Smokers.

It’s not a thread about would you meet Smokers etc.

Just wanted to say to those that smoke or have loved ones that smoke. Please try and quit and habit.

I’ve seen what this has done to my mum.

She’s got chronic COPD. Which started as numerous chest infections to now where she is housebound and relies on oxygen 24/7.

All in a couple of years.

I’m sure if she could have turned back the clock or had a crystal ball. She would have never started.

( she did give up before she was diagnosed)

Please talk to those you love that smoke.

Mums currently back in hospital due to non eating and her words ‘ she doesn’t want to be here any more ‘

As a smoker we know all of this, we know what can happen, it's not nice you're right but it doesn't make me want to quit. Just like your mum knew it all too unfortunately.

If I could turn back time I wouldn't have started, but I can't. So until the day comes when I wake up and think I don't want to do this anymore, I will continue to smoke. I've tried pretty much every replacement and none have worked, it's a mind over matter thing and I need to just be able to throw them away without going back to them.

It's not the health side that makes me want to stop, because I knew all that when I started and because I know death takes everyone at some point, it's the money and time side of it.

Unfortunately our built in self preservation mechanism means we all think "it won't happen to me".

My dad gave up smoking 30 years before he died of a smoking related cancer!!!

The best we can hope for is that our children don't start smoking.

I smoke and my children hate it. I'm hoping they never take it up.

It's horrible and I'm finding it extremely difficult to give up at the moment. Just don't think my head is in the right place.

My mum cut down to 5 a day- 3 weeks later she died suddenly from a non smoking related disease.

My dad gave up smoking, a couple of years later he died instantly in a RTA

My step dad smokes tons and has numerous illnesses non related to his smoking. I wish he would stop but it’s his only pleasure he has left in life.

We can’t make people be who we want them to be and life is just shit, people get ill with or with out smoking. Plus if I urged him like you say to do he will just say good I can be with your Mum then.

I really am sorry to hear about your Mum though

Totally agree, I’m not ready to give up I enjoy a ciggy, all smokers know the health risks but do it anyway, one thing we are all sure of in life you are born to die and I intend on living my life how I want until that day comes!

I am really truly sorry to hear how your mum is suffering big hugs stay strong x

Sorry to hear about your mum, I truly sympathize!

My wife has C.O.P.D and has had it now for nearly ten years. We were both smokers. It still took a year for her to give up after being diagnosed. It took me almost five years. We both expected that smoking would make us ill one day and had tried several times to quit. Some people find it so much more addictive than others.

My wife's C.O.P.D. was caused by chicken pox getting into her lungs. She was only forty!

I know it's a strange logic but, her being so ill all the time made it harder for me to quit. She had a stroke a couple of years later and that made it even worse. I had a sick wife and two young children to care for and was running my own business. Smoking was my crutch!

I still don't feel like a total non smoker as when things get tough I vape but I haven't touched a cigarette for five years now.

I know people have to do things when the time is right for them and for some, the Idea of giving up is as scary as the health issues that will happen further on in life.

If you can give up, you wont regret it. I appreciate it has to be when the time is right though!

My dad died of lung cancer last year, it was very hard to watch someone who had always been a big strong bloke and who wasn't that old go rapidly downhill over the 9 months it took from diagnosis to death. When he was diagnosed he was absolutely devastated that he'd brought it on his family by being a smoker all his life and spent the last months of his life beating himself up over it, that was the only time I'd ever seen him cry and the only time we'd ever hugged as father and son since I was a toddler. I miss him every day as do all his friends and family, and our family has been changed forever for the worse. I used to smoke socially on nights out a lot but I've stopped that as a result.

Don't just think about the consequences for yourself but for the impact it would have on your friends and family if/when cancer rears its head, quit if you can and stop making excuses as to why you can't. My dad always said for years he couldn't quit or didn't want to, funny how he could suddenly stop the day he was diagnosed

OP I'm sending big hugs to you. Xx

I switched to vaping a year and a half ago with not a single fag had since then, I found it easy but many don't, and don't persevere with it, vaping is different to smoking and you have to get used to it. I have no intention to give up vaping, it's probably not risk free but at least it's better.

My mum has COPD, she quit smoking 40 years ago, hers is caused by household cleaning products being a cleaner all her life.

Something will get us all wether it's of our own doing or not. x

Hi op

Sorry to hear this,my dad had severe copd and sadly passed with lung cancer 3 and a half years ago.

I used to smoke ,i quit almost 12 years ago and glad i did ,watching him suffer was horrific.

Smoking is an addiction like anything else and some will succumb to this awful disease, whilst others won't.

Jack smokes,I dont nag him to stop, just hope one day he will be able to.

Bih hugs

When I smoked everyone who gave me advice i agreed with that they where saying.

Ultimately it's down to the smoker to want to quit. When I did after 1 week I felt like a new man.

Forget the death side of it and think of the agony you could be in before death brings relief. COPD is an awfully traumatic way to die - you will NOT be symptom free, you WILL suffer.

Ignore them V. The rest of us know you're trying to stop others going through what you and your mum are.

Nursing this condition is upsetting. Most diseases you can ease symptoms such as pain. Breathing difficulties are not eased in the same way.

Thank you. It’s an awful condition. Being housebound and being fed up oxygen though a tube 24/7.

Knowing that the next infection could be your end.

Like I said, I'm aware of all the health issues that can arise, it's not like I'm blind and death and can't see the advertising, I choose to ignore it. Like many have stated on here, people they knew quit and still ended up with the health issues, so that doesn't convince me to quit, why quit if there's a chance I'll get it any way. That's why the health side isn't an influence for me.

Anyway to make ppl think about what they are doing to their bodies is helping ppl not preaching !

Have lost ppl to smoking too and it's not the best way to suffer

See it more as thought provoking !

My mum smokes and I hate it with a passion,us 4 kid's never have it's pointless going on at her it falls on deaf ears. Actually she's the only one in the family to smoke,I so wished she didn't,for her own health mainly but mine as well when I stay there.

I only go for the night, but come away stinking of smoke. She doesn't smoke next to me,but because she lives in a flat it finds me

Over the roundabout and then turn right.

So sorry OP to read this. We all know the risks but it's still awful when it happens.

I (Mr) gave up smoking 7 years ago and have never looked back, but I am aware that I could still have problems because of my previous habit. Mrs has never smoked.

The reality is people still have a choice, and as long as a choice is available some will choose to smoke despite the risks.

Perhaps one day it will be illegal, but until then it will continue.

Sorry to hear about your mum and it's good advice.

However in this game of life we are all playing, something is going to get us all at some point. If it's not the effects of smoking, it'll be something else.

Isn't it funny though that very few things you enjoy are good for you.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but.... Try living from 70-90 years of age, for the vast majority of people it will be twentyish years of illness pain and suffering, if your lucky you'll get put in a home where your lay helpless pissing and shitting the bed while having no idea about what goes on in the world while some teenage twonk force feeds you drugs that sustain your existence!...
