"Haven't they banned them due to some health and safety concerns?"
I'm surprised the animal activists haven't kicked up a stink and said its cruel to the fish. My bet is if theres public health concerns the government will dither and write several green papers on it then make up a new tax law.
However if the fish are at risk - it will be closed down tomorrow ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) ![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

There has been a business like this in Derby for a couple of years. Not tried it yet but that is probably due to me respecting the fishes health!
An oriental couple tried their luck on Dragon's Den recently with the same idea but left empty handed. ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

how do you know itsbad for their health? its not like fish can be trained to do things and whipped if they dont obey is it???
i have been to one before and the tanks are very clean, they have UV filtration to get rid of all the nasties in the water |

"The article says the ealth authorities are worried about cross contamination via the fish to other people.
ITS just scare mongering. "
I know when I have mine done they check feet won't let you use it if have any broken skin and I don't think although don't quote me on it they would allow anyone with athletes foot to use it either.
Enjoy I know I do once I get over the weird feeling ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Its such a cruel practice to use the fish this way!! balls to spreading disease between people/dumb women using them!!
The people setting up shops have no licences or experience of looking after fish anyone who uses these shops are arseholes, if it was monkeys or pandas doing it there would be an outrage!!
Im no animal rights person just keep tropical fish, this is just like the tanks in the high street perfume places that had all the artificially coloured fish in to make women coo over the pinks etc to buy their products!! that was finally banned due to the fish being injected with pigments to alter their colours etc.
hopefully someone will see sense and ban this cruel activity!! makes me realy angry this practice for information they keep far too many fish in the small areas you put your feet into!! for fish they should have a minimum of 1 litres for every cm of fish!! these feet areas only have 30/60 litres in them so should have a maximum of 10/25 fish in them they have at least 60/80 in each that ive seen first hand. ask them when you go in the size of the foot tanks and count the number of fish!! ![](/icons/s/twisted.gif) |

The Health Protection Agency have issued a statement in relation to this which states there have been no cases of infection and the risk is extremely small.
Of course go to a reputable salon who do keep the tanks spotless and who do have filtration systems. If you go to a market stall then you can't be sure they are keeping things as clean as they can ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

"surey there is no more risk that going to a swimming pool or spa???"
In a pool, jacuzzi etc they can use chemicals which kill off the nasties in the water pretty much instantly. In a fish tank these chemicals would also kill off the fish, so you rely on the water passing over a UV light and hopefully keeping the nasties under control; pretty much the same as in my fish pond. However.... depending on the size of the tank and pump it make take an hour or two for the water to have been circulated through the filter... so, you're basically putting your feet in the same untreated water as the last customer... or 6.
I know what nasties I find living in my pressurise UV filter
Then you have to think of the level of competency of the person looking at your feet before allowing you to soak them in the water which probably has the skin and gunk from the last person's (or 6) feet still floating around in it. Would they know a fungal nail infection if they saw one?
Personally, when I go to have my feey pampered I will look at the fish whilst soaking my feet in the sanitised footspa and let the nice lady grate the skin off manually.

So, the idea is you stick ya foot in a bowl of water for a bunch of fish to nibble on, straight after someone else has stuck their gangrenous foot in the same bowl of water with the same bunch of fish yakking on it?
No thanks. ![](/icons/s/redface.gif) |
