Given the vastness of the universe I think that surely we can’t be the only planet that has life forms. They may be not advanced in space travel or maybe they are here already but we don’t recognise them?

No I don't think we are alone. I don't think we'll ever know the truth.
I reckon they've visited us and thought "what a shithole" and they just keep coming back to see what else we've fucked up. |

It's impossible to truly believe in something you can't factually back up.
However I think on the balance of probabilities and from gazing up at the night sky many a time of say were not alone.
I did actually see what I believe to be a UFO once whilst in company. I was ridiculed so much when recounting the story I stopped telling it! |

Stephen Hawkins stands with the same attitude I have (this will probably be the last time I refer to myself in the same paragraph as that great man)
The universe is to big to think we otherwise, there must be other life forms out there. |

Yes I agree with that, the universe is mindbogglingly vast, there must be some other form of life in it somewhere XXX |

Yes, myself and a bunch of people were out watching a night car rally on the perimeter of a USAF base in the UK. There were also some USAF security policemen. We all saw a bunch of lights in the sky that moved like no known aircraft is capable of I have been around aircraft all my life). |

!
It hasn’t stopped religion..."
???? Don't understand that?
I don't agree with the previous posters comment either, but maybe you saying religion is factual or are you saying the belief in it isn't factual?... Religion is factual as it's man made... the spiritual side of man is harder to prove... but there's overwhelming evidence to show we are spiritual being too.
Proof. ... what is proof? |

I meant that religion hasn’t been factually backed up,but plenty of people believe in God,or their version of God.
Like UFO’s there’s plenty of circumstantial “evidence” that’s used by the believers to claim it’s all real.Unless Jesus himself floats down from the sky and performs miracles in front of the waiting press,or a little green man arrives in a flying saucer, there’s very little to get overly excited about,is there? |

"We are not alone and if i had a camera phone when i was 12. I'd have the proof. Will never forget that day but if course nobody believed me or my mate. I know what i saw though" Samw here . I was 5 or 6 and my dad was pushing me on the swing in our back garden . Suddenly this colossal craft came overhead it was so big it filled the sky . Pretty sure it was in our local paper too in the early eighties .

I don't believe that we are alone, that the only planet in the whole, entire universe that can support life is ours.
It's quite possible that in the vastness of the universe other species just haven't found us yet. Or they have and look down on us as mere savages compared to them.

"Ok serious post now . Do you believe that we are the only life force in the universe or have you seen a UFO??"
Don't understand the false dichotomy ?
Statistically it is nigh on inevitable that there are other systems that humans could define as life forms within an infinite cosmos
Not sure why knowing unidentified objects are seen daily has any bearing on the question of other life forms ?
I understand statistically the probability that even one of currently unidentifiable objects harbours a life form not from this planet is extremely non plausible
As for identifiable rock objects floating around, I think it plausible that a tiny proportion of a vast number could harbour a rudimentary form of life |

My understanding of this, based on talking to some smart friends with an intellect VASTLY greater than mine is that
1. Life the way we know it is a statistically extremely low probability event (1 in billions type of numbers)
2. Given the vastness of space the probability is close to 100% that there's life out there somewhere
3. The interstellar distances are too vast for paths to cross easily. So yes if there were living Martians we'd probably see them but anything few galaxies away are really really far
4. There's something called the Fermi something (?paradox) which says that alien civilizations destroy themselves before they become capable of traveling in space so we don't see them. That sounds familiar
Confirmed atheist here, religion is all man made as far as I am concerned, designed to control the rest |

We are not alone, but Aliens will never visit.
Even the most advanced propulsion theories involve it taking a generation or two to travel huge distances.
If you reach this stage you have a couple of big problems ahead of you. You need to 1, secure the survival of your species through gigantic space missions to near stars/galaxy.
Traveling any further will raise ethical issue.
Any species that advanced will see forcing a whole generation to be born in transit as slavery. It's one thing for parents to step up to do it, but the children will be seen as slaves. So it will likely never happen.
Any species that advanced will assume life is peppered all over the place, they wont need "proof".
Why send 3/6 generations of people into space to a blue dot just so they can say "yeah we were right".
At this stage they will have much much much bigger projects on their books. They will view resources spent to confirm life as wasted, and will have likely found bacteria/virus on other planets anyway. If they are really really lucky they may have a planet with evolved life close, otherwise they wont bother. |

There was once an estimated 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe. Each star has an average of 20 planets in its orbit.
You think we’re alone?..... |

Nearly. The Fermi paradox is the theory that alien life is so far advanced that we just couldn't comprehend it. It would be like trying to teach quantum physics to an ant. And to an alien species, we are the ant. We're completely insignificant to them, in the way that you would pass an ant on the street and not even acknowledge its existence. |

I would guess that is correct in some cases . However as stars and planets have evolved at different times I would theorise that there is life forms far more primitive than ourselves as well . |

That's 2 questions. Is there other life in the universe? Probably.
Is there life with the abilty to fly a spaceship to earth? Probably not. |

"We can't be surely, with so many solar systems out there, there must be other lifeforms. Whether we ever discover them is another matter."
This
We’d be rather up our collective selves to assume we’re the only life forms in existence anywhere ever.
Let’s hope they’re doing a better job than we are |

Given the size of the universe, I think it's very likely there is life of some sort elsewhere.
Yes, I have seen a UFO ... I do not believe it was alien, but I have no idea what it was.

You got stats on all the other planets out there then?
And what if life had developed else where that survived on a different mix of gases? Under different pressures etc etc? What says other environments won't won't develop different types of life? Something that works entirely differently to life as we know it.
All we know is exactly that, what we know. Don't bee so vein as to assume us humans are clever enough to see all ends |
