Ok I’m no gym freak as you can see from my pics but I’m looking to get back into the swing of things.

Does anybody use any supplements to get them going ?

There is a thing on Facebook about a coffee that you have and it’s full of goodness and supposed to help you along the way.

The girl who I won’t name is very well known in the gym world so to speak and she promotes it.

Anyone have any experience with this?

All I can say is just because this person promotes it doesn't mean she uses it or that it works! Remember that she's being paid to say it!!!

You are better off going to the gym and discussing nutrition with them. Any good gym should have staff that are trained in nutrition and will be able to advise you correctly and not because they are being paid to say it or trying to make a name for themselves.

Supplementation is just that, a supplement and in reality it's nearly all bollocks.

Be weary of gyms that sell supplements and what they say. They may well be paid bonuses to sell them.

Regarding the coffee, do you mean bulletproof coffee? That's just dogged with coconut oil. Nothing magic, just caffeine and fat. No real evidence to suggest it's anything else. And what a lot don't understand is that it may be a 3-400 calorie black coffee. Tastes like shit too.

Best thing I can ever suggest is to look at how you fuel yourself. The old adage that you are what you eat is entirely true!

Yeah like for two weeks the guy in the gym was selling me this lovely tasting post workout shake, thought fuck this banana shit is nicer than a yazoo.

One particular morning I look at the nutritional value and seem 29 grams of sugar in it!!!

I tend to go with a sugar free energy drink or a ‘rocket fuel’ coffee with guarana (only from Tesco, nothing exciting).

If you want a special pre-workout there are some decent ones out there, have heard good things about the grenade type ones.

IMO if something needs someone famous promoting it is likely just a gimmick.

Oh I've seen that stuff, just coffee with a couple of added extras. Chromium supplementation has been proven to have some decent effects (if your deficient in it) but I'd still be weary of claims.

The thing is that these things are entirely faddy and have pretty much all been used before at some point. If you've got the money to spend then give it a whirl but even if you had all the supplements in the world and used them perfectly, you're probably looking at a 2-3% overall increase in any positive effects over not using them. (Unless you're deficient in something then it could be drastically better)

Regarding the original question.

Pre workouts all tend to follow the same pattern.

A stimulant - following the banning of 1-3dim these are now all primerily caffeine based

A Vaso-diolator - this opens up the capillaries and helps give you a 'pump' however, a 'pump' does nothing to promote muscle growth.

Occasionally they add in some nootropics - these effect the brain and can improve concentration making you more focussed.

To be honest, a 200mg caffeine pill (available for pennies online) does the trick just fine for most.

all I am saying is that it is far easier to have a shake after a workout with full nutrients rather than immediately fry up a steak, we can all pick things to bits criticise and I have no concern either way, I eat good foods, healthy breakfasts, lots of fruit and I have shakes also as they are quick & simple when time is short

All i can say is that i get observably stronger when i cycle on creatine than off it. Having used it on and off for 17 years now, i feel confident im past any placebo effect.

The only supplement I use is whey protein, everything else is just food, usually tuna or chicken salad wraps for lunch with a couple of portions of fruit. I think I look ok with what I'm doing. I know a lot of people who do all that creatine, fat burners, steroids etc but it's not for me at all. I want to actually be fit and healthy, not just look it from the outside

Not all sugar, is bad sugar!

Your body can metabolise & convert fruit sugars to energy quicker therfore hasn't got time to be stored as fat.

The post workout shakes I use are high in sugar, but good sugars

seems some are hell bent on knocking supplements and others support.

I have well balanced meals, plenty of fruit, some selected vitamins, especially Calcium/Vitamin D (im from Scotland) and for those who don't understand the need of Vit D in Scotland, we might as well end the conversation now.

You eat to fuel your body and to allow it to grow, its up to each individual do select what they wish to eat, whether it be healthy meals, supplements, fruit, crisps, MacDonald's or other junk foods, we all have a choice

I used to use craze, the old one a few years ago now, until it was banned, haven’t found anything to match it and most pre-workouts I’ve tried since just give me a massive come down so I don’t bother anymore.

I occasionally use a grenade pre-workout drink (tastes horrible IMHO), but if you have a lot of caffeine in your diet then they aren't always effective. Best to stick to a decent foods instead.

Espresso as pre workout and like many have said before - work out what your aims are before you start filling your basket with wonder supplements, cavemen/women never had them and they were beasts!that said, we do use some to help get our goals - lean muscle. Keep it up xxx

I'd be interested in anything that people find reduced DOMS, having a bit of trouble with this at the moment, due to some metabolic issues I think.

Didn't know about the caffeine - I often have a coffee on my way to class, I'll make sure it's not decaf now lol, and I'm going to try and have some whey after, and get myself back on l-carnitine which I know helps my muscle function generally.

Nothing really supplementation wise but yoga/Pilates is very good at helping.

I only normally get it if I haven't been for a while, but at the moment it is every week after a fairly full-on squat/lunge type class, not sure what's changed.

Nothing really supplementation wise but yoga/Pilates is very good at helping.

Some people will say protein or bcaa's but it makes sod all difference. Doms get less the more frequently and periodically you train. Just keep going is the best way to deal with them.

