Nothing wrong with Granny's stockings hanging on our fireplace but having every inch of the exterior of the house covered with flashing lights is a bit over the top |

"Commercialism ..Christmas has lost it's meaning ..so many naff things now that kids want and they cost a fortune "
This is my biggest complaint. Some parents buy such huge gifts that other children feel embarrassed by what they get given when they go back to school. It should be about the giving and knowing the person well enough to buy them a great present that does not cost a lot. I give my two boys as much of my time as I can over Christmas. That is the present that money can't buy. |

Have you noticed that in the USA they say 'Happy holidays' instead of 'Happy Christmas'?
We are bombarded with advice on how to have 'the perfect Christmas', which often involves lots of money and stress.
Children seem to be whipped into a frenzy, with expectations greater than their parent's budgets.
That there are still people releying on food banks, who are homeless, or who are elderly and alone. People for whom Christmas is a time of distress.
I'm really not trying to ruin Christmas, but I do wonder if we have lost sight of what is really important, in the face of all that is vulgar, tacky and shallow?
Big hugs to you all xx

festival is all about sharing the happiness with friends and family, we all should spend time with family and help and give some gift to homeless kids or some needy person...by that way kids will see who lucky they are and will understand the value of money.... |

I don't do 'commercial'
My children all get 1 main present, and it's something they really want, a couple of little stocking filler presents.
We shop in the post Xmas sales, and any money they get, half goes in the bank.
My middle son always gives some of his money to a local charity.
Our cards to each other are all homemade, even if it's just A4 paper folded in half & a scribbled picture.
I hate all the social media posts 'look at what's under our tree' it's almost become a competition on FB who's got the biggest, best, brightest.
Too many people in the world with nothing. |

This.
I grew up in quite a poor household and so was never given much for Christmas. But both my parents(who were separated by now) explained to me why that was. Even during the rest of the year, they never really kept much from me and my sister's and that helped us understand and appreciate what we were given more. |

Theres a tv advert at moment for one of the big sports/leisure wear companies with trendy street dancing and music to boot...just imagine what the baby Jesus would look like dressed in latest trainers, hoodie and puffer jacket rather than recieving gold frankincense and myrrh |

That's because we are conscious that some people will be celebrating Hanukkah at the same time. Covering all the bases you see
Lots say Merry Christmas though |

Blue lights are a quandary for me. They look awesome shining on thick snow and I've had them since I was a kid.
But now they are de riguer on council estates I've stopped using them
Christmas jumpers are harmless fun yet heavily promoted buy the big retailers as if they are a proper tradition.
Getting shitfaced is something I don't understand and it doesn't seem traditional in the traditional sense |
