Has anyone ever read a book or series that they couldn't bare to finish because they knew the ending it would bother then?
20 pages from the end of a series that I've been an avid reader of for 10+ years and just don't want to get to the end. Odd |

Yes often, some books really have a massive effect on your feelings, I read a book called the Stoner Eagles many many years ago and I've re read it many times since...
Terry Pratchett has also been a long time favourite for me and I'm still sad there will be no more... X |

Many, many times. The thing with book characters is that a good writer makes them exist in our heads. So when we can't 'hear' them anymore when the written words stop it's like losing touch with a friend. Until we pick them up a year or so later and remember who they were all over again. |

Perfectly put
There are a couple of series I read where the lead characters have got under my skin to the point they almost seem like fictional friends.
What's even worse is when they make a much loved book into a film or TV series and the actor they choose is absolutely nothing like the character you've imagined. |

Oh this is so true. I recently started reading Lee Childs ,he writes about Jack reacher, for those who don't know he's a 6'5" 250 llb giant, so why oh why did they pick Tom Cruise to play him in the movies....
I've looked into why and apparently Tiny Tom was the best actor for the job...

Oh yes. And much missed Terry Pratchett is probably at the top of my list. But I re-read frequently and am really looking forward to the Good Omens production. |

I read those too and have tried to read them in sequence but it’s not always been possible. Love Kinsey and I’m putting off reading the last few books cos I know I will miss her |

I had that with Mark Billingham's "Tom Thorne" series - much as I love David Morrissey as an actor, he just didn't match my image of the character and in a way it ended up detracting not just from the TV series but my enjoyment of the books too. |

I was devastated when I finished The Wheel of Time. I spent over ten years with those characters, when I had the last book I didn't want to finish it. It felt like the end of a huge part of my life. |

I don't want the Song of Fire and Ice series to end (the books upon which the Game of Thrones TV show is based for the uninitiated).
'Luckily' it's looking increasingly unlikely that George R R Martin is ever going to finish the remaining books and if that turns out to be the case then I guess I'll get that wish |

Lots of books have touched me in many different ways but it's usually been more about the journey the story and how it ends. Sometimes even rereading them the impact is just as powerful but can't think of any didn't want to end.
Some though the endings linger with you, like The Road post apocalypse story that ends with a sense of desperation.
Much older but with a similar impact at the end is Jude... Thomas Hardy...not his usual rural idyll but harsh unforgiving and for that probably a far more real version of the despair of the poor and disenfranchised as so many people were forced off the land and left homeless and bereft by the changes in agriculture practice.

"Thomas Hardy...not his usual rural idyll
Usual rural idyll? Thomas Hardy? That's made me laugh, thank you. "
A closet Hardy fan?...
His house is the most amazingly atmospheric place. Pretty much the same as it was 200 years ago hidden down a track thatched with open fires and surrounded by a cottage garden.
It really is Far from the Madding Crowd... |

Yes, this happens to me every so often. It's only happened once where I actively chose not to finish a book because of it.
There was a book once that I absolutely loved for the story and the characters. I heard there was a sequel, so I looked it up to see if it was worth buying. Turns out the story was completely different to the original and the characters acted totally differently. Apparently the author wanted to make a statement about a very touchy subject and used the characters from the previous novel to make it. Everyone who reviewed it said how sad it was that she ruined the characters. I didn't read it.
I'm more character driven than plot driven so this stuff bugs me. |

I found that with the American author Marilynne Robinson, should never have written a sequel |

While I love an author's style of story telling, I usually find that most get a three book deal and by the third (trilogy or stand alone storylines) it's a bit too stretched out and not as good but not with all author's.
I get character attached and have found myself worrying about some but was so upset reading Tuesdays with Morrie as you know from the start that he isn't going to make it. I was sobbing by time I got to the end like a friend had passed.

I do like a bit of Jack Reacher, but they'll never end as Lee Child basically just re-uses the same story every time...
Someone dies, Reacher fights some low level bad guys and WINS, Reacher gets the lady and WINS, Reacher uses some cunning intellect and WINS, Reacher saves the world and WINS.
What's not to like!
Tom Cruise was a piss poor choice for sure. I'll never watch the movie |
