Thats the great thing about Glastonbury, lots of diverse acts, something for everyone, been a few times and if dont like headline act, went to different stage or other place for entertainment within the festival. Chemical brothers 2000 has to be my best memory from Glastonbury , one of many |

Not exactly on topic, but many years ago saw U2 at the Hammersmith Odeon,,,and the Waterboys were the support act. They were not getting much of a response from the audience for which they quipped "don't worry we are nearly finished "  |

Used to be a pub in Birmingham called The Barrel Organ. Saw Radiohead there first time supporting Frank and Wlters, second time supporting Sultans of Ping. Personally I thought they were shit, an opinion I've never really changed, but given the level of successthey went on to I guess most people would have said that they were better! |

Used to go to the Barrellorgan a lot saw some good bands there back in the 80s

Much as I hate to say it (as I love the headliner and have seen them 50 plus times) but saw Ian Dury on the support bill for a Madness outdoor gig back in 98 and he was far better on the day |

I remember seeing 10cc at Portsmouth guildhall in the early 80s. I can't remember who the support were, but I do remember they were Swedish or Norwegian. Far better than the headline act. Came away very disappointed. |

Brand New Heavies were the lead act but the support artist was Omar a far more interesting musician with more musicality than BNH's ripped off funk riffs. |

I agree, having first gone around 1990 the line up has become increasingly mainstream and very much designed for TV
And fair play to Eavis, what he has achieved is pretty impressive but I must admit it appeals less and less these days. |

I saw take that live and they were brilliant. Really good performers.however, the script were their support band and for my music taste they were superior. Gary go was there too and he really set the atmosphere for them both, plus he stood with us during the other performances and had a chat. |

Went to see The Committments, supported by local lads The Chip Shop Boys.
Chippies were good - Committments were pants. Only 2 members (guitarists), from the original lineup. |

I went to see Paul Weller play at the Sands Centre in Carlisle a few years ago, where he had '+ special guests' on the billboard as his support. When Noel Gallagher walked on stage just him and his acoustic guitar, the place went wild. Mr Weller was a bit of an anti-climax after that |

I saw them at Birmingham uni but Richie was still around so must have been earlier than 96? Amazing live band in those days

No this was on the 'Everything Must Go' tour and they were going through the motions big time. They were really patchy as a live band for a good few years after Richey went, they obviously struggled with it in many ways. they've been amazing every time i've seen them over the last 10 years though.

No this was on the 'Everything Must Go' tour and they were going through the motions big time. They were really patchy as a live band for a good few years after Richey went, they obviously struggled with it in many ways. they've been amazing every time i've seen them over the last 10 years though.

I saw them play Carlisle Sands Centre on that tour, and they absolutely rocked! Probably the best gig I ever saw there |

I would say at most festivals the headline acts are generally below par. Not always but mostly.
Aside from that I can't say I have seen a support band blow a headliner away where I have gone specifically to see the headliner.
I have gone to gigs where a band I like are the support act and of course they are the stand out for me. Not sure that counts as I wasn't expecting much from the headliner. |

I think your memory might be playing tricks there. Leppard were already headlining the Assembly Rooms by 1980. I saw them support AC/DC the year before and Sammy Hagar the same year but don't recall them ever supporting Maiden. |

At Portsmouth Guild Hall, Tears for Fears were playing their The Hurting tour and were really good, but were surpassed by The Adventures, who just put out Theodore and Friends. This band were unbelievable, made me a follower for the rest of their career. Personal favorite song from that album, Love in chains. |

Somewhere around 1984 I went to my first gig. UB40 at Wembley Arena.
We didn't take much notice of the unknown support act, they were white lads doing lots of hardcore Reggae stuff and the lead singer had this wild ginger hair.
Everyone was getting bored.
Until their last number, which bought the house down ......
