Are we living in or creating a helpless society.

A society where very few of us can simply fend for ourselves or resolve problems, without demanding help, or having to make formal complaints to various bodies because we don't like situations, rather than resolving life's experiences?

This stems from a culture of everyone wins.

School sports days where everyone gets a prize for participating.

Also a culture where everyone should strive for a degree, irrespective of it's value.

Life is harsh and our children are poorly prepared for it. We give them more than we had to compensate for our childhoods.

It isn't their fault.

Id rather live in a society that is helpful and supportive of those who live in it as opposed to a stricter survival of the fittest scenario.

I appreciate that that may create an environment where some people rely on it more than others, but even the fittest have some reliance.

It does seem that this generation is going through more than I did at their age and not coping well. I'm not sure I'd even heard of depression at 15,lots of kid's nowadays listening to my daughters are having breakdowns and councilling for everything under the sun.

Councilling is good of course, but I just wonder where things have got so bad for them. Social media, more pressure to do well etc

I think it's always been like this but because of social media etc, we're more aware of it.

There always has and always will be the attention seekers and "my life is so hard types". They tend to shout the loudest when they need the least help. I try to keep an eye out for those least likely to ask for help. After all, you never know when you'll need it yourself.

No. Are we being made to be more aware of the problems people other than us experience? Yes.

We are more aware due to social media I agree, though I do believe were convincing people that every hurdle they face in life is unjust, or should be resolved formally.

I don't advocate a survival of the fittest society and welcome a caring helpful environment.

But at the same time we need to enable people to help themselves in situations for their own good and confidence.

No, I don't believe we are

There have always been people who aren't self reliant and those who demand help. Formal complaints often lead to much needed change and contrary to popular opinion it isn't easy to claim compensation even when a case is just.

Some of life's experience do cause people to need help and I'd like to see more available not less. If that help gives people strategies that enable them to help themselves in future or help others even better.

It's nothing to do with social media. It's due to an across the board sense of entitlement and a willingness to receive from a society which is not equally contributed to.

It's sad to see so many condemning those that are more vulnerable. Especially as that number appears to be growing and the resources used to support them disappearing. But I'm not altogether surprised

In what ways are people more helpless? And what is the evidence to support this?

These topics are always so vague...

Yes.

My family up in Glasgow do my head in for it...my sister is still waiting for the council to come and put a door handle on her kitchen door..it's been ages..it's become a thing..

'bloody council should be doing this and that'

Fuck off..they already give you a cheap as fuck house, go to the shop and buy a door handle and work out how to fit it yourself you reliant twat, there's nothing wrong with you.

She's also waiting for the council to come decorate....fucking buy some paint yourself then you entitled twat and stop waiting for this mythical council to fix your shit

You see it all over though, people pin their situations on councils, governments, whatever officialdom might be 'responsible' for something, political climate..whatever... when a great deal of the time, you could do something yourself.

Take the guys on here who blame other men for 'making it difficult' for them. Bullshit, you just want to pin the blame somewhere other than yourself.

As a species we're soft, reliant and love to blame.

A lot of folk couldn't even russle up a good dinner without money in their pockets.
