If you don't like cricket, that's ok, most people share your view.
It can be pretty shit, let's face it.
Now the disclaimer is out the way, please share your thoughts on the up coming series and one day, T20s.
The Ladies drew their series but 'Strayer keep the urn. (Even though it's housed at Lords).
The first test starts in 4 hours, I'd be gobsmacked if England can get a win this one. Australia don't lose at the Gabba.
I hope England win The Ashes but I can't see how at the moment, thankfully Australia don't seem to be that strong but I think they have enough to beat us and win the series and then beat us in the other two formats.
My head says 2-1 to Australia but my heart says 3-1 England. The missing numbers are draws.

Winning the toss is gonna be massive later. I'd hate to wake up and see England knocked over for 150 or less. Better to win the toss and see how the bowlers fare from the off.
I'm feeling Australia to win the series 3-1. I'd be delighted to be wrong of course. |

5-0 England... fuck it let's be positive before it goes tits up at around 1am tonight!
Let's be honest, Stokesy is a massive miss but this Aussie line up is VERY beatable. Shite batting order if you take Warner & Smith out and a bowling attack that's being lauded as the greatest thing since the Windies attack of the 70's & 80's.
Betting money is on the Aussies but if we can get them under pressure at The Gabba then it could set the tone for the series. This is NOT one of the great Aussie teams of the nineties/naughties so let's get at 'em and expose their frailties.
Just imagine the meltdown down under if they can't beat an England team without their talismanic all-rounder and with 2 or 3 "weak links" at the top of the order. |

It's a great chance for some of these fringe players to stake a claim for years.
Warner might not be far off when he says 'we will end your test careers' it's easy to say that to a team that's in transition with ageing stars.
He fucking dick that lad though. Same goes for Nathan Lyons aswell, I hope we can use their bullshit and turn it against them.
It's on BT, what a crock of Shite that will be. |

this series is very even.. Aussies are not strong team as they used to be, they are building the team, but since it is home team, they may come strong at time.
let see how it goes.. |

Bump.
Making my last post on FAB worthwhile and getting a decent thread back to the top of the list!
Come on England, do us proud.... Ashes win and an England RL World Cup win as well... now that would be a good winter down under!
And as a proud Lancastrian I hope Jimmy unleashes hell on those fuckers!
Enjoy! |

I'm gutted not to be watching it on tv and by the time C5 show highlights (I pressume) you know what's happened.
It's amazing though to listen to it on my phone.
Blower's will be missed.
Has anybody left a ball out for Starch to stand on?

Bairstow and Woakes to come. Tail has been immense last few years. 350-400 decent total. Pitch will suit our slower bowlers more. Game on
Gotta lose no more than one wicket in first session tomorrow morning. |

A very intriguing days cricket. Recovery from the early setback, Aussie fight back in the evening session. Violent spin on a first day pitch at Brisbane (almost unheard of). Moeen will have been delighted to see that.
I'm not staying up, listening to commentary tonight........honest, I'm not. |

I listened to the first two overs and went to bed.
Stoneman faced the second over and Lyons walks up to him, squats and rubs his hand in the crease.
Right. Fuck off. This is my crease, fuck off.
Lyons then chatted shit, walked off and continued to do so.
I hope someone knocks that shit pricks lid clean off his head.
24 overs fuck all for 40.
Dick head. |

What the fuck was that all about with Lyons? Rubbing his hands in the crease? I would of had a fucking word if I was the umpire. Its not just the players that have to set their stall out at the beginning but the umpires too.
The pop at Prior as well! Lyons is about as scary as a sheep, so he needs to let his skills talk rather than his ego. |

It was as he was off balance, side on, in the air etc.
But as we know rats are clever little creatures.
It's an hour before play on the 2nd day and i've woken up and checked the card.
I can't help but think we have met them off the hook twice. Should of scored more after being 150+-4. Now we need to get little piggy out.
It certainly bodes well for us and fills me with fresh optimism. |

We didn't get the little piggy out. He's class with a bat in his hand but sadly he dosent play for us.
I've just seen the footage of Root getting his lid broken thankfully he's ok. As always the opposition come to check he's ok, then it's back to hurling bouncers, yorker and insults.
A 7 run lead but 2 down already.
60-40 in Aussie favour at the moment I reckon |

They didn't.... but then again neither did the top or middle order either! Jesus Christ it was depressing waking up to that shite this morning against what is a bang average Aussie team. Need to bounce back quickly at Adelaide or the series could be over in the first 2 tests.

