I've dug throw my cd pile and put on a old classic.
How good is Jeff Wayne,s war of the world musical ?
i think it's grate.
A fine balance or rock and classic music at the same time.
Wot do you think ?

I remember thirty years ago, my neighbour playing this. It scared the shit out of me and I couldn't wait for my mum to come home. I can't forget how terrified I was, even after so long. But it definitely is something that stuck with me, and I enjoy. I remember listening to it a second time shortly after that night, and looking through the artwork that came with the double LP. It definitely was something that engrossed me as a kid. In fact pretty much anything war of the world's did. I love the old film adaptation. I would love to hear the Orson Welles radio version too |

It is a classic no doubt.
Forever Autumn is my favourite track, Burtons voice is perfect the narrator. Didn’t the late great Phil Lynott perform on this? Wasn’t he a priest or a preacher? It’s been a while since I listened to it. |

Did you know the sound of the Martian unscrewing the capsule lid was Jeff Wayne's wife rubbing two pans together played back at one quarter speed? |

The new version is piss poor. I'm sure they did the original as a 3D sound version on CD?

I've got the original vinyl version, the SACD which contains a brilliant surround sound version of the album and a 7CD/DVD box set which contains tons of rehearsals and outtakes, including Richard Burton narrating parts of the book that didn't make it to the final version of the album. |

Herbie Flowers was, of course, also the bass player in Sky. Top musician.

And he was Bowie's bass player for a while too...before he got a bit uppity and asked to be paid the going rate for the job, so Bowie sacked him (and the rest of the band, if I remember correctly). It all kicked off around the recording of 'David Live'. |

To be fair, as much as I love the album, a lot of it sounds horribly dated these days, particularly 'The Eve of the War' with it's shitty disco beats.
It's still better than the crap re-record with Barlow, Neeson et al though...that was a complete clusterfuck. |

Some Blu-Ray players will play SACD, not all. I've got a Cambridge universal player that will play pretty much anything you throw at it but it's the exception, rather than the norm. |

My wife knows that my record collection is my life insurance....plenty to pay for a good send-off and give her a nest egg.
I never did understand the mania for throwing away LPs in the 80s and 90s....but am grateful so many people did because that is when I amassed half my collection. The day I picked up mint, first presses of the first three Yes records for a total of £30 sticks out as particularly good... |

I generally listen to it on my iPod, vinyl is a bit too fragile for my liking.
In my opinion, War of the Worlds is one of the best pieces of art to ever grace the world. I'd love to see the live stage version at some point.

So we had War of the Worlds, fantastic album massive Thin Lizzy fan so loved the fact that Phil Lynott was singing and playing bass, actually David Essex does a good job as well.
But think about the other albums at that time that also had a storyline Quadrophinia and Tommy from The Who and the other obvious one Pink Floyds The Wall even Genesis Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, nobody is doing the Rock Opera stuff anymore. |
