I know this thread will not be for everyone , but for those who do follow our National football team, what are your views on what's wrong. We are disgraceful, Why isn't it working, why are we so bad when the player's can do it week in week out for their clubs. |

They've not looked likely to win a tournament since 196. But the fans treat them likrle heros and the media hype them as favourites. This is the natural culmination of that because tge players believe the hype.
The premir league's insistence on buying in overseas talent is a massive part of the issue too |

Because we're seeded we usually get weak groups to qualify from which means no test for the two years till the tournament starts.
Our players aren't always the best ones in their club teams e.g
Kane is very good, Eriksson dictates play.
Historically, Stevie G was good, Alonso controlled the game.
We're not rubbish - there's a handful of teams that are better.
The Dutch won't qualify and maybe neither will Argentina...so things aren't as bleak as they could have been.
Hopefully we get to QF or SF.... |

England get tested just about every game when they shouldn't really.
last night being an example.
I think the rankings put England at 15th in the world. I know that isn't much and probably ignored by the bookies but that's more than a handful of teams being better than England.
Ignore the rankings for now and list this handful of teams who are better.
Then go and check the list out. |

With 'Money' do you think it is refering to the fact that players get paid far less for England games than they do for the premier team games? Maybe the modern players don't care as much as they used to about playing for their country as they do getting paid as much as possible? I'm not saying this is the case just a thought? and probably not all players but enough of them to make a difference. |

I don't know if we get tested - we get bored playing teams who tried hard to avoid defeat.
We won't play a top team till the tournament.
I suspect out of the 15, we could beat Poland, Switzerland, Peru and Wales.
There's a few that are probably on our level such as Colombia and Chile in that they'll do okay but usually come up short.
The typical big footballing nations haven't changed much.
Belgium have a super team but don't do amazingly well in tournaments.
Overall, I think we're a top 10 nation |

I'd like to think so but I'm sure you don't get paid to play International football. (At least in the uk)"
Do they I didn't know that? I got this from google if it's true?
England Euro 2012 players match fee : English FA made a structured fee formula where they where paying players who where part of playing XI, £1500 for a win, £1000 for a draw and £750 for a defeat. This pay is way less than what top players get from their club. |

It never used to be like that but the press and media fucked it.

I’m pretty sure England players donate there match salaries to charities.
England in recent years really struggle to breakdown so called lesser teams but seem to have a knack of holding their own against the bigger teams. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were to get a result against Germany or Brazil in their next two games.
Another issue is Southgate. After the embarrassment that was Allardyce the FA have gone with the boring safe option when there is far better out there. The England team will never do anything of note until we restructure the stuffy fat cats running the show. |

The money is fuck all to them if those figures are correct and not an excuse either.
It's the highest platform to play on. It has to be technical ability, application of a task, a bit of luck perhaps, etc etc it can't be because of a measly bonus when your club are giving you £80k a week wether your with them that week or England. |

I agree with you playing for your country shouldn't be about money at all. I was trying to give some sort of answer as to why someone said 'Money'.
Maybe it's because the current England are just not world class and constantly blaming the England manager all the time doesn't help? As someone else said the world class players that play in our premiership are foreigners. |

It's not. Congratulations on reaching the WC finals. I hope England put on a great show for their fans and it's a safe tournament.
Hopefully it'll be a realistic competition and due to that the team might flourish and throw a few suprises.
Huge game for us tonight, if we can't make it and both Irelands do I wish all three home nations every success.

Best league in the world they tell us.
Why not the best team then?
That's where a big chunk of the answer lies I think. |

I also think there has been a lot of bad luck, stupid mistakes that have cost England over the years. It's almost a curse. Hand of God, Phil Neville penalty vs Romania (I think), Beckham vs Argies, Rooney vs Argies, Seaman from the half way line and so on.
But then in football you hear 'you earn your luck' quite a lot.
Obviously it's not just luck but England have had their share of the bad kind as I've grown up watching them. |

Look at the premier league teams .see how many English players they've all got .some don't even have one playing . the FA don't care about England .all they are bothered about is the premier league .the few English players there are all think they are much better than they really are .In the present set up England will never ever win the world cup again . the whole structure has to change .get back to the grass roots of soccer and start again.start nurturing home grown talent . .these friendlies are a total waste of time .back in the 60s and70s all international games meant something .not now .until the FA come out of their trance England will remain also rans . they'll be lucky to get out of group stages in Russia . thats the reality |

