The people of Britain have some very strange ideas about what exercise is. Over three quarters of the members in your average gym are a:

- waddling wendy who grips the damn handrail on the treadmill making it incredibly easy

- punny paul who weights 65kg and swears blind he can do 150kg on the lat pulldown, even though he can't manage two chin ups

- posing peter who exerts himself for 30 seconds, on a machine of course, and then sits on his phone for 8 minutes 'rest', later humblebragging about his 3 hour workout

- sociable suzie who just walks around nattering to her friends and never actually does any exercise

- that stupid fat twat over there in the red top dropping every weight on the floor and grunting like they are heavy even though most of us could lift it with our penis or fanny flaps

What the fuck is wrong with people...

Not forgetting Nosey Nigel who is more interested in what everyone else is doing at the gym rather than concentrating on what he is there for

People don't actually like making themselves feel uncomfortable. So they do the things you've described. If they pushed themselves to feel uncomfortable they would a) spend less time at the gym b) make actual changes over time. Notice those people are the same year round and never seem to actually progress.

True but it's hard to stay focussed when you have some moron behind you 'deadlifting' but dropping the bar from the top of every rep.

maybe they dont want to make the same sort of progress you do...

maybe for them progress is making it out of the door due to crippling social anxiety.

maybe, just maybe people have their own reasons for doing things

Err no, I've burnt 800 calories so not 'fuck all' and i love the way you wrote 'right' as if the correct form for a deadlift is subjective. Says it all really.

Every gym offers free inductions so there's no excuse. If you used all your mental strength to come and do these things then you wasted your trip and would have been better off taking the dog for a longer walk.

i spent years shying away frompublic exercise (well all exercise to be fair!), not because of social anxiety but for fear i would be judged or laughed at, started and pointed at until one day i simply thought 'fuck it!'. i needed to do something for my body and my health.

I know it happens, but it doesnt make it right and it should be challenged.

luckily i found running and parkrun and a wonderful bunch of supportive and encouraging people.

I also have a gym at work where again supportive and encouraging people train.

Of course there are all sorts.

But there's all sorts doing a multitude of things in rather odd ways in everything in life.

They're doing what they choose to do and I daresay there's people who would scoff at you or I at certain things we do in life.

Head down and focus on yourself unless someone seems help.

I am waddling Wendy as I do hold onto the handrail. Not because I'm lazy and taking an easy option but because I had a TIA a couple of years ago which affected my balance. I did have an induction and I do know how to use the machines .........safely

My workouts in the gym usually last around 30 mins. My target is 5 - 6 different weighted exercises, 3 sets of 12 - 16. I end up in a right sweat.

The things I see in that time are laughable, including people who have paid personal trainers who are showing them how to do step ups!

What really gets me, though, is the amount of time people spend with their phones out!

Yes i judge people who drop weights making a lot of noise. It's anti-social. Yes i judge people who sit on machines for ages in between sets. It's anti-social.

You seem to implicitly believe that being 'nice' is going along with peoples delusions. There's a hard science behind what does and doesn't work in exercise and your attitude is the reason nobody goes up to wendy and says "if you took your hands off the rail, lowered the speed and increased the incline then you'll be doing something a lot more productive".

At least waddling Wendy is trying to make a difference to her life.

Would the OP prefer she stays at home eating pizza just so she doesn't offend their delicate eyes?

I used to be "waddling Wendy" clinging onto the bar on the treadmill. The reason for this is because I have a spinal injury and couldn't walk unaided. It took me nearly a year but I improved my health to a point where I don't need any walking aids and was even able to run on the treadmill for short periods. In the process I also lost 7 stone.

Thankfully I went to a gym where the other members are not judgemental like the OP and were encouraging and supportive. A gym is for anyone who wants to try and get fit, not just those who already are.

What tosh. If wendy was recovering from a spinal injury then she wouldn't have the treadmill on a delusionally fast speed that she couldn't possibly maintain without the handrail. The common theme is people cheating their way through gym sessions and deluding themselves, stop try to make it about something it's not.

Went a couple times..find it weird folk all congregated to exercise, most of them judging the way you use the gym and getting all snooty if you don't follow a particular etiquette and wipe down every surface you brush past...it's a plain uncomfortable environment to be in.

