Wrong. You Really Got Me is a great track but it's not a standalone. It was on the Kinks debut album.

It's not the first rock single, arguably that was Link Wray's Rumble in 1958. And I've long argued that the first punk was Little Richard.

As for first pop single, not even close.

Wrong. You Really Got Me is a great track but it's not a standalone. It was on the Kinks debut album.

It's not the first rock single, arguably that was Link Wray's Rumble in 1958. And I've long argued that the first punk was Little Richard.

As for first pop single, not even close.

Oo'ps what a twat you must take me for.....

But in my defence I should have realised where I an and made an allowance for any pedantic forumites who failed to realise I was taking a bout UK bands

So say you are sorry and I wont make any more of it

Track 7 side 1 of The Kinks album means You Really Got Me isn't a standalone single.

Lets see your list of UK songs and bands and I promise not to piss all over it

Because you obviously struggle with other peoples opinions "

There's a difference between opinions and facts.

MY opinions first:

I disagree with you on You Really Got Me being the first pop single because it seems to suggest The Beatles weren't pop which seems wrong to me.

I accept that You Really Got Me might be the first big power chord based UK hit which I suppose defines rock but the OP didn't specify UK hence our different views.

Facts however:

The OP asked for standalone singles. You Really Got Me is not a standalone.

In 1964 it was the first rock single , it was the first punk single and the first pop single .... no band since has come close to emulating the impact suck a song had on the musical culture of the next decade...

"New Order - Blue Monday

It did get added onto remastered versions but was never originally on an album"

The single we know as 'blue monday' by new order is also a stand alone as the first 10k pressings were in fact pressed the wrong way round and labelled wrong.these pressings have in fact got 'the beach' as the 'a' side and 'blue monday' as the 'b' side so if your lucky enough to have one of these they are a collectors item.

Or for that matter a lot of Christmas songs I would think, so the likes of Last Christmas - Wham, Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade etc.

"U2 - A Celebration

U2 - 11 O'Clock Tick Tock

Both great examples of early U2 songs (before they disappeared up their own arse) and both standalone singles, never released on other albums other than as bonus tracks on remasters, or compilation/live albums.

I genuinely believe that if the Waterboys hadn't suffered a musical lull U" would never have changed direction and fail to become popular "

I saw The Waterboys supporting U2 on the Unforgettable Fire tour; they were brilliant but Mike Scott didn't want to carry on playing that type of music, so after This is the Sea he went off exploring folk music for a few years.

I doubt anything The Waterboys did would have affected how big U2 became though and they didn't really change direction until Achtung Baby, by which time they were one of the biggest bands on the planet and able to do pretty much what they wanted, until the bubble burst a little and they reinvented themselves as 'old' U2 on All that you Can't Leave Behind.

Ironically, The Waterboys are back to being a rock band again now and are still brilliant!

Yes, therefore not a standalone. ie not included on an original album.

Incidentally some describe Big Science as her second album because she recorded one half of a shared album earlier. Not sure I'd say that counts myself, but interesting to note its existence.

as i stated, it wasn't included on an original album, therefore it is a standalone single ... proven fact .... it was originally written as a section of an eight hour long performance art piece United States ... of which a live recording was made some 2 years later.

If you think that because the album wasn't released at the time the single came out that makes it a standalone then I think you're misunderstanding standalone.

The fact that it was included on Big Science for me means that it was included on an original album. Unlike, for example, The Stone Roses' Sally Cinnamon which didn't appear on an album.

Appearing separately prior to the album doesn't make it a standalone. Appearing on Big Science means it is included on an original album regardless of earlier versions.

Nor does it fall into the category of hit single added to reissued albums, eg Jon & Vangelis' Find My Way Home was added to Friends of Mr Cairo, as it was on the original version of the album.

By your definition of standalone there are millions of singles that preceded the album but it makes no sense to call them standalones.

if a single is release as a stand alone and then 18 months later the artist is signed by a major and the piece is incorporated into a compilation of other works, such as in the case of big science, then it makes no sense to say that the record is no longer a stand alone single

Is Big Science a 'compilation of other works'? If that was true I would certainly agree with you. I don't think it is, as nothing else had previously been released as far as i know.

I do see where you are coming from but disagree. Perhaps we can view it as an exception to either of our interpretations, making it standalone in a different way.

Not exactly one thing nor the other but a quite unique piece all round.
