Tax credit debt recovery

Some of you may remember this time last year I needed advice on a debt that technically wasn't mine. I received some very very good advice so I'm turning to you guys again

I've 2 payments left to pay via DD, the original date was set up as the 30th of every month for 1 year. The date then got moved BY ME to the 25th of the month approx 3 months in. For the last 6 months they have been taking the debt on the day my disability money goes in. Now this never goes in on the same date as it's on a 2 week rotation. So they shouldn't be taking it on that date but they are. Call me paranoid but I'm convinced as it's a government debt that they know when my money goes in. This time it's really shafted me and left me with not enough money for food.

More paranoid time!

I've phoned the number on the letter to complain and the number is out of service.

I've googled the company and the website is out of service.

Do I phone tax credits?

Or as the debt is now only just shy of £60 cancel the DD?

Please help

Why default on a 1yr repayment for the sake of £60.

I don't want to default but I'm concerned because I can't get hold of the company. X

I've always found that it's really difficult to get through to any tax department, but found the best time to call tax credits is around school run time.

With regards to them taking the money when you get paid, it does seem quite a coincidence but I don't have that much faith in the government that they could be so joined up to do that.

Are you able to get a crisis payment or something from the job centre to tide you over?

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Do you have an address for them? Perhaps write to them with a check for the outstanding amount?

That's a good idea didn't think of that. If I do it recorded delivery and it isn't delivered will it be returned to me? X

Yes it should be as you'll give your address when you send it.

Good luck

If they are taking more than agreed this is against the law

If they moved the date and took it out when you did not agree again against the law

personally i would just go let it carry on and have the last payments go through

It sounds to me as if Tax credits have sold the debt to another company. If they are taking the money on a different date before the agreed date then that is unauthorised and you should contact your bank. Yes the government agencies will know what date all your payments are made and they can also look at your bank account any time without asking permission from you.

I would advise you to go to the citizens advice and ask them to look into it for you. I hope you get it sorted x

exactly and talk to the DWP that you owe O and get it in writing.

i would also keep a copy of all statement with this going out of your account and your calculations, then if they did say "u owe us" you can prove you dont

HTH x

(paper-trails are always a safe bet to have with companies, its why most places i deal with i have email or writen correspondence )

Ok thank you. I know the last payment is slightly less then all the previous ones so I'll know when the last one has gone out. Then I'll be debt free (except from mother. ) x

Don't send a cheque at all. Of you can't get through to them bcz the number isn't in use, then how does anyone get through to them to discuss anything. I'd just write and ask if a letter is the only way to get in touch with. Phone tax credits and see what they say. More people you contact. The more chance you'll have to get some answers
