I may join you when I have finished the Stollen, Toblerone, stilton and beer... |

If I go to a running shop is that going to be expensive for trainers? I’m a little scared now.
I just went for a walk for 45 minutes and it was fine, although for motivation I took a 70 year old relative with me; no matter how unfit I am they always looked worse.
I’m here to tell you I survived and am looking forward to doing it again next week without the limping old person |

If you don’t buy suitable trainers, you may be that limping old person...but you can often get deals on last year’s models online once you know what sort of trainers suit you. |

If you are in Bedford there is a little independent one in Hitchin, Well Run sports, it's owned by a runner and is very good. They'll do a free gait analysis if you buy trainers from them buy trainers will be near enough full RRP. Or you have a sweatshop in Milton Keynes which is decent enough. |

3 things I learnt from running
1. Get a base layer... nike combat pro, no rubs
2. Good socks... double layer
3. You don't need a gait analysis. Nike lunar moulds itself to your gait and means you don't spend a fortune... you're running 5k also so perspective is important |

Walking is a good start though...and even easier to fit into your day. Could be walking to and from work (like a previous poster might do), a lunchtime stroll or split into 2 or 3 shorter walks during the day. It’s just about doing something (extra) rather than nothing x. |

Hi everyone
Tomorrow I’ll post a list of all those in the Fab Crap Runners’ Club - no backing out now.
Remember, you need to:
(1) download one of the free Couch to 5k running apps (I’ll be using Get Running from the App Store)
(2) in the week beginning 1st Jan, yiu follow the app’s instructions for week one. You can run on whichever days you like.
(3) post on the Crap Runners’ Club Week One thread, which I’ll create on 1st, to tell us how you got on.
Remember, we’re here because we ALL expect to be crap at this. If you find it hard - that’s fine. If you try and don’t manage it, don’t quit. You can still feel like a smug git because you’ll be out there doing something rather than vegetating on the couch.
X |

There is a handy free site called running a head dot com.
You can log all your runs, giving you a handy record, it tells you when you need to buy new trainers.
It's best feature is the map, using google you can plan routes accurately. |
