I believe there are a few good Indian restaurants....

I know that sound crazy but I'm sure if you ask a taxi driver they will be able to find one....

Depends what sort of thing your liking for. I really like bank, a restaurant in brindley place which is near where you are staying. If you want to go high end there's Marco Pierre whites restaurant?

Broad street is not really a great place for drinking. Think Blackpool or benedorm?

There used to be an upmarket department store called Rackems ......

When I was young my parents abandoned me in Birmingham ,,,,,, I was looked after by an elderly Aunt and Uncle it was great ,,,,,,

One day the took me to Rackem to dine in one of Rackems fancy restaurants

My Aunt took me to the haberdashery department where she wanted to by some undergarments ....

I was stunned to find the store had a dedicated titty expert .... there were women with there paps out everywhere.....

One that day I had my first erection

The Arcadian has lots of Cantonese and Chinese restaurants and some of the best night life.

It’s a 10 minute walk from Brindley.

We have had some great nights in there and you are right next to the gay quarter which also has some great bars.

If you locate the nearest Cafe Rouge it’ll bring you to the canal area of Brindly Place, it’s a nice setting with a few other restaurants there too. Definitely worth a try.

As already stressed, avoid Broad Street like the plague. Brindley Place is a LITTLE better, it's still full of wankers but they're less inclined to glass each other. Decent boozers in town include The Victoria, The Cosy Club, Sugarloaf at Bodega (if it's open, it's sometimes closed for private bookings) Purecraft Bar & Kitchen (better known as Pure Bar. Pricey, but EXCELLENT beer selection. Amazing sausage rolls) if you want cocktails, the best in town are at Bourne & Co, followed by Lost & Found (but service there is sloooooooow) and The Bureau. Marmalade at the Rep also mix a decent cocktail but it's not really a big night out kinda spot. Gingers is very swanky but the cocktails are all too sickly sweet for me these days, and Island Bar is the staple if you want to drink cocktails and dance to funky DJs. If you're prepared to venture a little way out of the city centre, I much much MUCH prefer drinking in the Jewellery Quarter. Rose Villa Tavern is where I like to start out, then when it gets late I head to The Church to get thoroughly sauces and dance like an idiot. But there's a few good pubs and bars in the area, mostly independent places, and there's loads of trendy boozers around St Paul's Square (if you like gin, 40 St Paul's is an absolute MUST visit. You'll have to book a table though, which I'd urge you to do without delay, it's the hottest spot in Brum)

If heavy metal, sticky floors and headbanging are your thing; Flapper & Firkin, Scruffy Murphys or the newly opened Hammer & Anvil. Or you could wander into digbeth and try Subside, but it's not my favourite spot.

If we're out on a pub crawl in Birmingham, most of these feature on our list. Jekyll and Hyde too but is a little out the way also Bacchus bar but can get busy.

Yeah, Jekkyl & Hyde is a groovy spot. Used to be a right shithole when it was the Queens Head, due to it's proximity to the courts and Steakhouse Lane nick. Popular with the nurses from over the road now, so might be a good spot if the OP doesn't have a lady friend with him.

Haven't been in Bacchus for YEARS. Decades, probably. Used to go there as a teenager, we'd have brandy and cigars in the leather wingback chairs and act like we weren't comprehensive kids trying to get pissed on a tenner...

As far as food is concerned, there's a LOT to choose from, so it depends what you're after. If you want something a little more high end, Purnell's Bistro is brilliant if you can get a reservation, or Bistro @ Hotel du Vin is really REALLY nice (the Sunday lunch is unreal, if you're still around tomorrow) Bank, as mentioned, is pretty good for steak and oysters in a seriously trendy setting (first time I went it was amazing, second time was unremarkable) and decent cocktails. There's a lot of fine-dining to choose from, and a good handful of Michelin star restaurants, but you're never going to get a table at this notice. Give Marco Pierre White a miss, it's overpriced and mediocre, and got shut down by environmental health a couple of years ago for achieving a zero food hygiene rating. If you have a lady to impress, it's worth popping up for a glass of a champagne though, the decor is very swanky and the views are awesome. (Also, the bar at Rofutu at the top of the Park Regis hotel at Five Ways has a similar panoramic effect, and better drinks. Good food too, but pricey)

If you want a LOT of meat for a reasonable price in a much more relaxed setting, you've got Smoke Haus in Brindley Place (I really like it there. Good grub, good beers, good whiskeys, and you can control the impressively stocked jukebox with your phone via the website) and Rub Smokehouse on Broad Street. The latter has arguably a better menu (the fried pickles are awesome, but if you order hot wings and they say "do you want them Hot or Insane" do NOT say insane unless you really really mean it!) But when I went, pretty much every single customer was on a LOT of cocaine, which makes for a fucking weird restaurant environment. Nosh & Quaff in Victoria square has a similar relaxed buzzing vibe, and specialises in Lobster and Ribs.

If you want a solid reliable chain restaurant, there are lots of Pizza Express (Brindley Place is the best one, the Bullring is pretty good too) a Cafe Rouge as mentioned, loads of chain eateries in the Mailbox and a Jamie's Italian in the Bullring. (I like the Jamie's, book if you can though)

There are loads of ethnic eateries, too many to list without knowing what you might fancy, and some decent "Gastro Pub" type affairs. (The Church Inn does awesome soul food, and proper barbecue courtesy of nearby independent Low & Slow, while Pure Bar's menu was "curated" by local Michelin star chef Glyn Purnell. I've only ever had their delicious bar snacks myself, though)

Really, there's just way too much to choose from. So I'm not really much help...

I dunno if I'm too late to jump back in here, if you've already been to Brum, but:

THE real ale pub in Birmingham is The Wellington. The Post Office Vaults is good too, and a proper old Birmingham basement pub. The Bartons Arms is a cracking historic boozer but a little out of town, as is The Woodman by millennium point. The Wildman is also just round the corner from The Eagle & Tun, where UB40 filmed the Red Red Wine video.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. In the end the people I visited with weren't up for too much moving around so stuck near to the canal round Brindley place. Can recommend the Gin Vault by the canal, along with the Distillery further along the canal. Food wise we stuck to chain restaurants sadly apart from a visit to Tamatanga, a fantastic modern Asian restaurant, esp the Thali.
