Maybe, but I cannot but help notice that many defenders of the status quo are women themselves.
I think of us are individualists here, far from content with accepting societal norms and being put into boxes.
There's a lot of hypocrisy, but it's not down to us to change the way other people think, you can only do that to yourself.
The kind of thing that is annoying you, which also annoys me, is the 'compartmentalisation' that goes on with people's perspectives on sex. e.g. Being homosexual is a personal choice, but swinging is a disgusting lifestyle. It's not wrong to have an opinion. Some people will never like homosexuals. Some people will always judge other people's sexual proclivities whatever they are. It IS wrong to press them onto other people. That's what tolerance is about.
Tolerance is a liberal virtue. The ability to respect other people even though you don't necessarily agree with them. That, in my opinion makes Western culture superior to some other cultures. That in turn is an opinion, it doesn't mean I hate or disrespect those cultures, only that I disagree with their perspective. And that's fine, it's the only way the human race is ever going to get along with each other. |
