Window shopping is a crime

Basingstoke

A glasgow man has been jailed for 70 days... his crime was staring through the window of a pharmacy. Joe Michael Yexley had been into the pharmacy, asked for an item that was out of stock and then left. He then stared at the assistant through the window... menacingly. Twice. That lands you in jail.

I give it 5 years before the government launches their thought police unit.

I don't want to get a forum ban for posting links to unauthorised sources but i did read the story in about three different local newspapers and really couldn't find more to it than the guy was homeless, had previous convicitions and obviously the assistant didn't appreciate his stares. You'll find plenty with google and I've given his name.

I'm not fully aufait with Scottish law.

Seems a strange story, but in a country where you have to do a hell if a lot before you get jailed, I wonder if he had precons for harassment or sexual offences which were considered when sentencing.

Other than that the reporting in it is rather poor so commenting on it is hard without facts.

It's one of those things where you realise something incredibly minor can be a crime. Like when that girl swore at the BBC radio presenter and got jailed. Granted they have prior convictions.

Homeless - wanted a place to stay due to the cold.

Good luck to him! Nice and warm now, 3 meals a day, and even gets to speak to people too.

Can't fine him. Can't make him do community service. Might as well jail him.

city

I was at a function, and we all sat at round tables, dance floor and presentation infront of me. Meal was served, drinks, then a disco started.

Dance floor fills up.

The a girl comes over to me and starts talking. I stepped aside cause I couldnt hear her.

"Can you stop staring at my friend its making her uncomfortable"

I had no idea what she was talking about. "who is your friend?"

She pointed to the table I was sitting at, the girl directly between me and the dancefloor.

Anyway I ended up shouting at the girl that the world doesnt revolve around them and that they were INFRONT OF THE FUCKING DANCEFLOOR.

Ruined my whole night.

But yeah, you're not allowed look at a girl, touch her knee, tap her on the shoulder, say something suggestive, joke, smile etc etc.

Oh gosh, yeah i know the type. They are usually 6/10 attractive. Not ugly enough to make the accusation ridiculous but clearly not hot enough for it to be true. Difficult to articulate that in a non-offensive way though.

Something about the use of the word 'menacingly' suggests that he wasn't just browsing.

He pled guilty to menacing behaviour. Still seems a little harsh!

Thats it, cant even look in their direction.

I understand the shopkeeper might have been irked, or even the girl sitting across from me if she thought i was creeping on her.

But i dont see how looking in someones direction should be a crime. Specially when I was accused of it and I never even noticed the girl sitting there till it was said to me.