Lack of commitment is a major issue. Money is what's killing the team with most of the players more worried about losing their position in their team through injury, thus having lower chance of a bigger contract. |

We have some great club players but teams use a majority of international players. We have few home grown players talented enough to play in the big European sides unless they can bring big media too, which tells you: we aren't good enough and they have a better domestic choice.
When a club can reject a £120m transfer as a player is under priced, it tells you the game has never been more about money and advertising. One man doesn't make a team. |

"We have one outstanding player in Rashford. He will one day be as good as Bale and Ronaldo.
We have plenty of young players with potential but only one future superstar at present. "
Portugal won the Euros with one superstar and he spent most of the final picking moths out of his arse. Yes they help but more importantly it's what is around your superstar.
We miss Rambo as much as Bale but yet Bale gets the headlines.
You can only be successful with a team rather than a few worldies.
Belgium and Iceland are great examples, for all the names Belgium have they play as individuals.
Iceland have 1 outstanding player who dosent play for one of the big boys (no offence Everton) and the rest are scattered around Europe in the top two tiers and yet what you have are 11 +subs all playing as a team.
As per Northern Ireland.
It's all about The Team |

Spot on. Too many average foreign players at clubs not giving the British players/youngsters the real chance. There's a piece on bbc site about the minutes the young players are getting in the top leagues. Awful reading for the English.
I've always thought this, need to cap the amount per/club |

I'm sure the rule was X2 before the 'Bosman' ruling came in.
You could argue England didn't win anything then aswell.
I'm sure it is a big factor but as mentioned, other teams who have players from the top two European leagues in other countries often/have recently progress further.

Largely because vast majority of players in premiership arent English I believe. That and the fact that they are vastly, overpaid and with so much smoke blown up their arses on a regular basis that they believe they are better than they are !! |

The FA should create another league where all the U21s play, in amongst the usual Saturday stuff and allow promotion and relegation from there.
League 3.
Extremely unfair on the non league teams fighting to get into League two but it's probably a bigger challenge than what's on offer now.
It would never get voted in and say for eg Man Utd u21s sit top of the Championship in 5/6 years time is it actually helping UK football? I doubt it but Spain and France for eg would be rubbing their hands at what we are producing for them.
It should in theory benifit all home nation national teams but again the desire for instant success would kick in.

Having just got back from Lithuania and watching the utter dross that is England all I have to say is we are not good enough. We have a decent CF in Kane and a good No. 10 in Alli but others who play are just not good enough. Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cresswell, Livermore and Smalling plus others would get nowhere near a decent international side.
The basic answer to “What’s wrong with England?” is we have a manager who didn’t want the job, is not good enough to have the job and players who are just not up to scratch. |

you'll get nowhere with them two in midfield, - it's like playing with two holding midfielders.
All those 'fans' who slagged of the best player whom made things happen, Wilshire, must be feeling pretty stupid right now! |

"I really would have liked to have seen what Big Sam could have done.
What...big corrupt fat Sam? What position would you play him in?
Erm, manager."
Thing is, Sam had his chance, made a huge error of judgement and blew it!
Southgate needs to be more decisive. A few months ago it looked like he had a good team. They controlled the game well, won the ball back almost instantly when they lost it and, there was good positive forward play. Sometimes there were even moments of imaginative and inspirational football. They were still struggling to break down teams that played more defensively but that's always difficult. It looked like he had a team to work on and iron out any of the down sides that existed but, he didn't stick with it. He keeps chopping and changing the players not giving them a chance of any consistency or a chance to gel. He's like a kid in a sweet shop that can't make his mind up. it's nice to have the choice...but 30 different players since he's been in charge when he seemed to have a good team months ago. We seem to have gone backwards since then instead of building on what we had!
Any way, I am happy we have qualified, it may not have been pretty or exciting but, we have a good clean sheet. I'm looking forward to the next couple of friendlies. He still has time to put a good team together. Lets hope he does it soon and then sticks with it so they get a chance to bond properly on the pitch. |

I blame the premier league and the FA, less English players playing in every team in premier league. There should be a control how many international players can play in starting 11. Say only 4 overseas player and rest English player, then that will give more opportunity for English players to play together and get experience and more talent will come out and selection will be hard for the player and no one will take it for granted thinking they will be in the team anyway.

I'm not sure which thread I mentioned it on but I'm sure before 'Bosman' the rule was set at X2.
None of us won anything then.
As a Cardiff fan we'd drop to league 2 if we had to field a minimum of 9 Welsh lads. |