Prefer to do my own thing and have my own freedoms

You seem to implicitly believe that being 'nice' is going along with peoples delusions. There's a hard science behind what does and doesn't work in exercise and your attitude is the reason nobody goes up to wendy and says "if you took your hands off the rail, lowered the speed and increased the incline then you'll be doing something a lot more productive".

LOL it really isn't.... I WOULD go up to Wendy and share tips and knowledge not smirk and pass judgement like you! How many Wendy's have you helped out?

I didn't smirk, you added that in. I'm sure the judgement in my head and thumbs is not the reason wendy doesn't make any progress. "

I’m glad I didn’t bump into an attitude like yours OP when I got back in the gym last year. It would have put me off ever going back.

I waddled my way along in the first few weeks but with supportive help from people who seemed to care rather than judge I’ve made pretty good progress.

"The people of Britain have some very strange ideas about what exercise is.

What the fuck is wrong with people...

. With the exception of Wendy I see all of these at my gym.I do bike and treadmill for just over a hour 3-4 times a week so far so good for me have lost some weight with hopefully more to come.

Good for you, finding 3 - 4 hours a week is excellent dedication "

. I finish work the gym is 5 minutes walk from my job it has almost becoming part of my working week.

and then there are those doing fuck all exercise because they are too busy making bullshit judgements on others trying to better themselves simply because they aren't doing it 'right'

you do your thing and let them do theirs. for some people it takes all of their mental strength to walk through those doors for fear of people judging them and this just proves they are right.

this sort of thing really pisses me off

Err no, I've burnt 800 calories so not 'fuck all' and i love the way you wrote 'right' as if the correct form for a deadlift is subjective. Says it all really.

Every gym offers free inductions so there's no excuse. If you used all your mental strength to come and do these things then you wasted your trip and would have been better off taking the dog for a longer walk.

i'll give you the fuck all exercise was wrong but not the 'right'.

you didn't even mention deadlifts it your judgmental tripe in your OP so it was clear by saying 'right' i meant you think your way is the only right way of doing things. they arent hurting you being there, you clearly still got to do the workout you wanted so whats the problem?

Basically yes. None of these people know how i feel about them, i rant on here rather than show them any contempt. I am not effecting them in any way. The only reason i know what I'm doing at the gym is that in my formative years i went to a decent one where the more experienced members would literally interrupt my workout to tell me when i was doing something stupid. Usually using far more weight than i could do with good form and they weren't afraid to tell me. Trial and error is generally how people learn. But people like you want everything to be subjective, let's all agree to disagree and have a medal for participating.

It is all about habits and routine. I put on too much fat because i was eating excessively everytime i felt stressed out. It became a habit that i didn't even think about, stressed out - must be time for some sweets. Fortunately I've broken the cycle and working back to a decent shape.

I put my headphones on, press play and train for 45 mins cardio and leave. I’m not interested in what other people do. But, Some of those people you describe have probably summed up a lot of courage to go to the gym which is more than most people do so don’t knock them.

I respectfully disagree. It's the Geordie shore, metrosexual men with their abercrombie and fitch tops that boil my piss. They never do free weights. Always pussy out on a machine that is just designed to make a free weight exercise easier, lat pulldown being a prime example.

"People don't actually like making themselves feel uncomfortable. So they do the things you've described. If they pushed themselves to feel uncomfortable they would a) spend less time at the gym b) make actual changes over time. Notice those people are the same year round and never seem to actually progress.

maybe they dont want to make the same sort of progress you do...

maybe for them progress is making it out of the door due to crippling social anxiety.

maybe, just maybe people have their own reasons for doing things

That's a very good point I hadn't considered

i spent years shying away frompublic exercise (well all exercise to be fair!), not because of social anxiety but for fear i would be judged or laughed at, started and pointed at until one day i simply thought 'fuck it!'. i needed to do something for my body and my health.

I know it happens, but it doesnt make it right and it should be challenged.

luckily i found running and parkrun and a wonderful bunch of supportive and encouraging people.

I also have a gym at work where again supportive and encouraging people train."

