Not necessarily better, but different and therefore just as good as the original:
It Must Be Love/One Step Beyond - Madness
Heatwave - The Jam
Police & Thieves - The Clash
Feeling Good - Muse |

A very worthy collection but I have seen Nina Simone sing it live so for me the cover version doesn't get through
The jam one is brilliant though - Paul weller has some talent |

I am loath to say some covers are better than the original, especially if said original was performed by the piece's writer/composer. Nevertheless some cracking covers are Aretha Franklin - The Weight, Redhouse Painters - All Mixed Up and Nouvelle Vague - Making Plans for Nigel. |

I've just started listening to Ade Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds again, I wouldn't necessarily say better but their reworking of old punk tunes are amazing |

Oh as I said all of those I don't consider better but as good as the originals - the Nina Simone original of Feeling Good is a classic.
Check out this cover of The Jam's "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight" from a recent charity album:

Is one of my favourite songs of all time - that cover I posted is pretty good - a female vocal outs a totally different spin on it |

"Disturbed - Sound of Silence."
ok. I disliked this too start with. But with some thought. It'll never best original. But a good alternative. The original is timeless and indicative of the time. I can't explain it |

Noel Gallagher's singing voice is terrible.
I like both guns n roses covers of knocking on heaven's door, and live and let die. |

"Cake-I Will Survive"
100% with you on this one - also like a relatively unknown Irish singer called Siomha's version of "a day in the life" by the Beatles - symply awesome just on an acoustic guitar & stunning voice |

Disturbeds version of sound of silence beats the original for me. The original is still awesome though.
Guns n roses covers of sympathy for the devil, live and let die and knocking on heavens door are all crap. Anyone thinking they are better than the originals needs to get their ears tested.
My pick is.

Nico's cover of These Days is fucking iconic. Emily Well's cover of Juicy is so different and eerie. And by the end of that summer in 2013 i was so sick of Get Lucky that Daughter's cover was a welcome change.
I know loads of people have mentioned it but i can't stand Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence. His voice is so throaty and nasal and is a bit too 'rock cliche' for me. its not an uncoverable song either, James Blake's cover sounds like an updated version of the original (then again his covers of A Case of You and Limit to your Love are impeccable). |

It's a tall order to improve a Jimi Hendrix tune. SRV manages it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An4uDegHB8s
Richard Thompson gives the one a good going over. It has a totally different meaning when a middle aged man sings it

Royal blood did a live lounge cover of Roxanne, which was awesome!
Hozier covered ariana Grandes "problem" and made it really enjoyable to listen to (also mashed it up with some regulate by nate dogg and warren G)
And Biffy Clyro did an incredible cover of the song Tilted by somethine and the queens i want to say last year.
Thats just a few |

"Fine Young Cannibals- Suspicious Minds , one of the best cover versions ever and Elvis version was quality too...
On a similar vein.....Pet Shop Boys - Always on my Mind. Pretty damn good."
On that note! Twenty one pilots version of can't help falling in love it the best I've heard |
