Beards became a status symbol during Henry VIII's reign after he imposed a tax on them thus elevating the wearer's social standing. This was dropped but later reinstated by his daughter to raise funds for the navy.

It's nice to see they're making a comeback, for once i'm feeling a bit fashionable.