Because paying it forward doesn't mean helping people delude themselves. If anyone asks me for a spot i accept and always tell them to ask me whenever they need one. If I'm on a machine then i always invite people to work inbetween sets.

The gym is not the only place to exercise. If you jog up a flight of stairs 20 times then i assure you that your heart rate will go over 140bpm and you will be burning fat. If people can make it through the door, why should they not be encouraged to use the time wisely?

"The people of Britain have some very strange ideas about what exercise is.

What the fuck is wrong with people...

. With the exception of Wendy I see all of these at my gym.I do bike and treadmill for just over a hour 3-4 times a week so far so good for me have lost some weight with hopefully more to come.

Good for you, finding 3 - 4 hours a week is excellent dedication . I finish work the gym is 5 minutes walk from my job it has almost becoming part of my working week.

It is all about habits and routine. I put on too much fat because i was eating excessively everytime i felt stressed out. It became a habit that i didn't even think about, stressed out - must be time for some sweets. Fortunately I've broken the cycle and working back to a decent shape. "

. You are absolutely right good habits and routine as long as we work at it sick with we will get to where we want to be if not as long as we feel better that's good as well.

Yes, believe in objective science makes me a snob

Each to their own ! Does your subscription cost more because of these people op? Will your fitness be affected? Would you rather only gym bunnies used your gym? I'm confused to see what your actual problem is? "

Honestly it was the guy in the red top dropping deadlifts that prompted the thread. In 17 years of attending gyms I've never seen something so stupid and anti social. Not to mention it was a 90kg deadlift ffs.

Why is it for you to decide how they exercise? Maybe they like the safety of a gym. Maybe they want to get out and meet like minded people. You're just coming accross as very narrow minded right now.

"I'm the big bloke in the corner who goes about his business and doesn't worry about others, I steal all the weights and swear alot.

Most people think I'm a big angry, grumpy bloke when in fact I'm only to happy to help those less experienced than me.

Is your name Dave

Yep, big Dave "

We have a big Dave in our gym never does leg day but he’s a lovely chap

What the fuck is wrong with people...

and then there are those doing fuck all exercise because they are too busy making bullshit judgements on others trying to better themselves simply because they aren't doing it 'right'

you do your thing and let them do theirs. for some people it takes all of their mental strength to walk through those doors for fear of people judging them and this just proves they are right.

this sort of thing really pisses me off

You complain about fatties yet take the piss when they try to get to the gym? clever!

Oh... So I'm part of the problem and you're not... Riiiiggghhhttttt

I do like a medal lol

But everything is subjective. Their reasons for going to the gym might not be the same as yours. Why is that so wrong? People like you, making the judgements you do and making them public knowledge (not to their faces but I'll bet you there are people reading this that are to afraid to go to gym right now) are a major part of the problem.

Also... If you had such a positive experience in the gym, why wouldn't you want to pay that forward?

Because paying it forward doesn't mean helping people delude themselves. If anyone asks me for a spot i accept and always tell them to ask me whenever they need one. If I'm on a machine then i always invite people to work inbetween sets.

The gym is not the only place to exercise. If you jog up a flight of stairs 20 times then i assure you that your heart rate will go over 140bpm and you will be burning fat. If people can make it through the door, why should they not be encouraged to use the time wisely? "

You're 100% right Op about encouragement. But I see absolutely fuck all encouraging about your initial post, only criticism.

Not if they were any of the types described because they'd probably tell me that correct form is subjective and to leave them alone, as half the people on this thread have. Also I'm conscious of the fact that I'm not in the best shape of my life either so i don't think i currently look like the guy that should be dishing out advice, even if my advice is objectively correct. In other gyms at other times then i would gladly work with a younger person and offer them a spot / help them out.

I'm a bit of a waddling wendy, I've not been to the gym for years but I do go to exercise classes on a regular basis. I thought I'd try something different and try a kettlebells class and by fuck I thought I was going to keel over, but I pretty much kept up minus the burpees and reverse burpees but I kept moving for the whole hour and I was pretty impressed with myself especially as some of the gym bunnies also stopped ans skipped circuits.

I can be judgemental, but I keep my thoughts to myself but I wouldn't knock someone for tying to improve themselves no matter how tiny the effort. Now you might not have put them down in person, but coming on here complaining about them you might have just put someone else going back to the gym that sees themselves in one of the characters you so delicately described.

