I'm currently on sick leave at the moment and getting sick pay of £89 a week. Sadly my company doesn't pay full sick pay. Compared to what I usually pick up a month to this really is terrifying me. It's so sad that the reason I'm off work is through stress is now worse because of sick pay. |

"I'm lucky my hubby brings a decent wage in but it's the ones out there that don't that really pisses me off. How do they expect people to survive? "
Handouts. Food that's going out of date. The choice of eating or heating.
Welcome to my world. |

There are insurance policies available that will payout a certainpercentage of your monthly income (typically 75% for a max of 12 months) if you are unable to work. Topped up with SSP and a person could get by I expect. They do tend to exclude being off work due to stress and depression though, unfortunately.
I imagine they are also pretty awkward about the exact definition of 'unable to work'. |

Feel your pain OP, H is off with her back and we've now decided she won't be going back so Docs have signed her off for a month & only SSP, but caring isn't highly paid so we van muddle by. Not sure what she'll be doing in the new year but probably only part time.
So now instead of doing kid run & a bit of bike work I spent yesterday buying upgraded tools & this morning punting business cards around the area.
Not the time of year to be trying to get more bike work though so we'll be off into the hedgerows collecting free firewood this week!
Hope you get back to full fitness soon

I've offered to work from home as I'm field based but they've said no because I'm off with stress and depression. Even got told off for answering emails while I was off. I know they are doing it to protect themselves but I'm bored.
I'm missing my everyday routine! |

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest |
I've often seen patients with this dilemma and have seen their desperation in wanting to get back to work as they cannot make ends meet with this amount of weekly pay.
It was a bit of a shock to me, as in continental europe things work differently. I lived in Portugal for a number of years and over there, Social security would pay you roughly 65-70% of your net salary while on sick leave...a clear difference.
Hope you get well soon Kitty xx |

I have a friend that volunteers in one and they can't keep up. Not enough food is being donated to the banks. |

I think they are also massively expensive unless there are so many exclusions they're not worth having.
I can only imagine how the situation is adding to your concerns OP, hope you're getting some support to help you get on top of things xx |

I cut my chemotherapy short because I was running out of paid sick leave. I live on my own and have no one to help with my mortgage or bills. As it was my heating bills went through the roof due to side effects of chemo. I was petrified and even went into work early to try to bank some time in between treatments so that I could maybe go home a bit earlier on really bad days.
I wouldn’t have been able to survive on ssp and think it’s disgusting that people who’ve never worked a day in their life get paid more by the state than people that have worked and want to work but are genuinely too ill. |

My dear mum used to work in a bakery and one night when she worked late she was told to throw all the bread, cakes etc and put washing up liquid all over them. She said why? To stop the homeless going in the bins! She left after that.
My friend does, there are bins in the local Tesco but not being filled at a fast rate.

Unfortunately they are right. Off sick is off. Do not answer anything to do with work. Use the time to get your head in the right space. Relax. Go on walks. Fuck like rabbit. Then go back refreshed. |

You took the words right out of my mouth. I've worked all my life and paid all my taxes and NI and I get this. I'd get more on Job seekers allowance. I also can't get any top up on my SSP because I've earned too much in the past, which means I've paid more bloody tax. |

OP does your organisation have a Healthy Working Lives or Getting back to work strategy? When I was off with work related stress they worked with me to devise a plan to get me back to work which benefitted both parties. Sorry to hear of your predicament particularly at this time of year. Hope you feel better soon x |

Sorry to hear this Kitty. As has been said off work is off work. The last thing you need is to be thinking about work when you need to be thinking about getting better.
Here’s hoping you get well soon. x |
