So it looks like I've agreed to do a 30 mile charity walk next year. I have 6 - 7 months to get ready and currently do nothing.
My offer of support has fallen through so any advice would be most welcome
(and yes I have been on google but hoping for pratical advice and support) |

Well done for volunteering.. Is this walk done all in one go or spread over 2 or more days? Is it on road/track or off road? What's the terrain like? Flat, hilly etc?
I'm no expert but done a few long distance walks and can say that road/track walking will hurt more than walking on grass.
The right footwear is Paramount and will depend on the terrain.
Take proper blister plasters with you.
Have a look at your local ramblers club, they grade their walks from easy to hard etc, they're usually a good few hours long and you will meet new people doing it. |

If you were down this way would say I'd join you for some training walks. I did 26 miles for charity a while back, it was brilliant.
If you look online you should be able to find a training plan. Gradually build up, get suitable boots/shoes and kit and wear it in during training.

See if there is a local hiking group.
My local one do various types of walks and some really rack up the distances, good way to socialise and pick up any tips from the more experienced walkers |

If you work, then simply walk to work from home if achievable, if not walk and then take bus or train..
Good luck |

Thanks all.
Its apparently a mix of paths, grass and sand in North Wales. My plan is to increase my activity over the next couple of weeks before even attempting a training plan. Fingers crossed! |

Pooch and I are happy wanderers in the hills and countryside of North Wales.
My top tip is get some decent socks and boots . Wear them in , start with short walks and build up distance over time
The most important thing is to just enjoy being out in the open
Good luck x x x |

I'm a hiker. I would suggest looking on the Ramblers website and finding your local group. You can do 3 walks before you have to join but even then it's very cheap. Most groups won't do 30 miles but you can use their knowledge and you might even find a walking buddy.
You could also put in some miles before a group walk and then join a Sunday morning walk for the last however many miles they're doing.
A lot of the groups are also on Meetup.

our gp practise have a regular walk day with various members of staff to promote exercise - they do a short walk and a longer walk - the local pharmacies are joining in as well - as much as i dont like it or use it that much fb might be a good starting place to ask friends en masse |