Have to excuse Posing Peter. He could be a power lifter who often have up to ten mins between sets.

I must add Blind Barry. He’s totally ignorant to who is training what and steps on to the machine you are using just after you have finished a set.

There ya have it in a nutshell why I wouldn't go to a gym. Desperately need to lose weight and get fit but to be judged and labelled like this. No thanks.

I'll stick to walks along the canal and hope my "waddling" doesn't offend the fit walkers.

Oh... So I'm part of the problem and you're not... Riiiiggghhhttttt

You're 100% right Op about encouragement. But I see absolutely fuck all encouraging about your initial post, only criticism.

You do understand that i didn't walk up to them and say "hey check out the forum on fabswingers because I'm just telling the internet what a twat you look like"?

I ranted on the interweb so that my face could betray my emotions.

Yeah I realise that but that's still your attitude to these folk. I know before I even type this that you won't give a shit but it doesn't come across well at all. You might be able to crack walnuts with your arse ( had a look at your pics...think you could) but a nasty attitude is extremely unappealing.

Anyway, not looking for a bun fight. Enjoy the gym and try to ignore these folk if you can't offer them the encouragement you mentioned."

Just go to the gym and use good form (ask someone if you don't know what that is), don't sit on machines for 8 minutes not using it, put weights down instead of dropping them and nobody is going to judge you.

Except it's not like fab because there are many different ways to enjoy sex but there is only one way to deadlift.

When I'm at the gym I'm usually too busy focusing on what I'm doing to worry about what others are up to. That said when I've been waiting for a class or my PT and done a bit of people watching the vast majority in our gym are cracking on minding their own business too. And if they're not hey no, they've paid to be there too so as long as they're not hogging a machine while they sit playing on their phone for ages who cares.

Very true. I do prefer hardcore gyms but then tend to be privately owned by people into fitness and not open 24/7. That's the only redeeming feature of this gym, open 24/7 and parking.

Everyone can choose to use a gym if they want to.

I joined a ladies only gym, simply because I feel more comfortable there.

I do my own thing.

There are some ladies who have had knee ops or accidents. They go slowly and precisely to strengthen their joints.

Then there are the naturally thin people who are there for strength.

Not everyone is obsessed with burning fat or calories.

Live and let live, no one has the right to judge.

Yes. I always do. Especially if they may look at causing injury or maybe if it’s hard to deduce what they are training when using isolation exercises. I normally go over day hi. Ask how they are getting on, what they are training. Then ask if they would like me to correct their form so that they get the full benefit of the exercise.

Very similar with me, I went to the gym about 4 years ago for the first time, I had never used a treadmill let alone a rowing machine and free weights.

Ok I am still big, but my iPod goes on music is on and I do workouts to help me. So I run 2.5km on a treadmill, and cycle for 2o mins and row and do cross trainer for about 45 mins to an hour 2 or 3 times a week

I lift weights and press what I feel comfy with and I when I am in the gym I do what is right for me.

It shouldn’t put you off. Those that really know what they are doIng are friendly, chatty and helpful. It always reminds me with these threads that a little information can be dangerous. I know I commented earlier on people jumping in on machines, however I am experienced enough to adjust my workout while someone else gets to do theirs without copping the arse.

Everyday is a learning day no matter how good people think they are. Their are people who know they are and they are the ones to follow, watch and ask. They are more than willing to help. They have been through the pain and pitfalls and could save you months and years of learning the hard way.

It does annoy me seeing folk with REALLY bad technique and the staff never suggest improvements.

The gym should be about the effort you put in, not the size of weights you are lifting... AND if you need to drop the weights on the floor, they are too heavy.

Only been to a gym once. Friend invited me to his. I didn't like it.

A lot of people look at you, and its hard to plan out your workout. Seems like people run to use a machine you are walking toward.

I loved how easy it was to up the weights between sets on the machines. At home I use weights I bought in argos and all my rest time is spent adding weights, then setting up next exercise.

Anyway have fun.

"The people of Britain have some very strange ideas about what exercise is.

