Its a classic dilemma..
A runaway trolley car is hurtling down a track where it will kill five people..
You are standing on a bridge above the track and, aware of the imminent disaster, you decide to jump on the track to block the trolley car.. Although you will die, the five people will be saved.
Just before your leap, you realise that you are too light to stop the trolley..
Next to you, a fat man is standing on the very edge of the bridge..innocently daydreaming and unaware of the situation.. He would certainly block the trolley, although he would undoubtedly die from the impact..
A small nudge and he would fall right onto the track below..
No one would ever know..you pushed him..thats certain..
So the question is ...do you push him ?
Sacrifice this innocent man, to save 5 others ?
Its a dilemma, thats still causes great dispute within philosophy...
The greater good comes first...
The end justifies the means..
Or...the moral right is always the imperative..regardless of consequences...
So which camp do you fall in..
Just a fun thing...hopefully...no argueing...its still blooming Thursday after all.. |

I couldn't take a life, so I couldn't or rather wouldn't push the fat guy onto the track.
I wouldn't sacrifice myself to save 5 strangers as that would also deprive my family of my exsistance.
I would have to let the accident happen. I could live with the consequense because it was something beyond my control.
I couldn't live with the guilt of killing someone even if it was to save 5 other people. |

I am not brave enough to jump! I am not crass enough to sacrifice someone else. But I couldn't stand and do nothing! If all I could do was shout to warn or throw something inanimate off the bridge, then that is what I would do!
As distinct from those that would say "they are strangers, what has it got to do with me?" |

Smashing answer Jack..
The thing with these dilemmas is you can play around..
What if ..
You know the fat man ...hes got a terminal illness..you know he only has months to live...
And the 5 people are people you know...you`re appalled that you reconise your neighbours children..
You can`t jump...for an unknown reason...
The greater good ? |

I would grab the fat guy and take him with me, thereby shielding him from death, and stopping the trolley as well- simple physics.
And with a bit off luck (and a lot of poetic licence) he would happen to be a fantastically talented surgeon who would then save my life and patch me up too! |

Okee doke......freshen this one up a little if anyone is interested
Just a fun thing again..and its simple as ...
You see a runaway railway trolley careering down a track..heading for 5 people on the line..
Desperate to help you are uncertain what to do...until you notice a lever..
Throwing the lever will divert the railway trolley on to a fork in the track...
On the other fork however is a single person...
So you are faced with a simple choice...let 5 people die, or throw a lever and sacrifice one person to save their lives..
What would you do ?.. |

Ok..heres the deal, as the savvy fuckers will have worked out...
2 scenarios....5 peeps could be saved by sacrificing a person...its kinda greater good shit...
When alot of people were asked, would they throw a lever thereby killing the single peep, and saving the 5 , they mostly had no hesitation...
However, asked if they would push the fucker over a bridge, saving the 5 , most were horrified, and backed away from saving the 5 ..
Tis curious....and still entertains..those it entertains..
Guess, it shows how things can turn, morally on certain things..
So when peeps proclaim....Oh...I would ....you SHOULD....I wonder..
Anyhows..there tis |

I would frisk the fat man to find his secret pie stash and throw both of our pies at the blissfully ignorant dimwits standing around on the track. When they look up to see who has struck the back of their head with a Gregg’s steak bake, I would be able to draw their attention to the runaway trolley car and avert the potential disaster…. though a number of them may still make a claim for compensation due to the rail operator’s neglect in maintaining fences and lack of safety inspections resulting in a carriage breaking loose.
So in answer to the greater good dilemma... yes I would sacrifice my cheese and onion pasty for the greater good! |