Unfortunately it's the other way round - getting them more frequently for some reason. Thanks anyway.

Epsom salt baths have some good anecdotal effects "

As above, Epsom salt baths do help, I have one after a comp or I struggle to walk.

I also find foam rolling helps, before and after your workout and on rest days.

Just as a word of advice, you don’t actually need to cycle creatine, you don’t need to load either.. 5g every day once a day and you will notice no added Benefit from loading, however you will notice you need to resupply much sooner!

Obviously your going to feel stronger and much more powerful with more creatine in your body..

As for the protein shakes, its a cheap way to get your protein! However you need to understand that your body will not utilise all of the protein from a shake so calculate for 30% not being broken down..

You will get much greater results from increasing your BCAAs over increasing your protein intake (unless obviously your protein intake is too low to start with) no point having more and more protein if your body is unable to utilise it quickly enough..

Can't speak for coffee, though I did work with a guy who swore by a "prison pre-workout" consisting mostly of coffee and

Personally I use 50 Cal by Grenade. Absolutely the most effective one I've tried so far

I find this to have way too much bata alanine, I itch constantly through out my workout, I also think it taste like shit and doesn’t break down enough so it’s like drinking sand! Also the come down is a bitch...

Anyone that’s serious about the gym should be mixing their own pre-workouts anyway.. no need to spend on brands of you have a basic understanding of the ingredients..

Coffee is an old fashioned Pre Workout...

Nothing wrong with it, but there’s other stuff on the market now...

At the moment I’m taking this as a Pre Workout:

1MR VORTEX (BPI)

FULL AS F**K (RICHIE PIANA)

CREA(TEN) (RICHIE PIANA)

Some Pre Workouts are just stimulant based

Some have Pump Matrix in, Nitric Oxide for stamina, creatine etc.

Important things to consider...

If you are looking to be stimulated before a workout... NEVER stick with the same pre workout... your body gets used to it... so always have another one in your gym bag a switch every couple of weeks... you’ll get a much better kick from something new, or something you’ve not had for a couple of weeks...

If it’s late... have half a scoop... sometimes stronger pre workouts have second kick that hits you after training (ABE APPLIED NUTRITION)

50g carbs and 50g of protein 1h pre and within 45min post workout!

A study showed 5% avg gains over 8 weeks without this method and 26% avg gains using this method! Imagine adding 25kg to your 1rm bench press in 8 weeks.. (that’s assuming your bench 1rm is 100kg)

Obviously true strength training is required to achieve such goals and no 3x10 and 60% 1rm like most people tend to do

Strong black coffee is always good. A lot of athletes or hardcore gym users , use this because it has no sugars etc in it. Buying a Lee work from any supplement store or online will help you get motivation and focus in the gym. They are safe to use aslong as you don't go over the top with servings . They can make you feel a little weird tho but that's normal

I go with my mood since you'll do a much better job of something you want to do than something you haven't written in paper.

This works if your only reason for going to the gym is so you can feel better about yourself and so you can tell your potential matches on fab that you go to the gym!

This isn’t the case for any body wanting to train to achieve maximum physical gain, due to the fact you end up over training your favoured muscles and under training your less favoured muscles.. not only do you ruin your own gains, but you create imbalances in your muscle groups and mess up your posture... let’s hope you grow out of this phase

I just took tips from there and adjusted it around myself, the main principles being progressive overload and failure sets between 10 - 12 reps on each body part. I saw a guy in the gym last week doing about 100 reps on the bench press with hardly any weight on, he was skinny as you can imagine and will stay that way if he doesn't up the weight!

A lot of people tend to do the same thing, however look up something called time under tention, very interesting view on how many reps you should do, how long each rep should last and your TUT.. too many people focus on moving as much weight as possible through 3x10 as quickly as possible! When it should be about moving as much weight as you can with the correct technique, control, TUT and if it makes a loud bang! Your doing it wrong

Those sorts of gains are only possible in people who are new to training or are still beginners.

Anybody with a decent strength level isn't going to see 25% increase on any lift in 8 weeks regardless of how you structure your pre/post workout nutrition.

Interesting advice

Now did you ask if , strength , power or muscle hypertrophy was the goal

I usually refrain from giving generic training advice on here as without knowing a lot of detail , the advice will not be applicable

Also we do not all respond the same way , most are at different stages in their training or nutrition life , and generic advice again could be just useless

One thing , maybe the key thing I teach is self awareness and understanding why methods CAN work and how to recognise how their body works in synergy

Wow you totally misread that. I've been going to the gym for 17 years now so I'm pretty comfortable with balancing workouts. I'm not talking about doing biceps five times a week because it's easier than legs, I'm just saying that some leg days you'll feel like doing lunges more than squats. Unless you are a competitive bodybuilder or strongman then it's not going to disadvantage you and makes things a lot more fun.

Get a programme developed and as your fitness improves, you could then consider pre-workout supplements. Picking a product in advance of activity and adjusting your lifestyle could be viewed as potentially having the wrong focus, wasting money, maybe pursuing a gimmick and being drawn to something promoting some magical powers.

Your exercise routine and nutrition are the core elements - and staff should be able to educate and support you upon these.
