A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

Last years celebs are going to be tough to follow with so many being so good. That said there's potential in this year's bunch.

Alexandra Burke looks good in the ballroom, with Joe McFadden trying his best to do a Jay McGuinness in the Jive. Aston needs to lose his inner Michael Jackson when he's supposed to be channeling a Foxtrot, & Debbie McGee should easily be the oldest contestant to go the furthest in this year's class. Daviod from Eastenders reminds me of Mark Wright from a few years back - eye candy that could surprise us by making the final four.

I do miss Len but Shirley has the qualifications & experience to guide the contestants to do better.

All in all... still better than X Factor (if it's still on).

Could be 2008 over again with Alexandra & Aston doing everything to get to the final. Debbie McGee & a few others could be the outsiders giving them a run for their money. Some very good dancing for week 2. How high will the standard be for Halloween Week or Blackpool, let alone the final?

Hands up, I was watching the wrong ‘celebrity’ on Saturday, thinking they were doing well, when it turned out they were the professional, only realising at the end of their dance. it was the actor from East Enders, I think. I came in partway through their dance routine, so hadn’t seen the video just before they started.

Anyone else done this, at this early stage when we might not necessarily know every celebrity yet?

I think it's lost its sparkle. Scraping the barrel on celebrities even by their standard. The leaders are people of musical routine experience and one even taught ballet. Not ballroom but experienced in learning dance moves.

"Yes that is easily done, especially this season, with Alexandra and that Paso doble, my god that was hot! "

Ive been watching her Paso Doble on repeat.

When a celeb has me fixed to their every move (despite a half naked pro dancer) then I’ve got to hand it to her - she has got my vote.

That has to be the most ambitious dance for any show let alone so close to the start of the series.

This series has the potential to feature some of the best “tv moments” of any so far.

(Eat yer hearts out Aleisha Dixon & Jay McGuinness!)

Yes, we have replayed it a few times. She just looked so passionate and really embraced the dance. She's going to be good at ballroom, because of her musicality, but I feel her Latin dances are going to be spetacular. Can you imagine her doing the Argentine tango!

I don’t mind Aston & find him entertaining enough, but too much Michael Jackson/not enough Astaire. If he can drop the “Shamone” moves & inject more Ballroom then we could have a competition. However Debbie McGee has grabbed my attention more than Aston. Older woman vs younger woman finale?

A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

Movie Week:

Another great show this week. A La La Land opening, & a nice pick of some movie greats.

Simon’s Toy Story routine was a little stiff & wasn’t so animated but that probably can be forgiven as he made a fun Buzz Lightyear.

Ruth’s Bond Girl was more Ratner’s than DeVere but she got through it better than some others so she could be safe.

Mollie’s Sound Of Music routine was a delight to watch. This pair is starting to find their feet.

The Rev’s Flash was hilarious. Can’t fault his enthusiasm.

Debbie’s quickstep was a charming Astaire & Rogers tribute. Can an over 50 make the final four again?

Brian’s Wizard Of Oz scarecrow was perfect casting for him. Loved it.

Gemma’s Bagheera & Aljaz’s Baloo routine from my favourite movie. Almost as much fun as the movie.

Charlotte’s Top Gun gets overshadowed by Brendan not getting Shirley’s job as Head Judge. Whatever the office politics Charlotte just isn’t a very good dancer, but she was better than last week. Just.

Jonnie takes on Indiana Jones & just about pulled off a fair Paso.

Susan reversed roles on Wonder Woman & danced the male’s role. One of the night’s highlights.

Joe’s Doctor Zhivago waltz. Good job. A straight forward waltz. Hope it doesn’t get forgotten in so many good dances.

Aston channels his Timberlake for this number from Trolls. Pure fun & got the audience’s support. (I still find him a bit pigeon toed but this was a good showcase for him).

Alexandra’s My Fair Lady was the antithesis Of last week’s jaw dropping routine, but it appears she can handle any dance & pull off a great performance.

Davood’s Saturday Night Fever played to his strengths & a good number to close the show.

A great night of dancing & it will be tough to choose the bottom two as I don’t want to lose anyone but it could be Charlotte & Ruth.

Good write up. I got the wrong name for Brendons partner, Charlotte. I thought she had a better week and I didn't see any rise and fall as Judge Shirley said. If they judge purely on dance ability, I think the Reverend should be one of them in the dance off and the chef

I think when he's doing freestyle type steps, it does appear he can dance, but technically, in ballroom and Latin, he is not so good.

Well Miss Alexandra Burke... you blew me away.

I felt the 10’s were imminent from the change in her face showing she was “in the zone”, the first few steps, & the focus she showed. She was invested in the dance & was throwing everything she had into my it. Her characterisation was spot on & her determination was there from the offset. Way to go.

I also have to give a nod to Gemma, Jonny, Aston & Susan (& their pro dancers) for some great routines & especially Susan for such a fun finale for tonight’s show. Take a bow all of you.

