Is the pill destroying society?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Female chimps do not selectively mate. Meaning that if there was a 'fab chimps' there would be as many females as males and the profile text would be the same for all "looking for a chimp".
Conversely, female humans are fussy so and so's that like men to jump through all sorts of hoops which are generally meant to indicate good genes and a willingness towards parental responsibility, at the median level.
However, studies have shown that the types of men that women find attractive change during ovulation. Broadly speaking women prefer more masculine looking men during ovulation and vice versa. However, since the pill is so common and prevents ovulation, it presents a risk that men will deliberately feminise themselves to get chicks. Furthermore, when the women stop taking the pill (usually at a critical point in the relationship) they might then look at their partner with fresh eyes and think 'how the fuck did i end up with this Justin Bieber wanna-be?'. This could of course lead to societal breakdown and the coming of the armageddon.

Does that mean you might be willing to try a chimp experiment and accept an offer from an interested male even if it is not what you looking for? All in the pursuit of science. If so drop me a PM. |

"What percentage of the female population who will at some point in the future conceive take the pill?
Quite a lot I'd imagine but i don't see the linkage to my point?"
The higher the percentage the higher the likelihood of societal breakdown and Armageddon.
I think if it did lead to societal breakdown in certain cultures it would lead to an increase in societies where contraception was used less. |

It could well lead to the end of macho alpha males, future society being populated by men who have a more nurturing, soft centred approach to life.
This will of course, lead to the dismantling of all nuclear weapons and to toilet lids being closed. Thus preventing Armageddon, prolonging humankinds survival and controlling the spread of disease. |

Ah sorry i see, i read it the wrong way first time. I think the pill gives women the equivalent of 'beer goggles' so i guess the question is whether they continue with the guy they are with or cut their losses and head to the forest to try and find a lumberjack. |

But the problem is more that the women won't fancy their mate once they stop taking the pill, so it's more likely to lead to divorce or serial monogamy than breeding out the alpha males. |

Seriously I think there are too many variables to give a definite answer. It's interesting to ponder on the way that a development that is initially hailed as a great breakthrough can possibly change the course of society in ways not dreamt of. |

This year my wife stopped taking the pill and the difference is incredible. There's no way i want her to go back on it again. I think i must have spent my entire 20's dating girls on the pill so i didn't really get a sense of how detrimental it can be. |

Possibly,if women are likely to divorce or separate just because they no longer feel attracted. That isn't necessarily true though. And if that does happen, and the newly re-liberated woman goes back on the pill then the whole cycle could start all over again with the 'Justin Biebers' (as you put it) again being the more successful guys.
All dependent on the idea of women being so fickle that they base such decisions on physical attraction. Again, that is not necessarily so. |

You say fickle but what's the alternative; chimps. Women are selective and none of the other characteristics they select on will favour beta males. |

Well at least they don't have a long list of demands...
The problem is that the alpha chimps accept the fact that the females are DTF and so they guard them from the chimps lower in the hierarchy. So whilst you think a chimp might be an easy alternative to sending 100 messages on here to get 1 reply, you could also end up with an alpha chimp sorting you out. They are strong fuckers too |

Although to be honest the estrogen in the water supply is feminising men... Hence the rapid rise in testicular cancer, male breast cancer, falling sperm count and those stupid tight legged baggy arsed jeans |

But women found you attractive (and presumably still do) despite being on the pill and despite you not being a feminized Justin Bieber wannabe.
So,it's proved that women on the pill do still fancy alpha males and are prepared to stick with them despite they leave the loo seat up.Society can go back to worrying about nuclear war, global warming and who Prince Harry is taking home to meet the in laws.

*Boring answer alert*
Whilst it's obviously plausible that hormone changes will affect who people are attracted to, given this is a single study of only 100 women I think it's a little early to panic. |

Interesting thread... But there's more to consider than just wanton use of the pill... What about all the synthetic female hormones which end up in our water supply through our pee? We're not all blessed with fresh Scottish water and the water treatment process doesn't completely eliminate the molecules.
Add to this the many many ways we are exposed to pseudo-estrogens (just think of plastic use in the food/drink industry)... So the male population will become more feminised and it'll impact fertility rates more than by just affecting attraction! |

Fascinating question. Unsure on the answer, but on a weirdly related note...
It's been proven that cesarean sections are having an adverse affect. Something to do with women's hip width no longer being a determining factor on child birth, and by extension, passing the hip width to the next generation.
Weird, but true. |

So because women are having more c sections...wide 'child bearing' hips will be less a factor when finding a partner?
And future generations will have narrower hips? |

Regarding the pill...
Maybe. It's seems like a reasonable conclusion to draw from the comments you've made, however...
I suspect that changing gender ideals and expectations since the early modern period up until the fin de siecle are as much to blame. Women have, historically speaking, had a rough time for the last few hundred years. The pill is, in my view, merely the latest iteration of controlling those dangerous women (insert sarcastic tone). The feminisation of men is an interesting thought though. Are men being feminised, or have they been historically massculinised to the point of being 1 dimensional?
Great topic. |

