New (for me) car - need help

First off I hate car shopping, but I'm in desperate need of a new car, and my budget is small. Is there anyone that can please offer advice/opinion on a VW? I've talked with friends and family and I'm more torn than ever. The car I've looked at has 183k on the clock, its a really nice car but the mileage is really concerning me. Any thoughts? I've had really bad luck with cars this month and want to get something reliable.

mileage means nothing without some background info... could be all motorway miles, regular service etc so well maintained
If you’re looking at VW what about seat or Skoda.. similar models, same group and generally more for your money |

To old as said above with them miles and year it's almost 18 years old remember there's going to be bill coming and vw although good are expensive for parts. |

Thanks all, I've had a few friends that are VW fanatics telling me it was a great buy, but I'm buying because I'm in dire need of a car and don't want to make the wrong decision. |

Save yourself a lot of hassle and get a Honda.
Super reliable and built solid.
My old civic took serious stuctural abuse for three years and never once let me down. The dealer even bought it off me after I took everything out!
Except the time I didn’t tighten the battery terminals back up properly.....then it let me down  |

Personally, I think mileage is a little high for the age but am 15k per year it's not THAT bad. If it's got Full Service History, then it sounds a reasonable buy.
Although I think there are better cars available for that money.

Properly maintained as it was bought from VW with a service plan. Fine for the mileage, had diesels for a long time. DPF was buggered after less than 40k miles because of a dodgy valve. Broke down twice & kept running in safe mode. VW were shit & palmed me off as it didn’t start causing an issue til warranty ran out. AA & Independent VW specialist both told me the same thing - faulty valve on DPF & that it was quite common on that particular mark of polo. Also had a letter from VW saying mine was one of the cars affected by the botched emissions issue but had got rid by the time they were opening the window for it to be fixed. |

Needs to seat 5 comfortably, no dogs. I do around 200 miles a week but mostly motorway |

You're right about the mileage. I got an ex fleet VW Transporter with 130k on the clock, full service history and mainly motorway mileage. Sold it with 270k and it never missed a beat. |

Thanks for all your input, the VW; whilst I acknowledge many of them do perfectly well and get round the clock 2-3 times it's not for me.
I've got a couple more options to look at so hopefully be back on the road soon enough with something newer and a lot fewer miles.

Whatever you choose look for chasis corrosion. No matter how good the car/parts are it's an instant mot fail and it'll usually cost more than the car is worth to put right, that's if you can find a mechanic that'll touch it. 130000m+ Is to high for any used car, constant new parts. Good luck OP |

Looking at Parkers it seems the valuation is probably about right, I've decided against it.
Fred wants to buy one on ebay, I want to buy from a garage so I feel I have a degree of come back should we have any problems. |

Usually we replace every two years, I'll be honest and we usually go for older cars, and we have been really lucky so far other than the latest one that lasted 10 days, but we only bought that hoping it would last a couple of months. |

Whatever you buy try and pay the deposit by credit card. It doesn't matter how little you pay by credit card Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act means in the event of you having a problem the credit card company is liable for the full purchase amount just the same as car dealer. |

Modern car engines can do a lot of miles these days especially Diesels..but it's the other parts that will need changing on high miles cars like the alternators, the steering rack, ball joints, brakes,wheel bearings and so on because of the high mileage..it always make me laugh when I see a advert for a car that as high miles on it and they say " its nothing for these engines"..yeah but its a lot for the rest of the car though.. |

nooooooo ! stay away from older fords especialy diesels notirious for injector failures and clutch problems .if you go for ANY diesel over 100k mikes ask about the clutch as replacing them is £500+ due to dmf .if you are on the AA/RAC ask about them inspecting ant potential purchace .

Go for a Ford! Seriously - cheap to repair and really reliable. My last one (Ford Focus) I had about 10 years sold it on and it’s still going strong. Have a look around when your out and about and just see how many older models there are out there and it gives you a idea of how well they last. There are 5 Ford focuses on my street alone all from 2005 and earlier they really are reliable- I miss mine. |

How I tend to look for cars is to set my max price, age and mileage on Autotrader and then see what's available that suits my needs.
In my local area at the minute there are several 2007/2008 Astras, Focuses, loads of Fiat Puntos, and a smattering of other smaller cars. All between £1000 and £1500 with less than 70k.

How long is each individual journey. If you are driving a diesel and it's mostly around town on short stop start journeys then you will have problems especially if it has a dpf as they need to get up to temperature and then go through a clean cycle every so often. If this does not happen then you will spend a lot of time at dealers having them force a regen. I do 25-30 miles each way in my Seat Ibiza and it's perfect for the journey. Consider a Seat or Skoda as you get more for you money. The VW badge still carries a premium especially with the vans and Golf's. |

Not being picky but it’s 12 yrs old.
Mileage is high but as others have said...service history is everything.
Touran is a biggish car...do you need one so large? |

I do motorway driving in the week around 30 mile round trip each day, then a bit of all sorts at the weekend. I've always held off from a VW before as whilst reliable they hold their value well so always more than what we are willing to spend.
Heard nothing but good for Seat too, just too much choice! |

My last car had 165k on it and it was 16 years old, drove like a dream and cost me next to nothing over, as well as flying through MOT's the 3 years I had it. But, i knew the previous owners, knew its history and knew it had always been well looked after and serviced regularly. Only let me down when the clutch went. |

Diesels are going to get taxed to death as are older cars that don't hit Co2 targets, so you need to buy something that will have very good mpg.
Citroen C4 is a good looking cheap car - High tax, ok good mpg. There's one with 76k miles for £1500 on ayto trader.
Seat Ateca might be worth a look but car tax is £200 a year and will probably only increase.
There's a black 2005 Jaguar X-Type 2.0 S D for £1400 with 150k miles, great mpg - £140 tax. |
