so who did discover america i was taught in history it may not hv been columbus. so i just checked on google and found another name
In 1497, the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci discovered a new country, and it was named America by the map maker, Martin Waldseemuller.
However, it was later realized that Amerigo s friend, the Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus, had been there a few years earlier in 1492. But it was too late to rename the country Columbia.
More recently evidence has appeared showing that in fact it was the Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho who discovered America in 1421.
So who deserves the credit for actually discovering America?
what do you think and what should jt actually be called |

John Cabot landed at Newfoundland in 1497. He is reputed to have been Italian (Giovanni Caboto) but surprisingly Bristol also lays claim to him, but that may be because Bristol was his point of departure for the Americas (even though he didn't know the Americas were there cos it would have already been discovered if he knew where he was going). A replica of his rather small galleon (known as a Matthew) is on permanent display in Bristol Floating Harbour.
Columbus is reputed to have discovered the Americas in 1492, some five years earlier than Cabot.
As for what it should be called: America seems as good a name as any other, why change it now. |

actually the norsemen settled in america long before chris columbus, in fact chris columbus never stepped foot in north america, but ponce de leon did in what is now florida. and of course the original settelers came across the land bridge that extended from siberia to alaska, long before any of them

A few years before any of this....
At the end of 40 days at sea... Mrs Noah had the excrement of all of the animals swept to the stern of the arc... Then had it all thrown into the sea... A thousand or so years later Vespucci rediscovered it...;-) |

"actually lief and his brother red made it as far as gloucester massachusetts."
The irony is Massachuestts is a derivative of the native American name fer the area..
The former a legacy of the Guttenberg printing press..(Gloucester)..
Tis interesting tho..

……. History may well indeed offer differing opinions on who discovered the Americas …..
But perhaps these days I would be seen as prudent to distance ones-self from any association as to who really gave access to the home of messer’s.. G W Bush ,,,, and Sarah Palin etc……
hey,,, now come on !!!… I know there are some good people who live there too….. so don’t shout at me!!!!! |