Sort of. Children/women that would have previously perished due to narrow hips no longer do, meaning that the c-section becomes ever more important, and thus the shape of women changes. What is considered attractive runs parallel to this, bit is not necessarily defined by it. |

Yeah but correlation and causation ate different things.
Using that logic, I could say that as 'take that' record sales decrease, birth rate are dropping, thus more 'take that' = more births. |

Just to contrast. Some people don't seem to fully grasp that female humans are selective breeders. Both in terms of women that claim to choose primarily on personality (yeah right) and 40 year old men who moan that nobody wants to shag them in their parents basement. |

It's not one or the other though. It makes sex less risky but also reduces their appetite for sex and changes their preferences for who they want sex with. Complicated beings they are... |

..well..i understand that...i gotta paint the walls..do it up a bit...
But to actually attempt to address the discussion , society has changed exponentially recently, in terms of social awareness and exposure for 'types' that in the past were somewhat shunned and victimised. I dont doubt that in 10 years time tastes will have changed again and the neanderthal will have his reign again.. |

Break into the zoo late at night.
You might want to bear in mind the chimps are massively strong compared to humans so,you may not have a choice in what happens in that cage.
..maybe im 'bi' chimp.. "

Just to contrast. Some people don't seem to fully grasp that female humans are selective breeders. Both in terms of women that claim to choose primarily on personality (yeah right) and 40 year old men who moan that nobody wants to shag them in their parents basement.
..well..i understand that...i gotta paint the walls..do it up a bit...
But to actually attempt to address the discussion , society has changed exponentially recently, in terms of social awareness and exposure for 'types' that in the past were somewhat shunned and victimised. I dont doubt that in 10 years time tastes will have changed again and the neanderthal will have his reign again.. "
I would argue that fundamentally most women still want a man with resources and most men still want a beautiful woman. There really aren't many billionaires with unattractive wives and there are many very unattractive wealthy men with very attractive wives, Harvey Weinstein being a prime example. |

It's not though. Inevitably some women will just mate with the beta male they find themselves with the way some men will have a morning romp even when the beer goggles wear off. |

Assuming that 'masculine' means strong - which I'm not sure it does.
Also assumes that physical strength is paramount, which again, it's not. |

"Female chimps do not selectively mate.
Discuss..."
I'd suggest that female humans are less selective than their socialized behaviour suggests.
Women being 'hard to get' or 'selective' has more to do with conditioning than nature.

Tosh ...... Many people pair off for fear of being alone or the boast of having a partner. I've seen women have countless men who I consider nothing more than fucking knuckle pavement scrapers. It's a man.
It makes sense that an intelligent woman who has her eyes on her own future , needs and wants will be selective. |

So historically women had much greater reason to be selective than now, i accept that. But that manifests itself in baises that are still very noticeable today (e.g. female preference for male height). I get what you are saying but i think thats a sub-set of people not at the average level. |

To address an issue that hasn’t been discussed, the pill or any form of contraception allows women more freedom to have sex without the risk of pregnancy. I have found it more liberating but still use condoms.
My libido hasn’t been affected by the coil. In fact if it wasn’t for other health issues I’d be playing more. I wonder about the age of the women surveyed as hormone levels do fluctuate with age.

I don't agree, I believe the pill is very important because it gives serious minded guys and girls the opportunity to plan and avoid getting trapped.
When it comes to guys being feminine this has been a problem for a long time because they feel that is the only way to get the girls and probably that is the way they were brought up.
Several times on the thread I have to literally tell guys not to throw insults and not to wear their emotions on their sleeves, a man should never be emotional and should always be a thinker, he must be able to see a problem before it happens and therefore have the ability to lead a family. If you disagree with someone engage them intellectually, in a civil manner , this is the masculine way.
I am happy that the ladies are pointing out they do not like this femine behaviour in guys, especially when they get into a serious relationship.
Great thread , thanks Op. |

The advent of the pill has moved sex from procreation to recreation. This has empowered women to make choices they previously may have been unwilling or unable to make.
Trying to find a scientific reason why a woman may prefer one type of man to another at any particular time due to hormones is neither here or there. The money spent on irrelevant issues like this would be better spent on curing cancer. |

Interesting topic and enjoyed reading it. My hubby looks like the stereotypical alpha male (but has very high intellect). He'd be fascinated by all this as he's often commented on how "feminine" men have generally become over the past 25 years or so. He also believes, for one reason or another it has almost become "fashionable" to be gay.
He thinks there are several reasons, not least the power of television (which would have you believe that gay people represent a far greater % of society than they actually do - watch any soap for such evidence!) and the vulnerability of people to marketing ploys - he often says "men/footballers using moisturiser!!" and observes how men managed without such cosmetics for tens of thousands of years.
He says it's got to the stage where he has to prove he's not a Neanderthal to any new people at work, for example, simply because he looks like an alpha male.
His view also is that feminine/gay men are getting promoted easier in the workplace.
By the way, please note we have no phobias at all (you'll appreciate that from profile) - these are the genuine observations of an intelligent alpha male. |

