What did you want to be when you grew up?? Did you achieve your goal??

I has 2. First I always wanted to be a soldier because of my grandads stories of ww2. My other one was briefly wanting to be a astronaut as I've always loved space but once I found out that I'd need to go into the raf I decided that I didn't want to do it.

I wanted to go in the RAF from age 5 to 30 and couldn't achieve it due to breaking my neck ... still gutted about it to this day

My first ambition at the age of 5 was to work in a butchers shop, achieved that a couple of weeks before my 14th birthday. My other ambition was to join the RAF and I achieved that aged 19.

Only one other thing I’ve ever wanted in life and sadly very unlikely to happen but I’ve grown to accept it now.

I had always wanted to be a cartoonist/comic book artist.

I even ran my own web-comic for a while.

It never paid the bills though.

I wanted to be a "library lady" mostly because of the stamp which of course no longer exists in the modern technological age. Didn't do that but have ended up with a home very like a library, crammed with books!

I wanted to join the police but my eyesight was too bad, even corrected. When I was first applying (more than 30 years ago) they wouldn't consider you if you had corrective eye surgery either as it was still in its infancy and the long term effects weren't clear. I think I tried just about every force I could but got the same response from them all.

Later, I would have loved to have attempted an academic career after graduating but my personal circumstances changed around then and blew that one too

I'm not sure what the requirements are now but it always used to be that you could only be sight impaired up to a certain level. Beyond that it'd be a no, I guess because even if you could see perfectly well with glasses or lenses there'd be a risk you'd be left floundering if they were knocked off (or out).

I had six things I could see myself being when I grew up. The first five were a librarian, an author, a criminal pathologist, a composer or a barrister. One involved studying the sciences and medicine so I discounted that pretty early on and kept the rest of my options open. As a result I ended up being the sixth (unlisted) thing and still manage to dabble in a couple of the others - in a house full of books.

There and to the left a bit

From a very early age I wanted to join the forces and by 10 or 11 that had become the Navy - went to Sea Cadets which I loved and then for the Admiralty Interview Board to enter officer training - failed that and was advised to join as a sailor and work my way up which I did about a year later.

Sailed through basic training with flying colours - started my specialist training and a series of circumstances led to me being unhappy and deciding to leave after only 2-3 months in - still one of the biggest and stupidest mistakes of my life 35 years later!!

I had 2 ambitions as a child: to be an air hostess, and to be a mum myself one day.

I achieved one of the two and have a job that is family friendly to fit on around my child, never got to be an air hostess!

I wanted to be in the RAF and work on fast jets. I did 12 years, made rank of seargeant and took voluntary redundancy in 2007.

I wanted to continue working with aircraft and I still miss it but there is nothing near me that suits so I now design power stations.

It is what it is - although the reality is the eyesight factor aside (which only blocked one path) the other Navy related issues would all have disappeared with 3-4 weeks if I'd stayed, as I'd have moved onto the next part of my training and away from those issues - 17 year old me couldn't see that and thought he knew better though.

However they find out I was color blind and had Tourettes so that put that Goal to bed straight away !.

Found out though I could design systems so I did and we all use them today .. Not quite the Space goal but I can deal with that

I’d swap everything I have (apart from my hubby of course) and everything I’ve achieved in life to be able to have kids!

My unfulfilled desire is to have children. Unfortunately, 13 years of recurrent miscarriage, intermittent unexplained secondary infertility, removal of a third of my cervix due to cancer and my age now have pretty much put paid to that ever happening.

I would be a vengeful slayer of the bad guys.

Actually worked out fine, although it's long hours with poor holiday allowance.

"I was and still am ambitionless. I became a Midwife in my 30's because it just happened and when asked I always say that life took me there and most of my achievements were borne from necessity.

I never thought nursing/midwifery could be anything other than a calling. I do stand corrected. So you have never had a dream to have a certain career?

M"

Not one. I am a Midwife to the core, it's who I am and I'm grateful that I was led to it by something outside my control.

I don't plan or aspire to anything as I'm happy single and very skint. I chose to get rid of my car, live in a small apartment and earn enough to get by.

I adore my life.

Well a cyborg bad guy slayer sounds pretty bad ass if you ask me.

If your happy then that's all that matters. As my dad used to say it's not a lot but it's my lot in life.

I wanted to be a pilot too. But like another poster here could never afford it.

Then I started training for my ppl for fun not as a job. My son caught the same bug. I stopped flying to pay for his ppl. He passed his ppl before his driving test. But everything he does melts my heart and makes me proud of him.

I sort of gave up on that dream and used to fly with him I still do. But it's addictive... now finally I am training for my ppl.

It's been a long time a long wait..but sometimes dreams do come true...

Congratulations. A lot of people these days are to self absorbed in their own lives and wants to put others including family first. Glad you are now getting to realise your dream also.

"Oasis - D'yer Wanna Be a Spaceman

I haven't seen your face round

Since I was a kid

You're bringing back those memories

Of the thing that we did

You're hangin round

And climbing trees

Pretending to fly

D'Yer wanna be a spaceman

And live in the sky

I don't actually remember wanting to be something specific as a child...

but found a job that I love now which is stressful enough to get my lazy bum moving, meeting lots of the most interesting people, never boring or the same in a daily basis and allows me to be as mad as I naturally am. I think i am really lucky that way.

Pilot was and still is my dream job. And I am yet to achieve it as life forces choices and I chose time with family over my dream job. However, my life now permits me to chase that dream which is why I’m taking the first step towards it.

Worst case scenario you can become one of the tomorrow people with a bottle of tequila. Drink it then all of a sudden you’ve teleported across london and have a random outfit on with your collar unbuttoned

Some people don't and are lucky to fall into a career that is both suitable and fun/enjoyable for them.

My dad chose to keep food on the table and a warm place for us to live over his dream job for years. Wasn't till he got made redundant he was able to retrain and get his dream job. Family shouldn't have to be the most important factor but it always is. I was lucky to be married to my perfect wife who was happy for me to run around being at war. As long as I had my will upto date (seems morbid but she was thinking logically for the kids etc) she had no problems with me being in the army.