Oh dear, I go to sleep feeling positive the the game was well balanced, maybe shaded to the Aussies a tad.
I wake up to cricketing carnage, wtf? Four batsmen with starts, and not one goes big...pitiful. Add to that, the Aussie openers are now being given the 170 they need by the bowlers. Way to go fellas.
1-0 down, no real positives to take from this game. |

Hindsight aside, the winner of the toss are the favourites in a Brisbane test match, - so to lose it by 10 wickets ............... fuck!! |

If we (England) don't win in Adelaide there is little to no hope of getting anything out of the series.
I still think the series will be 3-2 but still can't make up my mind who to - both batting lineups are too inconsistent on the whole. |

Whilst I know it's to late for Adelaide, anyone else think Stokes is in Canterbury getting some practice? |

No, the ECB are so stuck in their ways. They'd leave him out just to be stubborn with their stance.
The CPS will take 'til January to decide that it was just a typical Friday night pissed up pub brawl. No charges will be served to Ben. The the ECB will spend the next 12 months and waste a million quid on an inquest into why we lost the Ashes 5-0 again. |

Not anymore. The police have concluded their investigation and have handed over the file to the CPS for them to decide on what charges, if any, are to be brought to bear. |

It's been nice the last week waking up with not worrying how many runs we have made.
I've never worried about the wickets but that cost us last match aswell. Get Smith out and keep then rattled.
I so hope we dont find ourselves 2-0 down after this, Day/Night er test.
I think it's already off a lot of people's radars due to the time difference and broadcast rights, any interest will just ebb away at 2-0 and an opportunity to grow the sport again will be gone along with our hopes of keeping the urn (as such). |

You quite often see England players on some cemented playground play 'quick' or 'all stars cricket' with that primary school kids.
The ECB made a huge investment with clubs and recruiting juniors with free plastic kit at the start of last season, it was very successful.
Then or even before that they sell out to BT. No highlights on terrestrial tv.
Some of the bbc commentators are complete fuck wits and bore the living shit out of me to be honest.
Blower's and Brian Johnson left shoes that will never be filled 'my dear old thing'. Probably the same with Richie Benaud in his ivory coloured suit.
If you got the time and it's new to you Google or youtube 'The 12th man'. Very clever and funny. |

Maybe that'll be the final kick up the ass that was needed, although I still can't see it.
It should never have been sold to sky in the first place, - the Aussies have it on terrestrial tv & so should we.
The quick buck is obviously more important than the development of the game to ECB gin swigging knobs |

Those that can afford these various subscriptions can usually afford to but little Timmy all the gear - no idea.
It's the kids from the inner cities, who's parents might have a Kodi box that are going to not get a sniff and thus the pot to pick from will not be as big.
It always has been a bit snobby but I'm on my 1 man chavvy mission to sort that out and have been for 25 years or so and i've done ok out of it.

219-8
Not one of them have reached 50 and now we are hoping the bowlers can save the game, avoid the follow on - with the bat.
If you ever hope your bowlers win the game with the bat then their teammates have let them down.
Pretty much how the bowlers let them down in the first innings by bowling too short.
Australia on average bowled 2M fuller.
We are going to be 2-0 down before we know it, will look back next year and see how the selectors have tinkered around for the last 18 months.
Oh well it'll be all over in a few days and you won't get that sinking feeling first thing in the morning, when you wake up and check the score. You'll get a week off from the pain again. |

I predicted before bed to Mrs N, that we'd be 150-odd with 6 or 7 down. Woke up at half six and bugger me, 160/7
Too many batsmen with scoring off every ball mindsets. The top order seem to have forgot how to 'get in' before starting to play their shots.
2-0 here we come. With the prospect of a 5-0 very, very real.
I'll also predict that in an act of desperation, the ECB will clear Ben Stokes to play, and he will fail too. |

Imagine being Cook, away from the family again for 3 months or so over Christmas (you can't fly everyone out) and you spend the time getting slated by the oppo on it and everyone else off it.
He'll hang his boots up and then a few more. Can't blame them but actually they are the only ones to blame.
5-0 or 3-2 we are going to lose. |