"Was Alexandra the girl who danced like a pro?

Haven't watched much Strictly but I was sneaking a view whilst slaving in the kitchen - & had to wait a fair few seconds to work out that the guy was the pro.

I burnt the jus btw

I would think so, she is a beautiful black girl and was wearing a white dress. Fabulous dancer!

Yeah that was her, - she was so full-on, & as I understood it was totally out of the blue.

9 10 10 10 as far as I can remember, - that was a pretty awesome performance

It was, I can see her winning this year! "

I need to watch it more, - but that was brilliant to watch

I wasn’t a fan of Susan Calman to start with & couldn’t see how she was going to top last week’s Wonder Woman routine, but that was a great number to close the show.

There and to the left a bit

I think it breaks down into three basic groups every year - the duffers, the average but not great and the great.

The duffers usually go first, although there's usually one kept in a while for the comedy value - this year I had money on that being Richard but suspect it may now be Brian Conley.

There's usually one of the average ones goes early on too.

Then there are three or four great ones that will go all the way to the semis or the final - this year I'd say that's Alexandra, Aston and probably Debbie - with maybe Gemma and/or Molly being the other.

"Just bumping this up, Saturday draws nearer!"

Haha, I couldn't believe how far down this thread had got - I had to hunt for it...

Anyway, I want to make a general point about how great Strictly is for "Diversity"...

Ok so dance attracts a fair number of Lesbian, Gay and no doubt Bi celebrities, and always a good mix of foreigners and races.

However, I really must applaud Strictly this year for including Jonnie - as the discussions around his prosthetic is just so normal and positive.

For far too long we've focused on what Disabled People CAN'T do - and I'm glad we're finally put the issue on its head and start talking about what Disabled People CAN do.

A couple of weeks ago, after the spat between spoilt-brat Brendan and judges... to be followed by Jonnie's epic performance - I was moved because that was a total contrast between untalented people who feel "entitled" and humble people who really try and work hard.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

Week 5 roundup.

Davood: The resident hottie for this year he did a good job opening the show. Could make Blackpool but there’s still room for improvements.

Mollie: The “Disney Couple”. These two are gelling now & AJ is bringing the best out of the Saturdays girl.

Simon: Got to hand it to him - he gives it his all. Maybe his timing & technique leave a bit to be desired but clearly loving the show.

Debbie: Topped the Leader Board showing the older woman can still dance & give the younger ones a run for their money.

Brian: Everything suited his character but sadly his Dad Dancing timing was out & it might be his time to go.

Aston: A proper dance from the JLS lad & starting to take it seriously. Nicely done, even though they couldn’t resist a hint of a MJ turn to remind us of Aston’s main dance influence. Still a front runner.

Ruth: Upped her game & clearly enjoyed the dance despite fluffing up an underarm turn, she recovered it. Besides, Anton’s shirt distracted from any mistakes. If she’s in the DO she could go out on a personal high.

Gemma: My dark horse of SCD17. She quietly gets on with climbing the Leader Board each week & in this she mesmerised me. The front runners have competition from this pair. In my Final Four.

Joe: Not a perfect 10 for me but that was still impressive. Another one to watch.

Alexandra: The sexiest couple of the show scorched it, but somehow landed in the bottom half of the Leader Board. The judges are being harsh on her now but I have no doubt she’s still the one to beat.

Jonnie: Despite a few mis-steps he’s doing well under Oti’s tutelage. He did well to close the show in a bouncy Quick Step.

Debbies legs were too straight in the rumba for my liking. I find her legs can be too rigid and do not show personality if you know what I mean. I thibk because if her training she struggles to tell her legs to do anything other than be straight.

"I just watched on catch up. Love Joe, I had a poster of him on my wall back in the day lol. So many of the girls get sick on the spinny dances. I love spinning around I could do it for hours.

I love a good twirl too "

Me too, I love to spin, ballroom and latin tonight

I still think Alexandra, at the moment. The thing is, Alexandra and Aston have been good from the start and there are those that are improving week on week and could find themselves overtaking these two, so...who knows

Yes I just begun the Monday class and lovevit. So far we have worked on slow foxtrot and cha cha cha. Last week we began learning tge quickstep and loved the feel of the sway. I do salsa classes and have done midern jive (Cetoc) for many years. I love it.

Ah, well done you! I started dancing at 18 and went on to run dancing classes with my Dad for 20 years. Done a few competitions too. I do miss doing it now.

Alexandra & Aston are probably favourites to see the two ex X-Factor contestants duke it out for top spot. That said, my Dark Horses are Gemma, Joe & yes... Susan. If the public are genuinely backing the underdogs that could be a very good final three. None with prior dance experience but I’d say those are the ones on “a journey” this year.

It’ll probably still be Alex, Aston & Debbie for the finale but you can never tell how the general public will vote in anything recently.

Agree with you and it is down to the public, so anything can happen!