Do try and chill out a little. I just asked because I was interested. There's no need to drone on about ideology every time.
But anyway, thanks for the reference.
Whilst I agree this research shows that higher declared salary increases online dating success, I'm not sure it fully supports your claim of "fundamentally most women still want a man with resources and most men still want a beautiful woman".
Table 5.2 appears to show that looks are by far the most important factor for both genders.
(also, whilst my point on sample size of the research that started this topic may be a 'generic' one, it remains perfectly valid -
drawing conclusions on the fate of the human race based on a study of 100 is silly.) |

The study only goes as far as dating. It doesn't go on as far as mmarriage. If it did then you'd see that whilst the average women might date the 'good looking artist, guitar playing gary' eventually she'll dump him and marry 'steady steve the accountant'.

Well, it wasn't me that called it misogynistic.
I'd say it was just more of an unevidenced lazy stereotype.
Also if you have to imagine what the study would say it were different in order to try to prove your point, I'd suggest it's failing as evidence.

The quality of the authors speaks for themselves if you know who they are.
(also, whilst my point on sample size of the research that started this topic may be a 'generic' one, it remains perfectly valid -
drawing conclusions on the fate of the human race based on a study of 100 is silly.)
The study only goes as far as dating. It doesn't go on as far as mmarriage. If it did then you'd see that whilst the average women might date the 'good looking artist, guitar playing gary' eventually she'll dump him and marry 'steady steve the accountant'.
So you agree my original statement was not misogynistic?
Well, it wasn't me that called it misogynistic.
I'd say it was just more of an unevidenced lazy stereotype.
Also if you have to imagine what the study would say it were different in order to try to prove your point, I'd suggest it's failing as evidence.
You've just seen evidence and you can't explain all the billionaires who magically have gorgeous wives depsite looking like a pile of shit themselves.
As i mentioned, academia is incredibly biased so you can't always find a study to perfectly say what everyone outside the ivory towers knows to be self evident. "
I haven't seen evidence of your claim, as outlined in my prior post. The study says looks, not money, is most important for women.
And I don't deny that *some* women go for men based solely on their money. But your claim was that it is *most* women.

It's a factually accurate statement proved by multiple studies.
What are some of these studies?

Of course you don't actually have any counter evidence and you're happy to assume that someone like Harvey Weinstein just has a cracking great personality that compensates for his looks and explains why his wife is so much better looking than him. Ok. |

I already said that some women obviously go for men based on money, but that you hadn't shown it was most.
Keep wriggling, though.

Ok have a search for "never married adults: which of these factors would be very important for you in choosing a partner?" Sorry but had enough bans for posting links. Spolier alert, 78% of women said "a steady job". |

I think this thread is based on a lot of assumptions.
A lot of woman report increased sex drive or no change in sex drive when on these types of contraception, some women's type don't change or change due to other factors.
I don't see a lot of feminine men. In fact I see the opposite and I personally have seen a rise in the amount of "masculine" men. Just because someone looks masculine or feminine doesn't mean they are personality wise. Also being feminine or a little feminine as a man is not a bad thing. Or women being masculine - it just means that as a society gender contracts have changed and evolved.
Me personally I have been on the implant and for a while my sex drive was random. Sometimes really high or really low. It has evened itself back out to normal for me. I find some feminine looking men attractive but I did before I went on it. But my preference has always been more masculine looking men with a few exceptions.
Just my observation.

A bit better I guess, in that of this survey sample (of how many it doesn't seem to say), more women prioritize a 'steady job' in their partner than do men.
Note 'steady', not 'well paid'. This isn't showing that women crave billionaires.
But given that attractiveness and many other factors aren't listed, this is hardly conclusive proof that women value 'resources' above all else. Just that they do so more than men out of a very limited sample of five factors.
Which, given that women are more likely to be expected to be the stay at home partners, is not so amazing or telling about the fundamental nature of women.
Anyway, as fun as this is, I'll leave it here with my general point, which is that human interactions are messy and complicated and full of all kinds of factors, and trying to reduce things down to statements of 'men like X and women like Y' is futile and unproductive, outside of providing comfort to people who prefer the world wrapped up in simple and traditional stereotypes.

I'd like evidence that there is a problem, before thinking about a supposition that may be mere fantasy.
Has the pill meant men jumping through more or fewer hoops - or even the same? Or are these fab hoops? |

If the popularity of Justin Bieber doesn't convince you that there's a problem then there's nothing more i can say to persuade you. |

He was asked by a journalist what he would be if he wasn't a premier league footballed. "A virgin" he replied. |