I've just got TMS on and they've referred to the listeners on R4 long wave stating that the broadcast will shortly turn to the Daily Service. I think that's a metaphor as England don't have a prayer!
The one thing we are missing with Stokes being out, is someone with aggression. Someone willing to snarl at the Aussies. It's a shame Willey isn't good enough for tests. |

52-4
Too little too late?"
I reckon it is, I mentioned above even 100 all out will be too much for us.
Hopefully they have learned a lesson in 'length bowling' all this short, back of a length, outside off is bullshit imo.
You can get out 7 ways, why remove the LBW law?
I would remove the LBW law in low level club cricket where you don't get appointed umpires. I'm fed up of fat blokes having a go at me when I'm umpiring instead of scoring |

You would just go back to padding up all the time.
What needs to happen is for the leagues to penalise clubs who don't have a properly qualified umpire.
Personally, I'm sick to death of standing both ends whilst one club supplies a rota of players standing at square who can barely count to 6, let alone judge a stumping. |

My mates look at me gone off when I suggest this.
On any Saturday or a Sunday or even a midweek T20 whoever scores more runs, wins.
So if someone wants to put two legs together and make it Damn obvious they are exploiting the rule change that's fine, after your 40 or 45 overs and your on 60-3 your not going to win.
Same goes for the 2nd innings. Your now in a chase needing 5 an over and your standing there running leg byes. Your going to fall short of the total.
You'd would remove so many arguments and I'd happily umpire.
There's so many changes I'd love to sport I must sound like Boycott.
I'd remove offside from football. Imagine the calm that would bring.
We don't have offside in hockey and it makes it so better, also we can ttake our equivalent of free kicks and throwing to ourself.
The game flows so well because of it. |

OK so 53-4 is pretty good, but the first innings lead is probably too big to make it worth too much.
For those bemoaning the ECB selling the rights to BT Sport - it has absolutely nothing to do with them. The home board (ACB) sells the rights to their home series. BT took the Australian rights to allow them to capture the Ashes. Even if (in fantasy world) the BBC had offered £10bn to the ECB for them they would be powerless to take it. |

For those bemoaning the ECB selling the rights to BT Sport - it has absolutely nothing to do with them. The home board (ACB) sells the rights to their home series. BT took the Australian rights to allow them to capture the Ashes. Even if (in fantasy world) the BBC had offered £10bn to the ECB for them they would be powerless to take it."
That's interesting to learn I had no idea the rights were down to the home side.
As mentioned above the Aussies got this on terrestrial tv (from what I gather) |

Provided Joe Root manages to survive a few starting overs in the morning, we've gotta believe. I was pessimistic in my predictions, I set off for work at the tea break expecting to see 7 down by the close. |

I'm supposed to be working but listened to the last hour on radio. Anyone that says cricket can't be intense needed to see that last hours play .Joe Root showing how a captain plays . We've got a chance |

2/3 more wickets and it's up to the bowlers with the bat in the hand.
I'd love England to win but I still can't see it happening.
That said, we'll done England showing a bit of steel with some pretty hostile deliveries. |

Superb viewing / listening.
Cricket is a marmite sport. But jeez that was great to watch.
As a player and avid fan. Had to say well done England. To claw our way bsck is superb. Still need a momentous effort on day 5. It could happen though.
Need huge support for Rooooottttt.
Even if we lose. I feel we could still win a couple of tests out there !! |

This great bit of commentary from The Guardian:
I still have no idea what you’re supposed to eat when it’s 7am in Britain and dinner time in Australia. I love the smell of chateaubriand in the morning, but it just feels so damn decadent.

Oh cool, that means that in the next home series the ECB will sell the live coverage to the BBC domestically & charge whichever international broadcaster a fortune.
But I won't hold my breath |

They should be if they want to improve it's audience reach, and in turn, increasing interest in test cricket. Of course it won't happen, and they'll sell out to Sky as always. |

When The BBC had it, Dickie Bird was umpiring and fans used to run on the pitch at the end of the match.

I can't copy and paste youtube links as I log in on my phone but the quickest way is to go to youtube and search for any of Billy Birmingham ' s material.
He's passed on now but he was the guy behind the ' 12th man' stuff.
It's a Micky take of the Channel 9 commentators.
I'm sure I still have a few cd's of the guys material, he's very funny and we'll worth a search.
It's hysterical to cricket lovers.