What the fuck is wrong with people...

and then there are those doing fuck all exercise because they are too busy making bullshit judgements on others trying to better themselves simply because they aren't doing it 'right'

you do your thing and let them do theirs. for some people it takes all of their mental strength to walk through those doors for fear of people judging them and this just proves they are right.

this sort of thing really pisses me off

You complain about fatties yet take the piss when they try to get to the gym? clever!

Oh... So I'm part of the problem and you're not... Riiiiggghhhttttt

Enjoy the gym and try to ignore these folk if you can't offer them the encouragement you mentioned......

....I'm wiping the dust off my Davina dvds now .. but may end up arse over elbow behind the tele as I've had half a bottle of rose..

"The guy I train with is 71 and as strong as an ox, why is this? because he enjoys it and has done for about 40 years, why do I train with him? cos hes got a lot of experience and he inspires me but most of all hes non judgemental, if someone is in there dicking round on their phones or chatting, let them, we have all paidto be there, let them be, dont judge, you can only be a better you (thats what he tells me)"

Reminds me of a quote I saw (quite appropriately in a gym) The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday. Really liked that.

I'm probably the one you'd describe as a 'waddling wendy'

Like other posters I'm recovering from a spinal injury, I'm also on medication which makes it very hard to lose weight and the injury had me immobile for several months.

I've had various treatments inc physio, the gym visits are actually an extension of that.

My QUALIFIED PT (which you CLEARLY are not), has instructed me NOT to use an incline and to have my hands on the bars at all times (nerves in my legs messed up can mean my legs can just go from under me with no warning), I also have been instructed on 'odd' (to the uneducated) methods to using other equipment. AND to rest a full five mins before standing after using certain fixed weight machines.

You have NO IDEA

A what these people's medical history is

B what they've been CORRECTLY told to do.

C what their goal is

D what progress they've made

E what the CURRENT correct advice for them is (or you seeing as you seem to be saying you're still following knowledge from several years ago - science on physiology is constantly changing)

F as pps have said what demons THEY are battling let alone how you would feel in their shoes.

Maybe learn some empathy and compassion

and then there are those doing fuck all exercise because they are too busy making bullshit judgements on others trying to better themselves simply because they aren't doing it 'right'

you do your thing and let them do theirs. for some people it takes all of their mental strength to walk through those doors for fear of people judging them and this just proves they are right.

this sort of thing really pisses me off

You complain about fatties yet take the piss when they try to get to the gym? clever!

Oh... So I'm part of the problem and you're not... Riiiiggghhhttttt

Enjoy the gym and try to ignore these folk if you can't offer them the encouragement you mentioned......

....I'm wiping the dust off my Davina dvds now .. but may end up arse over elbow behind the tele as I've had half a bottle of rose..

Pics or it didn’t happen

Im just requoting this so you have to scroll for

I'm sorry but that is the biggest load of crap. Try training for strongman and competing every 6-8 weeks and tell me it's easy or not worthy of mentioning what you've achieved.

Ultra marathon etc. are incredibly hard and I have the utmost respect and admiration for those that compete but they are no better as a sportsman/competitor than I am.

The other day I watched one girl as I was doing my workout sit on her phone for 20 minutes, then her friend came over and they both sat there for another 10 minutes on their phones.

Seriously why even come into the gym to just do that?

It's hillarious how many less-than-fit people have decided the reason they can't go to the gym is because of someone else who might think something nasty about them if they stubbornly refuse to train with any kind of proper technique. It really is pathetic to constantly blame other people for your problems and live as a perpetual victim.

If there are gym staff about then they should be telling folk if they're doing it wrong. That's their job, to ensure members get a safe and effective workout.

Maybe put a comment in the suggestion box that gym staff could be a bit more hands on with advice in the gym.

I was the fat twat who grunted & dropped the weights.

Luckily I joined a gym where no one was judgemental, competitive body builders stopped their training to help me out, the manageress, herself a pro comp winner sat & held me while I sobbed my eyes out in the changing rooms.

2½ yrs later, I've dropped 6 dress sizes, I'm 8st lighter, fitter than I've ever been.

Qualified as a PT & nutrionist, and bloody proud to now be the one that is there for the Waddling Wendy's of the world.
