A couple of months ago my dad had an abscess an necrotic tissue removed from his shoulder. The wound was so deep they had to leave it open to heal from the inside out.
All is going well.... He has had some manuka honey put in it to prevent the skin from healing and today he had done maggots put in there! He is so excited lol |

My mates mum had started her career as a district nurse in Birmingham and reckoned she'd seen a few cases of maggots getting into wounds because of squalor and them having cleaned it up quite nicely. |

"The vet put manuka honey on my dogs foot and charged me the Earth in the process.
It worked like a dream. "
It's £8 a jar. I buy the little sample sized pots for my porridge. |

I have to be honest, this is a real eye opener for me.
I've never heard of this procedure before, - is the honey used for its healing properties or for the maggot's dessert? |

Haha! It's got good antibacterial properties but I think he said they used it because it also stopped the skin from healing over. Said it stung a bit. |

I have seen this and it works however the patient wasn't keen of the sensation of the moving maggots .I was impressed with the wound and the size of the maggots when removed . |

Manuka honey is amazing for healing wounds. It does cost a fortune as it has to be sterile, the process of which is financially demanding and time consuming. Maggots however are excellent in clearing out wound debris and allowing it to heal from the inside out. I should think that if the wound is quite deep, there will also be some nerve damage, so your dad shouldn’t feel them. It’s an old fashioned approach to wound management, but I’m a big fan of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”. I hope your dad is feeling better and heals quickly xxx |

There have been cases where people injured in accidents and waiting a long time for rescue have been saved by maggots eating the infection in their wounds. |

Well I'm practically a Dr now as I've just had to change the dressing and get rid of a few escapees!
He had a second lot put in on Tuesday and they seem to have done a bit better than the first lot but he hasn't enjoyed the experience as you can feel them wriggling about |