"You would have thought that at least one of our terrestrial channels would be able to air an hours highlights of what is the most important Test Match series in the England team's calendar? "
I see stuff on Facebook but I haven't clicked it as it won't do it any justice, might be from The ECB.
Such a pity, all we are asking for is highlights 12 hours later shown when it's nearer the next days play rather that the one your getting the highlights for.
I was gutted when The Ipl went from Itv4 to sky.
But I don't have to put up with Danny Maxwell or whatever his fricking name is. The NZ guy who gets over excited. Quite the opposite to Gower. |

Oh dear. Shot down with a whimper, by the Aussie pacemen. Young Joe needs to figure out solutions to a lot of problems, very quickly.
Where are the top 4 runs coming from?
Where are wickets coming from when the bowling changes start?
Why can't he restart his own innings the next day? He nearly always goes in the first over or two.
Who's going to provide the ferocious pace we need in the bowling attack? Skillful bowlers are good, but we need to be intimidating in the next test at Perth, a quickies dream pitch.
Where's the spine? We've been bullied out by Starc and Hazlewood, backed up by Lyon, who's made the ball dance at times.

If we could of turned up today and pulled a miracle off Steve Smith would of been hung out to dry.
He did so many things wrong The Aussie press would of slaughtered him, instead he got away with it and the pressure remains on us. |

I'll get my prediction out there for Perth.
Defeat by an innings and 100+ runs.
I'll be delighted to have that completely proven wrong but I suspect with it being the WACA's final test match hosting, added to England not winning there in 40 years, that groundsmen will prepare a pacemans dream. |

3rd and most crucial of tests has started.
I woke up and England (batting 2st) were 175-4 and I was thinking 'Ohh ffs here we go again'.
Make a brew, pop the news on and it was showing Overton getting bounced. Broke his lid another broke his bat and I thought 'rather you than me' and kind of forgot about it.
He made a 50 and got given out when he shouldn't of been but David Malan is 110* and Barston 75*.
Well done fellas that's a bit more like it. Runs in the first innings, so far at least. |

A much more positive day's outcome. I woke up to Joe losing his wicket and fearing we'd be all out before the close.
Take a bow Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow. |

Fantastic days cricket from both sides with the Aussies pitching it up at the beginning and England's bats men coming out on top (with the exception of A.Cook who played around a straight ball) then the Aussies changed tack and started banging it in short of a length to get in and around the rib cage of the batsmen, I think Stoneman was unlucky but hats off to Bairstow and Malan not only putting the runs on the board but for seeing off the new ball 9 overs from the end, if we can come out of the morning session tomorrow just losing 1 wicket then we can give our bowlers something to go at and in turn put a bit of pressure on the Aussie batsmen.
Pity it's not on council telly so the nation could watch it and get behind the team.

6-35
That was our innings today.
Now our bowlers who lack a bit of place are going to get twatted.
Yet again we've created tonnes but it's probably still not enough. It could be a 'Five for' but it's probably not enough. We are just not good enough and need at least 6 on top of their game to win the game for you. We usually have 3 |

Yeah, I predict the aussies to bat 2 days, rack up 600+ and dangle a 200 target for day 5. Then blow us away before tea. |

I'm probably wrong but is it now a case of if you don't get Smith out before he gets to wave his bat your going to lose?
That makes Strayer vulnerable and if so we will look back with massive regret that we wernt quite good enough but then the guy sadly is that good. He must feel the pressure of a nation.
Again, that is IF I'm right |

Fair play to the Aussies, they've wiped the floor with our lot. I'd still be looking forward to the Boxing Day Test if I I were going. I've always wanted to experience the MCG. |

Nah not me. We either win 2-0 now or lose 2-0 - yeah captain obvious but maybe they will play differently without that pressure. Doubt. We don't bowl fast enough, spin the ball enough or bat well enough.
I'd be excited for the 1 dayers and see what happens there.

I don't think we could of beaten them elsewhere though but I think Australia would of beaten us.
UAE, India, The Caribbean, South Africa I can only guess but mine is the same result.
Maybe NZ we could of got something but I couldn't agree more, home advantage is huge due to conditions. |
