He reminded me of a " court jester " articulating truths unspoken, shocking us out of our mediocrity and acquiescence..
Yeah..I admired his laissez faire and yep, had me laughing..in horror sometimes.. |

It's all a bit James Dean for me. The legend is greater than the reality.
I loved Hicks. I have his biography. I watched a documentary on him and he didn't come across as someone you'd like to be with for long.
His later appearances were becoming more polished.
Had he been alive now I dare say we wouldn't speak of him.

Prolly some truth in there..
I knew someone like Hicks....it was very demanding, the aggression especially...
I prefered Richard Prior fer belly laughs.. |

I kind of agree with Granny on this, if Hicks was still alive he would probably have slipped into the background as there are far better comedians about...and were even when Hicks was alive.
There is a lot of 'bigging up' when people die.

Yeah but he did influence our current crop a lot. Most UK comedians cite him as an influence. I guess we'll never know. |

I think Bill Hicks has a touch of the 'Eva Cassidy' effect....no-one brought her records when she was alive, she wrote very little of her own material and recorded mainly covers...even they weren't in demand until Wogan touched on her sad story and played 'Somewhere over the rainbow' non stop on his radio show.
What a fickle lot we are.... |

I'm not a fan of American stand up. The short, unrelated quick fired one line quips doesn't fit my comedy receptors.
I like some of Rich Hall's stuff, but only because he's got some British influence in there.
Bill Hicks isn't someone I would watch. |

Agree, see it subtley and sometimes very obviously in various others who try to have that style of delivery.
He was brilliant, an american not affraid to make fun of his fellow american, that was refreshing.

Bill Hicks is a legend and some call me the British version lol
To be honest I never thought anyone on here could appreciate his dark ironic humour so It's a very pleasant surprise. If anyone is interested in another Mitch Hedberg is another American comedian that was destined for greatness, but he was so troubled by mental demons that he took his own life (drug overdose)

no subject was taboo for bill hicks.
his sketches on smoking, and cancer were hilarious.
even when he knew he had cancer, and only had a short time to live.
he may not have been pc,but he was fantastically funny. |

what a lot of people overlook about Hicks was his technique as a stand-up.
forget his material for a moment, and he still stands out as arguably the greatest exponent of the art of stand-up comedy that ever stood in front of a brick wall.
He could have told knock knock jokes for all it matters and would still have left his mark in the comedy hall of fame.
His timing his delivery, his demenour, his courage, his improvisation, were all unsurpassed - only a very select few (Allen, Prior, Carlin, Bruce) ever came close but were all eventually eclipsed by his talent for the genre.
He was and still is the stand-up's stand-up |

"Carlin ?
Bruce ?
George Carlin and Lenny Bruce. Both extremely controversial comedians who are unfortunately dead now."
I just googled them both. Stared at their pics........read a basic bio ... I still don't know them. |

They were much more famous in the US than here, whereas Bill Hicks would have been more famous over here cos the UK audience loved him. |
