Very self indulgent music - none of the band recognised as the best in their instrument

An overrated band

Any amount of fantastic bands have contained people not recognised as the best at their instrument. The Beatles, Rolling Stones and many others. It's what happens when you blend them and as a group Floyd have somthing special.

And many, many people rate Dave Gilmour as one of the best guitarists of his generation.

Gilmour, to me, is the best of his generation, bar none.

Van halen perhaps Clapton never - to play the blues really is the art of a guitar player and Gilmour has never managed that

My favourite rock guitar player - the late Gary Moore brilliant rock & blues player

No one can be rated the best, it's just personal favourites. That's why top guitarist ratings always slightly differ. You happen to have yours and Clapton, Hendrix, Schenker, Van halen, Moore and Gilmour all have theirs. They might include one another and I would bet at least one of them rates Dave Gilmour as a gifted and influential guitarist.

So enjoy your Floyd night OP and enjoy your favourite quitarists everyone else.

not really a big fan of pink floyd but got dragged along to the O2 in May to see The Wall and can honestly say it was one of the best shows i have seen in me life

Never heard a roar as loud as when David Gilmore played a guitar solo to comfortably numb

Its not the guitarist its the music they play

Sorry but have to say on this occasion I disagree.

Think Dave Gilmour is one of the best (but then I am probably bias as a huge Pink Floyd fan)

Also personally rate Slash and Gary Moore.

This thread sounds like a "my Dad's bigger than your Dad"

There's no doubt in my mind that Pink Floyd are up there with the best. They are quite unique. Who plays the same stuff that they do? I can't see who anyone can compare them to.

I can remember the first time I listened to Dark Side Of The Moon. It was in a darkened room, lying on a couch with my then girlfriend. We were lying eyes closed, sipping Strongbow, lol and losing ourselves in the music. We didn't need any drugs to feel a high.

The memory of that moment will always be with me.

Yes, they are great musicians, undoubtably
