The Forest

A short while ago I was called to a cardiac arrest in a shopping centre. When I got there I was quite shocked to see that not one of the 40 or so onlookers was attempting cpr/bls.

Out of interest, how many on here know cpr/bls? If you do, would you do it on a complete stranger?

I know CPR, though I've not needed to use it (yet - touch wood).

I'd like to think that I would use it on a complete stranger, although I might skip the rescue breaths and do chest compressions only, if there was blood/vomit on the stranger's face

I was a first aider about 5 years ago but due to my low cognitive capacity and poor memory it's all a blur now.

I'd love to do one those emergency tracheotomies with a biro pen, fuck yeah!

Yes I know what to do, but I'm not sure if I could do it to be honest.

I've never faced that situation full on to see how I would react. The thing is with me, I'd like to think I would step forward and do my best to help but I'm not sure if I'd go into some kind of blind panic and totally freeze.

Yes and yes

Know my ABCD, fortunately not had to use it in practice. Have come across a few trips, falls but people are usually more embarrassed or store person gets there same time as me. They were getting back up on their own or trying to.

Triage training, if they are screaming you can ignore them if there are multiples

Being a few years since a refresher course, used to be annual when working in NHS, and then a few army courses years ago.

I am a qualified first aider and have had to administer CPR or aid on more than one occasion.

Worst was after a jeep crash while we were on holiday. It was full of young guys who had just overtaken our vehicle at speed and they lost theirs on a bend, I seemed to just switch to being very cold clinical and aided them as if on autopilot till the ambulances arrived.

Afterwards I was an emotional mess, but the ambulance crews said that the guys in the jeep were lucky I had been there.

Trained in CPR and Oxygen administration but thankfully never been called upon to put it in to practice. Just hope I could cope if needed

Yes did first aid many years ago and then a few years ago I did a refresher course as mine was out of date. Have never had to give CPR. Not sure if I would be confident enough to help a stranger or if I would panick and freeze.

I think its because people are afraid of being sued if they step in to help and something goes wrong,,, like break a rib and puncture a lung

Although i done first aid once and was shown how to do it, the rules and regs on the procedure change a lot so i was made to believe. Id be afraid to get it wrong. Practicing on a dummy is very different to the real thing im sure

Yes I know, yes Ive been properly trained and yes I would have no hesitation on doing it on a complete stranger, id be more worried if I hesitated when the need arose.

some attempt at cpr is better than nothing . just getting the smallest ammount of oxygen into the body is better than nothing . im etoc trained and the trainer assured us you cannot be sued for trying to save a life even if you do crack there ribs

Over the years, I've been a trained First Aider in various companies.

Though I've attended various accidents at work and even in public streets, I've never had to carry out CPR.

I am however, a trained First Aider at the moment.

Any lady want me to practice my bandaging skills on??

I did it on a man I used to work for when he had heart attack in front of me .. he died anyway and I was heart broken.

Still glad I tried though & so was his daughter when I went to tell her the bad news.

The whole event had a profound effect on me though ;-(

My work policy is NOT TO GET INVOLVED .. just call 999 .. but I could't not try even if I was not 100% sure if I was doing it right.

He used to refer to me as his other daughter .. not just someone who came in to help him with paperwork / shopping etc. on a weekly basis for 4yrs LOL

Our work policy is that they've trained me as a first aider, so should I feel that I can help, I should try to. Luckily never had to yet, only had a couple of butterfly stitches to attach.

i really dont believe not getting involved is an option . if it were 1 of my family members id be more at peace knowing some 1 had at least tried than just left them there to die xx
