... are so bloody expensive these days! I thought I would get a nice bit of shin beef for a slow cooked chilli, £9.20/kg! Silverside and topside of beef, £7/kg. It's crazy! Whatever happened to the cheap cuts?

When you add the cost of fuel to cook them they are no longer cheap unless you cook in bulk.

Well some became fashionable, remember when pulled pork was "scraps"

Lidl do have some nice meat, occasionally though the meat is let down by the butchery, cut or rolled badly. Other times though pretty good.

I buy meat in bulk, is the only way to make it reasonable, so have to freeze it.

There's still the odd bit of decent cheap stuff out there. Do love a shin of beef I must say

Our local farms have some good deals on bulk meats. We've got a few good abattoirs too that do big hampers that last a couple of months if cooked in stews/curries, etc.

We buy whole butchered animals when we can afford it. It cuts down on cost.

Shin and the like are fashionable now

Cheap cuts of meat aren't cheap anymore because the celebrity chefs all started using them and telling people how cheap they are and how tasty.

This made them desirable and trendy and as a consequence the prices skyrocket

Me too!

We don't like the fatty cuts of meat much anyway. I buy large joints of topside beef, cut it up myself and use it for stews. It cooks quicker too which is a bonus.

I've seen the price difference in my local butchers for a few years now, ludicrous, yet TV chefs still prattle on about cheap cuts being "pennies"!

Jamie Oliver was making a lamb tagine and said it's cheap because you use the cheaper cuts of lamb. The meat would have cost £12.

The thing is though....the nutters will pay him around £250 for that 12 quid of meat in one of his restaurants.

So to him it is a cheap cut.

OK then here's a cheap cut and don't go all shouty until you've tried it.

Tesco beef heart...now I hear you all going ...but I've had it unknowingly I must admit and to be honest I thought I was eating topside of beef. Tesco are selling it for £3.50 a kilo but you'll more then likely get it cheaper at a local butcher.

Great for stews and curries too

I've never eaten heart, I don't like offal normally. What's the texture like?

I dislike the texture of cheek so if it's anything like that I wouldn't eat it.

To be honest it was years back when I tasted it and my mate told me it was topside...and that's what it looked and tasted like.

I must admit if he had told me it was heart first...I wouldn't have eaten the fecker. But I'm glad I did...and I'll be off to tesco now to have again
