Who does it and why?
I'm single, live 5 minutes away from work in the car. My normal hours are Monday to Friday, 6am till 2pm. Easy peasy job driving forklift. Company is busy as hell so overtime on offer 24/7.
I get bored at home, so I got used to the idea of going into work to earn some cash, instead of staying at home bored, playing with my nuts (hehe) just finished a 13 hour night shift, of which 5 of them were overtime at time and a half. Then Friday night.. extra 13 hours at time and a half. Plus at least 30 hours every week at time and a half whilst we are busy. Coming up to black Friday and Xmas will be even busier. Tbh the money does not bother me, I am single (divorced) My living costs are very low, no loans or HP. Just money in the bank for when I pop my clogs for my son. I'm done with relationships after 2 divorces. Work just keeps me sane. I love my job and the guys I work with. The extra cash is just the icing on the cake. |

I'm the opposite.
I've cut my hours down to the bare minimum that I can afford.
I never work weekends or early mornings or late nights.
It's all about having time for myself.
I love having spare time to do the things I enjoy!
Fuck the money - life is short. |

I'm salaried so I don't get overtime, but I'll get cash if I do extra stuff, something I don't mind doing because I work for a small firm and get on well with the bossman.
I'm a permaworker and I'm quid hungry so I'll do extras plus a few 'sidelines' when the opportunity arises.
I used to do regular overtime, usually 4 hours a day plus 6 on a Saturday, the job was good craic and extra coin is always nice. |

When I first met hubby he used to do ridiculous amounts of overtime. Not only did it stop him getting bored at home alone, he needed to do a certain amount extra each week in order to pay the bills as his contract is only part time.
After I moved in he cut back the amount of extra hours he was working but still work a some overtime as his employer won't give people full time contracts these days. I guess it saves them a little money in holiday and sick pay to have people on less hours but working overtime every single week.
I have recently changed job and cut down from 42 hours a week to just 25 and I love it! My new job pays a higher hourly rate so I'm earning a similar amount. As well as less hours, I no longer have to work weekends too. I couldn't be happier As for overtime, I may do a few hours if they ask me but I don't think I'll do a lot |

"No overtime for me so I only tend to do my 7 hours
I do have work phone with me that i look at up till about 8pm but then I fully switch off "
I used to work for a large us multinational who expected us to work more hours than the usual 9 to 5.30.
Now that said company is my client and I don’t get paid for working for them as I get salaried I leave when I think I should as long as the work is done |

I only work 12 hours a week. I'm a full time carer for my mum and I choose to work part time to give me a little break from the caring.
Being a full time carer is socially isolating. By working part time in a supermarket it means I get to speak to people other than my mum.
From a financial point of view I'm probably worse off working part time when you take into account the fact I now have to pay for my prescriptions, dental treatment, opticians etc.
Money isn't everything. |
